Message from the Principal

Dear Parents and Community,

I would like to welcome back all of our students, staff and our parent community to the 2019 school year, and extend a very warm welcome to all of our new students and their families. I look forward to working together achieving the educational goals of our students. Our Year 7 students have had a great start to the school year, settling in well with their peers and with their teachers to embark on their educational journey through high school.

We have wonderful opportunities for our students to involve themselves in academic, cultural, leadership and sporting pursuits. As a learning community we will continue to support our students and our staff to provide a positive learning environment focusing on improvement. We ask your support to ensure that your children are focused on their school work including completing assessment tasks, doing homework or regular revision and preparing for examinations.

It has been pleasing to see the majority of students in correct uniform each day and I congratulate these students for demonstrating respect for our school. I do understand that on occasion students are unable to be in full uniform, and I ask that you write your child a note. They will then see me before school to be issued with a pass. A reminder that black shorts are only to be worn on Wednesdays. Students who have PASS or PE are to bring their uniform in their bag and get changed. If you are having difficulty in purchasing uniform, please contact the school for assistance. I thank you for your continued support.

Our School Expo is on again on March 13 from 4:30pm. Please save the date and come along to see the great work happening in our school.

I am looking forward to working together to make 2019 a great year!

S Students online with Microsoft One NoteWednesday 13 February - Mrs James’ Year 10 class jumped into Microsoft Office 365. Most were using this for the first time and I don’t think they were aware that as part of their department login they can access the full range of Apps that Microsoft Office has to offer. These are accessed online so can be used at school on computers, laptops and chromebooks. They can also be accessed on tablets and even on smartphones!

Students logged into their portal and found the Office 365 link. They opened up a shared notebook called Class Notebook and used the collaboration section to add text. Some students added emoijis and some wrote on directly onto the Chromebook screen to enter text that way. There were resources available, a short quiz to complete and they could contribute a link or image to the collaboration section.

Can anyone access Microsoft Office 365 apps? Yes. You just need your DET login and password - go to the library if you have forgotten your password and need to reset it.

Please find below some screenshots and steps to access Microsoft Office 365 - this can be done with any device that is connected to the internet.

Step 1: Login to the student portal

Step 2: Scroll down until you see the “Learning” box

Step 3: Click more

Step 4: Click “Microsoft Office 365”

You have access to online

storage in One Drive and all of

the apps of Office 365.

M A T H E M A T I C SFACULTY

The Mathematics Faculty has welcomed many new faces this year and with the implementation of new programs for years 7, 9 and 11, students and teachers are busy with their first topics for 2019. Many activities that will be found in these programs will involve students partaking in investigation style tasks as well as hands on learning experiences that will enable them to build upon their prior knowledge by relating content to experiences.

We also have some great news coming from the 2018 Year 12 ICAS results. Both Mickayla Ennis and Gabriel Farr achieved ‘Credits’, with their scores ranking them in the top 14% and 16% of all candidates respectively. Sam Schmidt achieved exceptionally well with a ‘Distinction’, which placed him in the top 8% of all year 12 students that completed the assessment last year. The ICAS Mathematics assessment, organised through the University of New South Wales, requires students to apply their learning in new contexts, using higher-order thinking and problem-solving skills.

We are happy to announce that free tutoring will be held in C1 again this year. It will be held each Tuesday afternoon from 3:30pm in weeks 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 8 and 10 of each term. For more information, please contact Mr Mills in the Mathematics staffroom.

The past century or so has seen a massive development in our understanding of our universe. With Einstein’s

General Theory of Relativity came the notion of massive objects curving the fabric of spacetime, and indeed the

notion of spacetime itself - that space and time are not two separate entities but one inseparable construct. It

predicted black holes and explained hitherto unexplained astrophysical phenomena with stunning accuracy.

