Term 1 week ending 15th March 2019 Humility One of my favourite words is ‘humility’, being humble, to have a modest view of oneself. I think that this can be one of the hardest things to learn in our lifetime. To be humble, but proud of our achievements without being boastful, is a real balancing act. This very important skill is hard for many adults to learn, let alone our children. As a parent and a teacher, this is one word I feel very strongly about teaching children the meaning of. Some quotes that I often remind myself of when thinking of humility are: “It is not thinking less of yourself, but thinking of yourself less” from CS Lewis “True humility is being able to accept criticisms as graciously as we accept compliments.” from Sabrina Newby “The humble man makes room for progress; the proud man believes he is already there” Ed Parker Being humble / showing humility certainly links with having a growth mindset. The belief that we can grow and do better and that we can set goals and work hard to achieve them is what we aim to instil in our learners here at LLS. Most importantly, when considering anything in my life, I turn to God’s Word. The Bible has so many quotes about humility. Here a few of my favourites: “But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.”” James 4:6 “Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.” James 4:10 “Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.” Ephesians 4:2 Jesus is the greatest example of humility. Never did he boast his greatness. In actual fact he washed the dirty feet of others. Every action Christ made in his lifetime demonstrated humility, compassion and care for others. He is the most selfless person and one I will always aspire to be like. Humility

One of my favourite words is ‘humility’, being humble, to have a modest view of oneself. I think that this

can be one of the hardest things to learn in our lifetime. To be humble, but proud of our achievements

without being boastful, is a real balancing act. This very important skill is hard for many adults to learn, let

alone our children. As a parent and a teacher, this is one word I feel very strongly about teaching children

the meaning of. Some quotes that I often remind myself of when thinking of humility are:

“It is not thinking less of yourself, but thinking of yourself less” from CS Lewis

“True humility is being able to accept criticisms as graciously as we accept compliments.” from Sabrina

Newby

“The humble man makes room for progress; the proud man believes he is already there” Ed Parker

Being humble / showing humility certainly links with having a growth mindset. The belief that we can grow

and do better and that we can set goals and work hard to achieve them is what we aim to instil in our

learners here at LLS.

Most importantly, when considering anything in my life, I turn to God’s Word. The Bible has so many quotes

about humility. Here a few of my favourites:

“But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: “God opposes the proud

but shows favor to the humble.”” James 4:6

“Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.” James 4:10

“Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.”

Ephesians 4:2

Jesus is the greatest example of humility. Never did he boast his greatness. In actual fact he washed the

dirty feet of others. Every action Christ made in his lifetime demonstrated humility, compassion and care for

others. He is the most selfless person and one I will always aspire to be like.

Welcome to Term 1 Week 7

I can’t believe we only have 5 weeks of Term 1 left before our next block of school holidays. The weeks are

certainly passing by very quickly. Last week we celebrated Shrove Tuesday with our students by having pancakes

for recess. Shrove Tuesday is the day before Lent which begins on Ash Wednesday. The other name for this day is

Pancake Day, which comes from the old English custom of using up all the fattening ingredients in the house

before Lent, so that people were ready to fast during this period. To mark the first day of Lent or better known as

“Ash Wednesday” Pastor Joe and Nicky visited our entire school community marking the sign of the cross with

ashes on foreheads. The exact date that Lent falls each year changes. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, which is

always held 46 days (40 fasting days and 6 Sundays) before Easter Sunday. This is to reference the time Jesus

spent being tempted in the desert. The use of ashes in the Old Testament symbolised mourning, repentance and

the fragility of humanity.

By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for

dust you are and to dust you will return.” Genesis 3:19 (NIV)

Student Led Conferences/Interviews

In Week 10 we are very pleased to be running Student Led Conferences. The learning conferences provide a time

where students can clearly describe their goals and achievements from Term 1 and discuss, with their teachers

and parents, their goals for Term 2.

Advantages of Student Led Conferences include:

Greater accountability by students for their own learning

Increased pride and achievement among students

Increased confidence by students

Increased learning independence by students

More positive student teacher relationships

Increased parental participation

Increased communication with parents resulting in deeper understanding and confidence in what happens

at school.

Each year level and class, will structure the conferences according to the needs and developmental level of the

students. Each family would be in the classroom for 15-20 minutes and during this time each student will have the

opportunity to fully discuss their learning. Student Led Conferences are an important and valuable part of the rich

learning that occurs at LLS. As per the Acquaintance Meetings held earlier in the term, please book a suitable time

to see your child’s teacher via www.schoolinterviews.com.au and use the passcode ks3j2. If you have any issues

using the online booking system, please don’t hesitate to contact the front office on 83896131.

providing all families needing before and after school care a free shuttle to and from Lobethal Primary School. This

will enable all families to access this service. Please see Tessa or Katrina for more information.

Driveway into school

Just a reminder that the driveway into the school off of Main Street is only meant for incoming traffic between

8:00am and 5:00pm. We have had a number of parents reporting to us that cars are using the driveway to

re-enter back onto Main Street, during these times. The sign outlining the times is quite discrete and may have

been missed by some. There is an exit located at the back of the school that can accommodate both incoming and

outgoing traffic. Thanking you in advance.

complimentary lesson to any LLS student who wants to give it a try. He has an absolute passion for all things

guitar and would love to share his skills and knowledge with others. If your child has a try and decides they love

it, Clinton’s lessons run for 45 minutes and cost $20.00. He is available during school time and lessons can be

done on school grounds. If you would like more information, please contact Clinton on 0408 025 811.

Self-regulation project well underway! The project has already passed the halfway point and we can’t believe how

fast the time is going! During the first four weeks we learnt all we could from staff, students and parents about

the challenges at LLS and what could be done to further supports students to self-regulate to be ready for

learning. We have now developed a plan with representatives of each stakeholder group (staff, parents, students)

and will now be putting this plan into action! Keep an eye and ear out over the next few weeks as we trial some

new and exciting strategies. Be sure to check the next newsletter for an update on how the project is going!
