Learning Overview

Non Academic Learning - The most important part of the learning was the cross cultural experience and psychological aspects of the management.

Being student ambassador and the president of the Media club provided me the privilege to be close to the who’s who of China. I was truly enthralled to listen to political people from PRC and Shanghai government. In addition to this the top management sessions from Loreal, Ambev, Bosch, Bayer and many other top global firms was really remarkable. Just imagine putting a note for future strategy of the firms of the scale of Bosch and Ambev, how exciting it is.

Academic Learning –

Economics provided me the broader aspects of the business. Micro economics provided me the broad aspects of the business. This case was basically the what, why and how of things behind the business behavior in real life. Macroeconomics made me to read the financial times more deeply then I used to. Proving the comments of the politicians and the central banks wrong was the most interesting part of the classes. In addition to this the whole world appears to be a mini case study which can all be analyzed to a reasonably decent extent. All this was possible through the deep explanation of the recent phenomenon and the common misunderstandings by word renowned faculties such as Professor Xu and Professor Zhu, who had been named among the top 40 influential people in China by Business week.Decision Making Process and Statistics provided me the valuable framework needed to find out patterns in things which appear to be random at first. I would say the most valuable intake from the whole course was

1. How to find a problem2. How to define a problem3. What are the methods through which it can be solved4. How statistics can play a role to make my own solution more accurate

5. How to present the analysis and solutionThe course on statistics was all about finding a solution and then checking its accuracy.

Accounting was an eye opener to the world of finance and its intricacies. Now I find myself looking closely to the expert opinions on the quarterly results announced by the companies. In addition to this whenever I am online, I am resisting myself not to smell and look out for chances of frauds and misinterpretations in the opinions about the income statement and balance sheet of companies.

Extra Co curricular Activities –

Clubs

Being President of the Media Club, I got to learn about the Marketing and communication objectives of the school and the local firms for which CEIBS is collaborating a lot for marketing.

Being Vice president of the International Club made me to improve upon my party and events organization skills. The biggest part of the learning was the cross cultural environment where we celebrate cultural events from throughout the world such as Halloween, Mah Chang Night, BBQ,s etc.

Perhaps the biggest learning about China came out from my profile of being the Vice president of the China business Club. We organized meets from the renowned companies such as Accenture for their past experiences and future strategies in China. We learnt a lot about the supply Chain and logistics issues of the export import related business in China. We had deep discussions with the head of International Supply Chain from Huawei. He busted lot of myths due to the crowding out effects of the international media in China.

Simulations

Odyssey – This simulation was a 10 day event where every day was one quarter. We had to run an airline company with various inputs in the form of the cash, loans, materials, products and manpower. The inputs vary every quarter with the external macroeconomic factors announced every quarter.

Biz-Café – This simulation was simple management of big coffee shop. There were some key decisions to be made right from the startup of the café to the expansion and profit generation. Our team won the competition in our industry.

Workshops and Trainings

OB WorkshopThis workshop was held by a leading HR consultant in China. We had various activities related to analysis of our HA (Harrison Assessment) and CL (Career Leader). We had completed both the tests before starting of the workshop. The main emphasis of the workshop was on changing the mindset in Cross cultural teams. All the main components such as communication, behavior, personalities and culture bias were analyzed through activities such as

1. Scarce Resource Allocation2. Efforts threshold criterion ( I cant forget that as I earned 100 RMB out of it)3. HA/CL comparison4. Peer review through video and audio analysis

Acculturation TrainingChina is a unique country which is bit different in so many aspects due to its cultural and language barrier. I have heard from so many expats in various forums in Shanghai that unlike other countries where they were able to get around with their little knowledge of the language of the home country, it is difficult to even get around in China. Also, Chinese language and culture are deeply interlinked with each other. You can not learn one without learning the other. One can not learn language without learning culture and vice versa. The same was told to me by some professor in Chinese language in Delhi University before I went to China.

Hence, the Acculturation training is an ongoing series of session which cover both the cultural and language aspects. Its rea