Hubble discovered that the galaxies outside our own are moving away from us, which was inferred by Lemaitre

to arise from the expansion of the universe. Rewinding this expansion led to the primordial singularity and the

notion of the Big Bang, the birth of our universe from this singularity some 13.7 billion years ago. In recent times,

it has been determined that this expansion is in fact speeding up, due to the mysterious substance we now call

“Dark Energy”. This section looks briefly into the ideas that originated from Einstein’s General Relativity, and the

picture of our universe that we have constructed since its development.

The year 8 Tasters class built robots using Mindstorms EV3 Lego kits. They wrote a program to make the robot perform tricks, and then they

altered the program to fix a bug.

All participants worked exceptionally well, proving themselves to be fantastic beginner robot builders.

This class will continue with the program’s challenges until the grand finale in week 8 where they will use their robots to compete against

other schools.

S The HSIE faculty are ready for another great year with a variety of activities already being organised. Year 11 Marine Studies are diving straight in with their first scuba diving course in just a couple of weeks. The commitment and passion of Ms Collits, Mr Werner and Mr Hill to ensure students have a safe and fun time is greatly appreciated. For some students, this activity may be the start of their future careers in the marine sector.

We are also planning our display and activities for the Macksville High School Expo on Wednesday 13 March. There will be Gumbaynggirr language classes, displays of historical artifacts and mapping quizzes. Staff will be available to answer questions about any of our courses which include, for senior students, Ancient and Modern History, Business and Legal Studies plus Marine Studies. Prizes will be available for visitors who complete the HSIE Passport task on the day.

Welcome to Year 7. All students in Year 7 are currently studying History in their HSIE classes. The focus for the learning is an Introduction to History and Archaeology followed by a study of Ancient societies which may include Ancient Egypt or Greece and Ancient India or Early Imperial China. In Semester 2, Year 7 students will commence their study of Geography. The same pattern of study is completed in Year 8.

The Year 9 and 10 Show Me The Money class will soon be registering for the ASX Sharemarket Game as part of their study into Personal Finance. Each student will be given

a virtual $50,000 to “invest” in the Australian Stock Exchange between 7 March and 15 May. Stay posted to see if we have any budding millionaires within the group.

Stage 4 Technology classes have a new syllabus this year, which means that they are being presented with new opportunities across Technology Mandatory. Year 7 has an Agri-food, Engineering and Coding focus whilst Year 8 will be investigating methods of cookery, C02 Racers and working with mixed materials (metal and timber) to create a range of design solutions.

Food Technology classes have launched into 2019, whilst having refreshed their knowledge of health, safety and hygiene they have commenced food preparation. The Year 7 students have made some delicious banana pancakes, whilst the Year 8 students successfully produced cheesy jacket potatoes. There is an emphasis on where our food comes from.

The Year 8 metal work class are also actively producing their first design project.

Teachers for 2019 Technology Mandatory are Mr Robby Ally, Mrs Larissa Atkins, Mr Peter Joyce, Mr Greg Hill, Mrs Elizabeth O’Sullivan and Mr David Sheridan.

On Monday 4 February, Macksville High School made its way to the Macksville Memorial Aquatic Centre. With our new house captains for the year in control, the grandstand filled with students in their house groups. Swimmers were getting ready for the races while the student spectators found a comfortable seat to take up and start cheering.

The races were competitive and fun with all the regular stroke events. Many students took the opportunity to test their skills in the event races and those that just wanted to cool down were able to get wet in the ever-popular novelty events.

The final house points have been tailed, placings are...

M Year 9 were given the opportunity to participate in experiential activities in eight industry areas over three consecutive days. All activities were organised by TAFE NSW.

The eight Industry Areas were:

Manufacturing

Health Construction

Information Technology (IT) Automotive

Tourism, Hospitality and Retail

Science Technology

Engineering, Maths (STEM), Agrifoods

Each industry area had hands on activities where the students were assisted with developing their skills and knowledge. It was a chance for them to talk about future work directions, skills they needed to work in that particular industry and their aspirations.
