Communication with Teachers
We all live in a busy changing world. At times we are busy but need to be in contact with school staff. If
you are wanting to contact a staff member we recommend the following communication methods.
Low level issues or concerns e.g. not coming in for reading groups, student away, message re
homework etc Call the office or email the message to [email protected] – attention to
the staff member.
Moderate Issues – requiring attention within the next few days. Call the office for an appointment or
email the concern attention to the staff member [email protected] . Please be aware
that during school hours staff are not always on emails as they are engaged with teaching and learning
activities. Staff will attend to emails after hours and will respond within a 24-48hour period. Parents are
welcome to come into the office if they require a teacher of a morning. If available the teacher will come
to speak to the parent. For longer matters an appointment time will be set.
High Level of Concern – requiring urgent attention. Please call or come into the office before school.
Office staff will find the staff member or an executive to assist you.
All staff are involved in meetings on Tuesday mornings and Wednesday afternoons. Staff also engaged
in professional development courses after school throughout the year.
Please remember to update your contact numbers with the office if these change so we can readily
access parents and emergency contacts.
Crunch and Sip Program
During class time students can refuel on fruit and vegetables and rehydrate on water. This assists
students with physical and mental performance, and concentration in the classroom.
Crunch & Sip encourages fruit and vegetable snacking and drinking water. Healthy eating behaviours
are modelled in the classroom and reinforce the nutrition messages in the PD/H/PE curriculum. By
making fruit and vegetable eating and water drinking normal in the classroom, healthy habits can be
formed and continued into adolescence and adulthood.
The Crunch & Sip gives students the opportunity to eat the piece of fruit that might otherwise be left in
their lunchbox. Students are also more likely to eat their fruit or vegetables and drink their water if their
friends and peers are all doing it too!
Children are asked to bring a piece of fruit or vegetables and small bottle of water. Younger children will
need to have the fruit cut into small pieces. Any food bought for this purpose needs to be easily
consumed within a few minutes. Crunch & Sip occurs at the teacher’s discretion to fit around lessons.

Attendance and absences
Parents of children from Kindergarten to Year 12 must ensure their children attend school every day. On
occasion, your child may need to be absent from school. Justified reasons for student absences may
include:
being sick or having an infectious disease
having an unavoidable medical appointment
being required to attend a recognised religious holiday
exceptional or urgent family circumstances e.g. attending a funeral
Parents must provide an explanation for absences to the school within 7 days from the first day of any
period of absence. Where an explanation has not been received within the 7-day timeframe, the school
will record the absence as unjustified on the student’s record. Please place all absent notes in the note
box at the office or contact the office by phone or email.
If you are late dropping your child to school or need to collect them early, you must report to the office to
require a late note or early leavers pass.
For more information please refer to the ‘Compulsory School Attendance – information for parents’ sheet
attached or can be found at the front office.

rehearsal. Junior Band should receive their instruments in time for their first tutorial.
Library
Students will begin library lessons Week 2. These lessons may not take place in the library due to the
flooding however, all students will still have the opportunity to borrow. Students should ensure that they
have a library bag ready so that they can borrow books each week. If over the holidays you have found
any library books or home readers, please return these books as soon as possible as students with
overdue books may not be allowed to borrow until these books are returned or payment is made for lost
books.

Ethics and Special Religious Education (Scripture) Classes
Special Religious Education and Ethics Classes will commence 26th February. Please contact the office
if you require any information regarding these classes. Forms are required to be completed if you wish
to change classes.
Birthdays
Student safety is important to us during all formal and informal activities at school. When it
is your child’s birthday we allow the student’s to come to school dressed in mufti if they
wish to – remembering they must have a pair of enclosed shoes on their feet e.g sneakers.
Parent’s may bring a small item to share with the class at lunch time – we recommend ice- blocks as
these cause less allergies to students currently at our school and they are easy to hand out. Please bring
them to school and place in the freezer in the hall clearly marked with the students name and class.
Food can only be shared with their sibling/s and own class. No items that contain NUTS can be shared
at school.
SRC – Student Nominations
Next week students will be asked to nominate themselves for class SRC. Students will be asked to tell
the class why they want to be a SRC representative. Classes vote for 1 boy and 1 girl representative.
Mobile Phones/ Devices/ Smart Watches
Students
Students are not permitted to have mobile phones/ devices or watches that receive messages, take
photos or access the internet on their person nor to use mobile phones/ devices/ Smart Watches during
school hours.
Several issues arise in regard to this matter.
Inappropriate use of mobile device e.g. nuisance calls or texting, bullying filming or photographing then uploading to the internet.
Inappropriate use of device during class time both for calls and use of games or cameras.
Sending or receiving a message
Security of device. As with other electronic games, etc, their security from theft or breakage can be an issue.
At Burnside Public School students may only bring mobile phones/devices/ SMART Watches to school if
there is a need for them to be able to contact their parents either before arriving at school or in the afternoon
after leaving school. Upon arrival at school the phone/ device/ SMART Watch is to be checked in at the
school office where it will be kept securely for the day. It is the child’s responsibility to collect the phone/
device/ SMART Watch at the end of the day.
Parents with an urgent need to be in contact with their child during the day should contact the
school office and appropriate steps will be taken to pass on the message or arrangements will be
made for the child to return the call on the school phone.

Director Educational Leadership Message
As you are aware, Mrs Bromwich was asked at the end of 2019 to relieve as Principal at Beresford Road
Public School. At the end of 2019, a merit selection process, involving written applications, interviews
and referee statements, took place to identify her replacement for Term One 2020.
Mrs Gill Bennett was successful in this process and will lead Burnside PS in Mrs Bromwich’s absence.
Mrs Bennett has strong curriculum and management skills and a good understanding of the context at
Burnside PS. I’m sure you will join me in welcoming Mrs Bennett to the position and offer her our support
as she leads Burnside Pubic School.

P & C INFORMATION
Happy New Year Burnside. I hope everyone has had a restful break over the school holidays.
In just over two weeks the Burnside P&C Association will be having its Annual General Meeting. Every
year in February all positions on the P&C are made vacant and a new team is elected. We all work hard
every year to help make Burnside Public the best school we can and this year a number of our long term
P&C members will be unable to continue in their roles on the P&C. We need your help to fill these roles
and continue to support our school as best we can.
If you have ever volunteered before you will know how satisfying the work can be and I find it especially
rewarding when I know that our children will directly benefit from our hard work. In the last five years the
school community has given the school over $100,000 via the P&C. This is a fantastic achievement and
is something that I am very proud to have been a part of.
If you would like any information about any of the roles on the P&C and how you can be involved please
don’t hesitate to get in touch via our email address at [email protected] or contact me
directly on the number below.
The roles to be filled at the AGM are: President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, Uniform Shop
Coordinator and Uniform Shop helpers, Fundraising Coordinator and Fundraising helpers, Social Media
Coordinator, and Band Coordinator. The out-going members are David Vassallo (Vice President),
Katherine Stewart (Secretary), Ivana Prevetera (Band Coordinator) and Melanie Kunjasich (Fundraising
Coordinator). I offer my heart-felt thanks to all of our members from last year for their efforts on the P&C
and especially to our out-going members who cannot return this year. Thank you all so much for your
generosity over the years. You have made a huge difference to our beloved little school.
I look forward to seeing you all at our AGM on 19th February at 7.30pm in the school staff room.
P&C Meetings
The P&C meeting is held on the third Wednesday of the month at 7:30pm in the staffroom. All welcome
