Hey everyone! 2016 has been such a wonderful year! Thanks for coming on so many programmes and for making my first year with Recreate so special and full of wonderful adventures. It has been great spending time with some regular Recreaters as well as meeting some new participants! TERM 1 2017 January, February, March, April We have had some pretty incredible programmes in the last term, and I hope you have enjoyed it as much as I have! The Lake Lyndon camp was a goodie involving so many adventures; staying in the lodge overlooking the beautiful lake, the bush survival skills we learnt and exploring Castle Hill. The Pancake Rocks on our West Coast getaway was definitely one of my highlights! The High Tea in Oxford was our very first Girls Club event, and they will definitely be many more of those. I hope this year finishes off on a high note for you all and that you have a wonderful Christmas break and a very happy New Year! Ka kite anō | See you soon, Esthie News I’m pleased to advise that at our recent AGM in October 2016, all existing officers and trustees re-stood and were reappointed. The current make-up of the board of trustees therefore remains: Chair, Craig Wheatley; Deputy Chair, Ezekiel Robson; Secretary, Sue Small; Treasurer Helen Cussell; Trustees, Carol Chouhfeh, Heather Alford, Louise Judd, and Rob Byrne. An interesting comment from one of the attending parents gave me pause to thought. It was around some of the Recreate NZ statistics presented. Accordingly I thought that these statistics may be of interest to share with our readers. Recreate NZ currently employs 1 full-time and 9 permanent part- time employees – plus our three Moxie employees, Braedyn, Sam and Star. Recreate employs 6-7 casual programme facilitators who you will know very well by now, they are often past employees that wish to stay involved. Recreate NZ currently needs to fill over 650 volunteer positions pa. This equates to 7,800+ volunteer hours per year, averaging 151 hours per week. We love our volunteer! The reason for so many volunteers is that we run so many programmes! Recreate offers four programme ‘streams – adventure, recreation, social and education. Within these streams there are 10 differing programme ‘types’ which means that we will be facilitating over 330 individually tailored programmes next year. That’s 520 days of programme with 2850+ programme places available for Recreate juniors, youth and young adults in Auckland Christchurch and the Waikato. What does that mean for parents? Over 4,000 days of respite per annum!! Just to Note: The office will be closed 23rd December through to 9th January 2017 That’s all from me this time, enjoy our upcoming programmes and enjoy your Christmas break. LIFE SKILLS

Life Skills is a self-directed day programme focused on developing confidence in certain skills required for independence, socialisation, healthy living an entering the workforce. It has been a great success in Auckland and we have the opportunity to start it in Christchurch. Activities practiced include cooking, public transport, gardening, budgeting, fitness and household jobs. The course is limited to 4 young people of a similar age/ability and will be self-directed by those who participate, with guidance from a Recreate facilitator. The facilitator will oversee the course, assisting each participant in deciding on an action plan to facilitate their activity preferences.

Life Skills is targeted at the post-school, young adult age group. Expressions of interest will dictate whether we determine each course for youth (15-25 years) or young adults (25-35 years)

It will run one day a week at 18 Bath Street, South City.

Start date: The week of 6th February 2017 (day TBC)

The course will run for 8 weeks. The cost is $80 full course deposit plus 8 carer support days. If you would like to express interest in the Life Skills course, please email [email protected]
