SWIMMING CARNIVAL SUCCESS On what turned out to be a cracker of a day, about 300 students headed down to the Aquatic
Centre for a day of cheering, supporting and competing. Students were covered from head to
toe in their house colours, some going all out and competing in their colours. After the points
were tallied, the winner was ELECTRONS! The final point scores were:
ELECTRONS 1990
NEUTRONS 1668
MESONS 1309
PROTONS 966
Thank you to all staff who made this day a great success.
FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK
Parents, guardians, care givers and school play a critical role in developing positive attitudes
towards learning and education. When there is open communication between the different
learning spaces we can help our students navigate the adolescent years and the sometimes
difficult path. This term there have been over 250 phone calls home that recognise the positive
work or activities that your students have done or are doing around school. Congratulations to
all students for their commitment to learning and to the contribution that you make to your
school. If you have not received a phone call home yet it may be because your contact
details have changed and school records have not been updated. Please check for the
student and family details update note over the next week and return it to school.
Regular attendance is important as without students our teachers are not able to provide the
skills and experiences for our future leaders. Our staff strive to motivate and engage all
students in learning rather than accepting that some students cannot be engaged. The role of
the student is to participate in all learning opportunities and to rise to the challenges that our
teachers set. We encourage students to take responsibility for their learning and to leave inter-
personal issues at the door. I have visited many classrooms and seen the enthusiasm, passion,
hard work and dedication of our teachers in action, I am also seeing the result of these efforts
in the work that students are producing. As the term continues students will be participating in
assessments and formal examination as well as class tests.
It is very concerning when young people have been exposed to any content that scares them
or plays on their emotions, like those reported in the media of late. Approximately 81% of
parents hand their child an internet-connected device by the age of 4, so active parental
engagement and oversight of a child’s online activities is critical from the start, to help ensure
they are prepared for what they may encounter. It’s important to guide and instil critical
reasoning skills, so they are aware that not everything they see or receive online is real. We
encourage parents to co-view, co-play, ask questions about the games and apps they are
using, and let them know you are there to support them if they are upset or uncomfortable
about anything they see online. Five top tips to help limit your child’s exposure to harmful
content online:
Engage in your child’s online activities - ask what apps, sites and games they’re using
and make sure they’re age-appropriate
Ensure that kids know not to contact strangers online, regardless of the method
Setting privacy systems on devices with your child is a great way to have this
conversation and agree on automatic precautions. Let them know not everything they
see online is real or true
Help them report and block upsetting content they see on social media sites or apps
Let them know they can come to you about anything upsetting they see online and
contact Kids Helpline if they need further support.
Parents who are concerned their child may be susceptible to self-harm should be aware of the
signs to look out for and know where to go for help. See more info here:

PDHPE Assessment Reminders
Many of the PDHPE classes across the years are currently working on assessable items both in
class and at home. A reminder that if your child does not complete an assessment task and
hand it in on time for marking, it will affect the overall grade they are awarded for PDHPE. This
grade also has a practical effort, attitude and participation mark for lessons where students
participate in practical games, sports and various physical activities. Please note that this
component of the course is compulsory and students may only be excused from these classes
with a medical note during the time of injury recovery.

Netball Gala Day On Thursday 28th February, the Opens Netball team went down to
PCYC to compete in a Gala Day against schools from around the
region.
The three games within our pool were against Bathurst, Orange High C and Henry
Lawson. Although it was our first game playing altogether, the girls banded well together
and were excellent in defence. We were lucky enough to get the win against Henry
Lawson which then, on points, sent us to the finals.
The first game was against Cowra and we needed the win to progress. The girls were up
against a fierce team but they stuck to their guns and fought hard for the entire game.
Congratulations go to Tegan Wood, Erin Naden, Peta Morrison, Jorjah White, Tyshani Ah-
See, Teagan Masila, Taia McDonald, Montanna McIlwain-Browne, Chloe White, Ashley
Wood and Taliah Miller for a dynamic and inspiring day.

