Our newsletter is printed and proudly sponsored by
Message from the Principal
Venkatesh, teacher of Biology, from Kelston Girls High School. Their appointments
fill vacancies that we have been advertising since Term 4 last year. I welcome also
Mrs Anne Elliot, an experienced Head of Faculty Art, formerly from Mahurangi
College who will fill the Art teacher vacancy until an appointment is made. I
acknowledge also Ms Tiere Maoate, who has been our relieving teacher of junior
English. Her experience in primary and secondary teaching has brought stability
and engagement to students in her classes.
Athletics Day was hugely successful in terms of student participation. For the first
time Dave & Lynda Scott, Athletics Day co-ordinators, had staff at all events recording
and co-ordinating data digitally. This was also the first opportunity for the new three
house system to challenge each other.
The Reo Rua European Trip 2018 fund raising evening in the form of a Variety
Concert was a sell-out. Those lucky enough to acquire tickets were treated to
outstanding performances by our Music and Performing Arts department students.
The Paihia Rotary Club, long time sponsors and supporters of Bay College were
welcomed guests along with a visiting fellow Rotarian from Kenya. The talent on
display was exceptional and the affirmation by our guests was rewarding.
On Friday 9 & Saturday 10 April, Bay College, hosted the renowned Australian guru
for Restorative Practices in schools, Mrs Margaret Thorsborne. In response to an
invitation sent to northland schools we were joined by staff from Upper North
Harbour College, Huanui College, Whangarei Girls High and Moerewa Primary
School. This professional development focused on building and maintaining positive
relationships between the student and teacher. It looked at how to heal the harm
when relationships have broken down.
On Monday 12 April, the senior Geography students left on their study trip to the
Rotorua region with their teacher Ms Esther Van Dyke and parent supporter. Apart
from the record cold mornings they experienced the reports back from the travelers
indicated that their mission was accomplished.
Many thanks to parents and caregivers who attended the (Parent, Student, Teacher,)
Academic Counselling day, held recently to discuss students progress. Follow up
meetings are being conducted with whanau who were unable to be present on the
day. Please make contact with your child’s Form Group Teacher to arrange an
appointment.
Our school took a teina and a tuakana kapa haka group to the Tai Tokerau Secondary
Schools Festival, hosted by Kerikeri High School. Both groups distinguished
themselves on stage making the many hours of practice and weekend wananga
totally worthwhile. The entire event was live streamed and is available on demand.
Whaea Jasmine Maunsell, acknowledged that our teina kapa haka was tutored
entirely by Year 13 senior students in the tuakana group.
Minister of Education Chris Hipkins has initiated a Review of Tomorrows Schools
which have been running now for thirty years. On the 12 & 13 May, an Education
Summit will be held in Auckland to conduct the review and to plan for the future. I
have been invited by Ministry of Education as one of the representatives of the Tai
Tokerau Region. The minister has also authorized a review of NCEA and a Principal
from each of the 11 educational regions of New Zealand has been invited by the
Minister to be a Regional NCEA Review Champion. One of their tasks will be to assist
with the consultation with all stakeholders in this national review. As the nominated
Principal Representative for Northland I will be working closely with this team.
Peowhairangi CoL – Bay College is part of a Community
of Learning, which is a cluster of learning institutions in
the Bay of Islands area made up of, Early Childhood
Education, Primary and Secondary. Our former Board
Chairperson and Principal of Karetu School, Mr Ken
Timperley has been appointed by the Ministry of
Education to be the Lead Principal for our CoL. More
information about the CoL will be coming your way in
the new term. May you have an enjoyable school
holiday with those special to you.
Take care of each other until we meet again in the new
term on Monday 30 April.
Noho ora mai koutou, i raro iho i te maru, o to tatou
kai-hanga.
He tawhiti ke atu to tatou haerenga, ki te kore
e haere tonu. He tino nui rawa o tatou mahi,
kia kore e mahi tonu. We have come too far
not to go further. We have done too much, not
to do more. Ta Hemi Henare
Sir James Henare’s famous words have
inspired generations who have faced
challenges in their lives. As our school term
comes to an end I acknowledge the
challenges staff have faced ensuring that our
students learning was not compromised by
the nation-wide teacher shortage and our
unfilled staffing vacancies.
