The National Young Leaders Day quickly expanded into primary and secondary student events and became an annual event in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide. Halogen Australia exists to inspire and influence a generation of young people to lead themselves and others also. Guest’s speakers are invited to the event to share their own leadership experiences with young Australians.

Year 6 Leadership Camp

The Leadership Camp scheduled for Week 3 was cancelled due to the floods. Leigha, Joel and Sam will now be going on the 12th and 13th of March.

Over the two days, students from public schools across the Hawkesbury will participate in a variety of activities to help them develop effective leadership skills to undertake their leadership duties to the best of their abilities. Activities included; public speaking, leadership skills, team initiatives and a number of physical challenges. By attending camp, our leaders will be able to meet leaders from other schools, share their experiences and develop friendships for the future. We know they will have a valuable experience and enjoy their two days.

PSSA Participation Note Years 1 – 6

This year Hawkesbury PSSA have requested that parents of children from Year 1 to Year 6 complete a participation note covering code of conduct and permission to publish documents for all students participating in their sports events. They have indicated this will cover them for their entire school life, so it will also cover younger students who will be participating in PSSA events in the future. A note has been sent home today to be filled out and returned to the office by Friday 6th March.

Technology News Our students have created some amazing inventions using the stem T4L PC Robotics Kit. After reading the book 'Rosie's Walk', K/1/2 created a map using the coding textas for the Ozobot to travel along. Last Thursday they also made a mouse wheel for their Ozobot to play with.

Years 3/4 and 5/6 have had the opportunity to program the Microbits which are tiny computers with 25 red LED lights that can flash messages and be used to create games. Keira and Leigha even made a sign which read 'We love the RFS' Zakath and William also made a Scissors, Paper, Rock game which you could play by shaking the Microbit. 3/4 and 5/6 also used the Makey Makey kits which are an electronic invention tool that allows users to connect everyday objects to computer programs. In Week 3 the students created a piano with playable keys using Play Doh. They then created a Pacman controller out of Play Doh and played a game on the computer with it. How cool? Last Thursday Mr Watson, the Stem Community Leader for our area, came and taught the 5/6 students about driverless cars. After viewing a video of the latest self driving Tesla, the students then designed and made a Riley Rover vehicle using the Mindstorms Lego EV3 kits (complete with 2 motors and a sensor). The students' designs were super creative and some of them could even code their vehicles to drive along a road made of masking tape on the carpet. Thanks to Mr Watson for visiting our school again and for showing us what is possible with these incredible kits.

CLASS NEWS

CLASS K/1/2 - Mrs McCloy & Ms Wheen

K/1/2 have had a wonderful start to the term and are transitioning into our class routines. This week’s News topic is ‘My favourite book’ and our learning intention is to maintain eye contact with our audience. News has been entertaining and we have heard about everyone’s favourite toy and information about our students’ families. Thank you to those children who have provided drawings and photos of their families to display in the classroom. Mrs McCloy would like a recent photo of each child’s family as part of her History Unit – ‘Daily Lives Past and Present’. A scan or copy of an original photo would be appreciated.

K/1/2 have been busting out some funky moves in Dance2Bfit for Sport. They have already learnt 2 dances with Carissa.

We are crazy about subitising in K/1/2. Subitising is the ability to recognise a number pattern instantly without having to count by ones. We have been singing songs about subitising and playing lots of dice and domino games to brush up on our skills.

Last week we started Literacy Groups. The Kindies are trying very hard to work independently while Ms Wheen reads with small groups at the rainbow table. The Year 1/2’s have been fabulous helpers and we’ve had some of the Year 6 buddies assist too. You’ve got to love Bilpin School!

Our Visible Learning Disposition for the first half of this term is ‘Resilience’. In K/1/2 we have been talking about building resilience because it applies to every aspect of our lives. Making mistakes is part of learning. We are practicing how to say ‘Oh well’ and then having another try.
