TERM 1 2016
ISSUE No:3
25th Feb (hui-tanguru)
From our principal
Last week we held our first evacuation drill and I am pleased to report it
was a real success and our systems worked well. On review we have
decided to move the assembly area to the roundabout area behind Te Pā
Harakeke in front of the orchard. This space is bigger and will allow us to
set up good procedures now before the school grows larger. Obviously we
will cone off the area so there is no vehicle access in the case of an
emergency (except for emergency vehicles).
Our establishment board chairperson has included an open letter to the
community with this newsletter. The board did a phenomenal job
preparing our beautiful school to open and their work continues today
with our charter work and planning for the future. I hope you are able to
take the time to read this letter.
Finally, thanks to our amazing local Police Officers and Firefighters for
volunteering your time with our learners. We all loved learning about the
Police dogs and being squirted by the fire hoses (thanks to the Army too!).
Sylvia (Ms Fidow pronounced fee-dough)

Introducing Our Team
Tess Johnsen
2016 is going to be 'a year of new' for me. I am so very fortunate to be
able to join the incredible team at West Rolleston and begin the
journey of growing a new school and a new team of learners. I will
also be new to Christchurch, having lived in Central Otago, teaching at
The Terrace Primary School for the past 3 years. I will even have a
new husband at the end of Term One!
I am passionate about The Arts – I can’t wait to see how our
performing arts studio is coming along and finally get a taste of all the
artistic talent within our school community.
In my spare time you will likely find me hunting out a good fishing spot
– I hear there are some great rivers in Canterbury!
I really look forward to meeting you all and beginning the exciting
adventure that lies ahead.

Message from the Establishment Board of Trustees
By the time this gets to print the school would have been “operational” for just on a month – but there is a whole back-
story that we should all be aware of that has happened well before we opened the doors to the children! A little under
2 years ago we sat with a blank canvas, a new Board and some eager MoE and architects/advisers, to plan out West
Rolleston Primary School. A rather bleak and weathered paddock was the starting point, with lots of advice from people
that know about this stuff to guide us. Now, looking at what we have done, it is pretty impressive. It wasn’t easy, but
then - good things are never easy to achieve, and to be fair the MoE, the advisers, the innumerable contractors, project
managers, and entourage of trades people have done an amazing job and have really made it the best possible outcome
for the children!
Building the physical asset was probably the easiest bit of this project. The most important part for the Board has been
establishing the vision, values, the culture and the way we see West Rolleston moving forward. Fundamental to this is
getting the right staff in place – we are delighted to have Sylvia as our Principal and she has created an inspirational,
compassionate and highly professional team in Ben, Amanda, Rebecca, Megan, Kate, Laura, Tessa, Peter, Emma, Kirsten,
Trish and Amy. Also as part of this is the inclusion of Waitaha – how fantastic it is to have them join us as a part of the
school!
As the Board worked through how we would like to see West Rolleston for our children, the importance of
environmental and sustainable practice was forefront in our minds. This was challenging for the MoE at construction, as
items like Solar and LED lighting didn’t form part of their standards – but we persevered and have managed to build this
in, as well as numerous other efficiency specifications that will be used as educational opportunities for the children. It
was with huge satisfaction that last week we launched our Solar program with Genesis (SchoolGen) – our school is
running pretty much on 100% solar at the moment – over a year this will see money available for other resources in the
school – that has to be a good thing!
An area that we are really passionate about as a Board is the area of school fees – you may have noted that we have
a No-fee policy, but do ask for koha – what this means, in really simple terms is – we want our parents to be involved
in the school, to assist in areas where they can, to provide expertise and actual hands-on help when we need it. Fees
are really an offset of operating costs in a school – we can only manage this with your help. So – if you can help in the
library, take away some recyclables, do a window-wash, pull some weeds, read to the children, help with sports, lift-
and-shift stuff – whatever you can do to help, we welcome it. Right now we need help in all these areas – don’t be
shy – a school is a community when we all help. Talk to Sylvia!
Finally, we will be holding elections this year for our Board of Trustees – another way to help! There will be more
information coming out about this in due-course – but feel free to ask me about my experience! It is a wonderful thing
to be able to do for our kids!!!!
Simon McDermott, Chair, West Rolleston Primary School Board of Trustees.