The Lemon’s Hill road closure continues to be
a significant challenge financially and in
travel time, long after the storm that caused
the slip. I acknowledge that whanau have
made sacrifices in accompanying our student
representatives to the many sporting, culture
and academic pursuits throughout the school
term. Appreciation of parental and caregiver
support is felt deeply by staff and it is our
student’s success that makes every sacrifice
worthwhile.
On behalf of our school community I bid
farewell and say a thank you to two staff for
the contribution that they have made to our
school during their time with us. Our best
wishes go with Mrs Davina Duke the Head of
Faculty Art and Mrs Andrea Chase, Biology
teacher as they move onto other challenges in
their lives. Finally it is with relief and delight
that I welcome the appointment of Mr Richard
Higgins, teacher of English who comes to us
from Kerikeri High School and Mrs Annie

FOR LEARNING & SUCCESS
Last Thursday evening, 5th April 2018 parents/caregivers, staff and community members were treated to a
fantastic Variety Night Evening of superb entertainment from an amazingly talented group of our Bay College
students. Along with this great entertainment we were treated to a very tasty smorgasbord meal catered by
the Reo Rua Group fundraising for their overseas trip to Europe later in the year. A great night was had by
all. Congratulations to the Reo Rua Group and our Bay College talented students………... more photos inside
Swimming: In February, five students took part in the Northland Secondary School Swimming Carnival at Dargaville. They were Marvin Beckmann, Rheba Clark, Coco-Dee Clark-Napier, Essica Toia-Owen and Te Aranga Mai Mareikura-Edmonds. Congratulations to Marvin who went on to compete in two events at the NZSS Swimming Championships in March. Waka Ama The girls’ team that competed at the Northland Secondary School Waka Ama Regatta at Lake Manuwai had only been paddling together for two weeks prior to that event. They came away with awesome results, finishing 2nd in the J19 W6 250m and 3rd in the 500m finals. Congratulations also
to Antz Maddren who competed in his first regatta at the same event in the J19 W1 section. All seven paddlers then went on to Rotorua two weeks later to compete in the Nationals at Lake Tikitapu (The Blue Lake) where the girls J19 W6 finished 2nd in the 500m Plate final, which was a huge achievement due to the short time the girls had been together.
Surfing Surfing continues to be the fastest growing sport at Bay College. In March, 19 students attended the very popular two-day coaching school to further develop their skills with O’Neill Surf Academy on the Tutukaka Coast. A fantastic two days was had by all. It will be the turn of the Year 9 students in November to be introduced to this fantastic sport.
Snr Mixed Touch The Senior Mixed Touch team’ convincingly took out the Northland’Secondary School title over Kaitaia College at Lindvart Park in Kaikohe in March and was to go on to the Zone 1 competition in Auckland the following weekend. Some players had over-committed themselves, so sadly, it was not to be. Daynah Nankivell and Jessica Owen were selected to the Women’s U21 Te Tai Tokerau Touch team that competed at the Open Nationals tournament at Bruce Pullman Park in Takanini, Auckland on 3rd March. The team won gold scoring 6-5 against North Harbour in a nail biting final.
Girls Rugby 7’s Congratulations to Daynah Nankivell, Ngawaiora Davis, Jean Brown, Jessica Owen, Mia Ngawati and Dahlia Hill-Tahere who were selected the the Northland U18 Women’s Rugby 7’s team that competed at the Northland Island competition in Hamilton recently. The team finished in third place overall and came up against several NZ representatives and held their own throughout the tournament.
Futsal In early March, Bay College entered a boys and a girls team into the Northland Secondary School Futsal Champion-ships, which were held at Kensington in Whangarei. Futsal is an indoor sport and because the gymnasium rebuild is underway at the moment, both teams trained outside which was not ideal but thanks to both teams for their commitment. Congratulations to the girls team who finished third behind Whangarei Girls High School and Kerikeri High School.
Athletics: Congratulations once again to Totara House as they easily took out the Athletics Day title with 954 points. Miro House was second on 768 points and Rata third with 718. When one analyses the data, there wasn’t much between the three houses in terms of where they placed in individual competitions but what did stand out was that the number of students in Totara House that took part in the competitions was much greater than Miro or Rata House and those students entered more events on a per student basis. The bottom line is Totara House participation far exceeded that of the other two houses and that was the only difference on the day. In each of the divisions we recognise an overall champion who is determined by the points gained in placing in the top six of an event.
