Term 1 Week 11 NAROOMA PUBLIC SCHOOL 10th April, 2018
Our School is leading the Way
Today, we hosted representatives from Yenda Public
School, a school in the Riverina, showing them some
of our wonderful programs and structures that have
been recognised for improving our results and data.
Programs on display were Synthetic Phonics, Words
Their Way, CARS & STARS and Maths Frenzy.
It is fantastic that Narooma Public School is
recognised in the wider educational community for
our achievements!
District Soccer & Rugby League Trials
Last week, our school sent representatives to the
Boys Soccer, Girls Soccer, U11’s Rugby League or
Opens Rugby League trials.
These trials saw children from the Eurobodalla
District competing for a position on the team
involved in the South Coast Regional championships
next term in their chosen sport.
We are proud to announce the following children
have been selected into these teams:
Girls Soccer – Halle Constable.
U11’s Rugby League – Daniel Betts, Sam Patmore,
Rueben Booth, Luke Barry and Drew Arentz.
Opens Rugby League – Max Bourke, Talon De
Heaume, Jorge Constable, Blake Salway and Jackson
Rapley.
Congratulations once again to all who were selected.
State Swimming Carnival
Good luck to all the swimmers who will be
representing the school on Wednesday April 11 and
Thursday April 12 at the NSW State Swimming
Championships in Sydney.
We look forward to hearing the results of your efforts
in upcoming newsletters.
School ANZAC DAY Ceremony
This Friday at 10:10am in our hall our school will be
holding an ANZAC Day ceremony.
I would like to invite any parents and friends of the
school to come along to this ceremony to help our
school remember the sacrifice that the service men
and women gave to their country.
We hope to see you there.
ANZAC Day at Club Narooma
During the holiday break, ANZAC Day celebrations
will take play on April 25 at Club Narooma.
Children wishing to represent the school can march
behind our school banner as per previous years. They
will be led by our School Captains and members of
the SRC. We will meet at the Visitors Centre to
assemble before the March at 10:40am
Our school choir will also be performing at the
ceremony. It would be wonderful to see as many
children as possible on this significant occasion
representing the school.
Voluntary Contributions
The school would like to thank the families that have
paid their contributions as this money is vital for our
programs.
Money collected via the contributions is used to
purchase resources for teaching and learning
activities within the school. Some of the resources
purchased are art paper, paints, pencils, exercise
books, consumables for our science program etc.
Our school has currently received less contributions
this year compared to last year. I am hoping that
many families may have simply forgotten to forward
their contributions to the school.
Payments can be made online via our website or can
be dropped into the office area at your convenience.
I thank the community for your anticipated co-
operation with this matter.

Congratulations 2018 Ministers
Congratulations to the ministers for the 2018 Narooma Public School Parliament, who have been elected by the Year 6 students. The NPS Parliament will open in early-Term 2, with introductory speeches by all the ministers outlining their roles. Parliament will then meet every 4 weeks to discuss Bills put forward by NPS students.
How does our Parliament work? To suggest a Bill to Parliament students should first see their class representative (SRC). They and their representative can then take their Bill to the correct Minister (e.g. for a Bill about an Art competition see the Creative Arts Minister). The Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister will be responsible for deciding which Bills will be debated. All students in Years 3-6 will have voting rights in the School Parliament once Bills have been discussed. Successful Bills will be passed to the Governor-General, Mr Paul Sweeney, for approval.
Why have we introduced a school parliament? To increase student leadership opportunities To empower students to make genuine decisions on positive change within the school To introduce students to models of democracy and citizenship To support development of speaking, listening, and debating skills.

Congratulations to our Whale Tail Draw recipients this week: Summer White, Mac Lavis and Logan Allison.
These students are acknowledged for being safe, respectful and responsible in the playground. They receive a Citizenship Award.
Our focus this week is making sure all litter goes into a bin. We want our playground looking smart and our rubbish to stay out of the ocean.
Transport Volunteers As per New South Wales Department of Education Policy, all parents, carers or volunteers assisting in providing transport of students, must complete an Appendix 5 - Working with Children Check: Declaration for Volunteers Form, which is available at the school office.
Parents/Carers are also required to show their current driver’s license and registration to the office prior to the excursion. A reminder of this requirement will be placed on permission notes.
Stay Sun Safe at School
To keep children safe we require that they wear a navy blue bucket hat for outdoor activities.
Please provide your child with a navy blue bucket hat to wear to school. $10 school hats can be purchased from the P&C Uniform Shop and the front office, but plain, navy blue hats without logos can also be worn.
We recommend that your child’s hat is clearly labelled and that it is kept in school.

Takeisha Mason Campbell, Ella Moore, Dominica Naumoski, Noah Thomas, Joey Naumoski, Antwon Harrison, Jared Hoskins-Moore, Mariah Rotumah and Malayah Gibson attended a three day workshop

Kookaburra News Term 1
History We have been studying the journey of the First Fleet from England to Australia from 1787-1788. We have been reading accounts from journals and letters of the convicts and officers on board various ships. We recently had a visit from author Susan Boyer who wrote one of the texts we are reading, Stories of Life at Sydney Cove. This was a wonderful opportunity to listen to
how information is sourced from historical events and ask questions about the process of writing texts.
We have drawn and painted some tall ships on the seas. They are on display in the classroom and in the foyer of the Office.
English
We are learning to write persuasive texts. We will be attempting to write strong arguments about our opinions on several given topics. There are lots of things to consider like the structure, factual input, and modality – choice of words used to persuade the reader. We are using an analogy of a boxer when creating our sequence of arguments. I ‘jab’ to alert the reader and make them take notice, an ‘uppercut’ delivers our second point and a final ‘knockout blow’ convinces the reader our point of view is correct. We should be experts by mid Term 2.
We are building up our ability to maintain focus and read for longer periods of time. Our aim is to read undistracted for 30 minutes. We have begun to develop our comprehension of texts using comprehension cards – short passages we read then answer questions on. We are also practicing our editing skills by correcting grammar, spelling and punctuation in incorrect passages.
Maths For the last few weeks of this term we are learning about fractions, data and chance. We always try to practice our skills in games based or hands on activities before demonstrating our competence in various assessments. Some photos have been included showing us engaged in Maths games and activities.
Assembly Kookaburras will be hosting the Primary Assembly on Thursday of this week. It begins at 2.00pm in the hall. All families are welcome to come and watch.
