Principal’s Report It’s so good to work in a clean Kelso High Campus At the start of the year, the students were challenged to keep our environment clean by looking after the playground – and they have done that brilliantly. The place looks as good as it ever has – keep up the good work everyone!

Part of the reason for this is the introduction of our Return and Earn program, which was launched earlier this term by our Year 12 Leadership team, with lots of support from Ms Murphy and Ms McFarland. We have a number of new yellow recycling bins for bottles, so we can a) earn funds to buy things for the campus environment and b) keep the place looking great. This is a wonderful initiative and is helping to keep the playground looking fantastic

Parent Focus group Our next parent focus group meeting is on Tuesday 9 April. I would encourage new or existing parents to come along. At this meeting we discuss key priorities of the campus and the college as well as any concerns that parents may have. We also have a “wish list” for parents.

The Parent Focus group has a very important role and their input is highly valued. In 2018, this team achieved:

- Purchase of 100 lockers to be installed in the upcoming holidays

- Re-establishment of the Environment team to respond to a call for improvements to the campus

grounds, including wet weather areas and landscaping

- Communications: Calendar section added to the newsletter and the introduction of a school app

At this upcoming meeting we will discuss our evaluation of the school plan, talk about staffing changes, progress on the above mentioned 2018 priorities, an update on the budget and how we are planning to spend school funds. Hans Stroeve will also provide a list of potential Decade Award recipients for consideration.

Covered bus shelter I met with Council last week to discuss the construction of a shelter in the bus bay. Construction will start day 1 of the holidays and, weather permitting, will be in place for day 1, Term 2. The shelter will look very much like the covered walkway that was built during the holidays and will extend from the gate, for approximately 90 metres, covering most of the bus bay. I would like to thank the Bathurst Regional Council and local member Mr Paul Toole MP for making this shelter possible.

Drop-off and Pick Up We have also been working with Council to improve the pick up and drop off arrangements for parents and families. Through this discussion I learned that it is perfectly legal for students to be picked up and dropped off in a no-parking zone, provided the driver only stays in that place for 2 minutes. Information about the drop off and pick up zones is included in this newsletter.

Top performances:

Our “all day every day” award winners who have a made a great start to the year.

Our Agriculture Show team, with special mention to Michaela Sullivan placing First in the 16 - 18

division and Emily Watterson placing First in the 18 - 25 division and being awarded Reserve

Champion for the overall Paraders Section.

Western girls’ volleyball players Maddie Vallis, Hariet Fitzsimmons, Lily Grimmond, Maddie Sufong

and Tamara Bray who were recently crowned state champions.

Open Boys Soccer who defeated Canowindra High 6-0.

Japanese students who have connected with Seiritsu School and Toyo High School in recent weeks and who have been fantastic ambassadors

Please give me a call or drop by to discuss anything concerning your child and Denison College, Kelso High Campus Mick Sloan, Principal.

Seiritsu School visit at KHC

On Monday 19th March twenty students from Seiritsu School in Japan spent the day with our Year 9 Japanese class. They visited the Agriculture farm, did some Aboriginal dot painting with the ARC students and attended class with their buddies.

In the afternoon, the students went ten pin bowling and learned how to play handball. It was a great day.

Our visitors went on a walking tour of the CBD in Bathurst and visited 2BS radio station and experienced the traditional Australian BBQ.

On Friday afternoon, we were very sad to say goodbye to our new friends from Seiritsu School in Japan. Kelso High students enjoyed the time they spent with their buddies in classes, teaching them about typical Australian foods and how to play go fish, and participating in a robotics lesson.

Our students also learned a lot about Japanese culture, including how to make origami cranes.

AFL Schools Cup – 20 March

Four Denison College teams played in the 7-10 AFL Schools Cup competition at Learmonth Park last week. The 7/8 girls played well, defeating Cowra High. And going down against Mackillop. Best Kelso players were Samantha Hanrahan. Jemmia Luck and Faith Ryder

The 7/8 boys played well in patches but couldn’t quite match it with James Sheahan and Cowra High. Volkan Gunduz, Oscar Archer, Will Sloan and Jai-Jai Lucas were amongst the best Kelso players.

The 9/10 girls did not concede a point in their 2 games against Cowra and James Sheahan, with a combined score of 73-0. Lillee Bullock was fantastic down back and Rhiani Rozga was dominant up forward. Charlie-May Fox and Shanese Lane-Bergen were also strong players. The two wins means the girls will play in the regional final at Blacktown in May.

The 9/10 boys also won through to their regional final after coming from behind to beat Cowra in their last game of the day. Zac Yandle was one of the best players of the day, and he was well supported by Reece Belmonte and Bailey Ronan.

Chloe Stapleton

Kelso High Year 8 student Chloe Stapleton attended the CHS Girls State Carnival for cricket representing Western at Raby, Sydney South West.

The players were fantastic ambassadors for their schools and region with very positive feedback from other coaches and umpires. Although the team only had one win, they showed determination to improve their skills and worked well as a team.

The girls had a tough draw playing most of the top teams, but held their own but often fell short in runs.

As a left hand bowler, Chloe troubled some batters and was economical in her bowling. Best figures were against North Coast 2-0. With the bat she added 20 valuable runs on the last day against Riverina when Western were struggling to get runs on the board.
