Vancouver’s Waterfront development project will reconnect 35 acres along the Columbia River to the city’s historic core, creating a vibrant community for all to enjoy. The Waterfront is envisioned as a destination where urban vitality, prized livability and natural beauty come together on the Columbia River and ultimately transform downtown Vancouver. The project has been realized, thus far, through the collaborative public-private partnership of the developer and City, as well as the substantial support of numerous agencies and individuals. The development will include 1.2 million sq.ft. of office space, 400,000 sq. ft. of retail space, including restaurants and hotels, a 7-acre public park and 2,500-3,500 residential units. The overall redevelopment project is the largest economic development project in Vancouver’s history. The project will result in: 12,614 construction jobs 2,700 permanent direct jobs 4,750 indirect permanent jobs In early 2014, the city completed a $44.6 million project that constructed two vehicle and pedestrian access points under the railroad berm to connect downtown to the waterfront development area, brought utilities to the site and addressed rail- related safety and noise issues. Next, the City will begin construction of the primary arterial for the development – linking Grant and Esther Streets via the new openings in the railroad berm with Columbia Way. This project will be complete at the end of 2015.