Year 7 CHPA student, Mackenzie Palazzi, ran in the Orange Running festival last weekend and completed
the ten 10km run in 58.10. Mackenzie’s results were:
143rd place out of 337 people (most adults)
64th place out of 192 females
4th place out of 9 under 20s
Congratulations on these outstanding results Mackenzie.
On Friday 1st March, the Open Boys Football team travelled to Cowra to play Cowra High
School in the first round of the NSWCHS State knockout.
With 11 players able to make the road trip, we were beaten by an older, full strength Cowra
team. Even though our team was under attacking pressure for most of the match, we did not
stop in our attempts to score. Our Year 7 team members played extremely well, considering
they were playing against much older and stronger opponents. We will grow as a team and
challenge again next year.
Some notable performances on the day include Jerome Beckett, Jai Anlezark, Joseph
Hathaway, Axel Ondevilla, Connor Shields and Cody O’Neill.
Squad: Jerome Beckett, Sam Tester, Axel Ondevilla, Jai Anlezark, Joseph Hathaway, Alex Brown,
Isaiah King, Connor Shields, Cody O’Neill, Nick Clark and Callum Tester.

On Thursday 21 March, the Open Boys and Girls Basketball teams competed in the first round of
the WSSA Open Basketball Competition. The boys were successful in gaining a position in the
WSSA Finals in March.
The boys played Blayney High in their first game. Blayney’s centre is a NSW representative, and
his size and presence certainly intimidated the boys initially. The first three quarters were close,
with Canobolas not being able to make a lead of more than 3 points. The final quarter saw the
boys have a run of 8 unanswered points, securing the lead and run out winners 34-22.
Orange High was the boys next opposition. Canobolas got off to a great start but Orange High
rallied well and took a 2 point lead into the half time break. The Canobolas boys stepped up
defensively and kept Orange High to just 2 points in the third quarter, while doubling their first half
score in just one quarter to take a 30-19 lead into the final break. Canobolas continued to pile on
the points to win the game 46-27.
The final game for the boys was against Canowindra High. Canobolas completely outclassed
Canowindra from the tip off. Both teams enjoyed a social game, with lots of entertaining
passages of play. The final score was 83-24 to Canobolas.
With only two games to play, the girls faced
Orange High School in round one. It was always
going to be a difficult match competing
against such a strong side. The girls still
managed to play their hearts out and never
gave up.
The second game against Blayney High School
was a success story and their win was well
deserved. As the girl’s level of confidence
continued to grow, they became more
involved and aggressive on the ball. The girls
played well as a team and found opportunities
to ensure baskets were being scored.
Each and every student represented our school
with such pride ……..an awesome achievement
overall!

Wollongong University Discovery Day
On the 6th and 7th of February, sixteen Year 12 students travelled to explore the possibilities which
the University of Wollongong has to offer.
The 6th was filled with the students sightseeing at Mt. Keira and visiting City Beach. Fortunately,
the students were privileged to have stayed on campus in one of the newest buildings. This gave
them a great insight into what living on campus really encompasses as well as enjoying the
some delicious meals they were provided.
On the 7th, the students were joined by numerous other schools from different regions to attend
informational sessions which targeted the main courses which the University of Wollongong
offers. The students were provided with a great range of sessions which gave them an
understanding of how life at university would function. Sessions ranged from Law, Nursing and
Philosophy, to touring the campus and learning about furthering our university experience, such
as overseas studies.
Throughout the day, the students were also presented with what is available around the campus
in their lunch hour such as the library resources, supermarkets, medical clinics and a variety of
areas which you can utilise for study and recreation.
An overall agreement was made by the students that they day was a complete success and
that it gave them a great overview and insight into how the life of a university student can be
both fun and rewarding.
Thank you to Mr Marriott for the fantastic opportunity and organisation of the trip and Miss Neve
for her hard working efforts to keep the students sane. Catherine Nicholson
