In the short time that I’ve been at Center School, I’ve been impressed with the teaching and learning that is happening in classrooms and specialist areas, the respectful environment in the school and the high degree of organization that makes the school run so well. Janeen Sheelen and Concie Kniager deserve special recognition for help- ing to make my entry so smooth. Last week, as part of my entry, I met with the HPTA Center School Vice Presi- dents, Michelle Crowe and Kristy Willadsen. We re- viewed upcoming events and began to make plans for the spring. I’m looking forward to the start of Mileage Club after April Vacation. Many thanks to the HPTA for Jarrett Kro- soczka’s visit to the first graders. The children were very excited to meet the author of Lunch Lady. This week, we welcome well known storyteller, Len Cabral, who will entertain all our kindergartners. Thanks to the HPTA for hosting the Principal’s Cof- fee (with coffee!) last Fri- day morning. Many par- ents noted that they appre- ciated the invitation to bring younger siblings. I hope you’ll put the date of the next coffee, Friday, April 5 th , on your calendars now. Siblings will be wel- come again. Janeen Sheelen and I have started to work on making the front hallways more child friendly and welcom- ing. In the next few weeks, we hope to see more stu- dent artwork on display. We have put in requests to have some of the bulletin boards lowered so young- sters can see them at their eye level and a request to have the front hallways repainted. Hopefully, by spring, we’ll be a little brighter. In the classrooms, teachers have now finished the win- ter DIBELS assessment. DIBELS, or the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills, provide teachers with information about each child’s acquisi- tion of early literacy and early reading skills. Before February vacation, first grade teachers will give students a short math as- sessment to look at pro- gress in mathematics. All these assessments give us valuable information about student progress and help us pinpoint specific areas where children may benefit from additional in-class support. Merideth Ekwall, the Director of Elementary Education, and I will work with the teachers to make good use of all this valuable information. Valentine’s Day marks the 100 th day of school this year. I hope you will take a few moments to think back to September and to enjoy the progress your child has made this year. Center School musicians celebrated

the bitter cold January Days with

songs Kindergarten musicians

acted out the nursery song lsquoThe

North Wind Doth Blowrsquo which ex-

pressed concern for a poor robin

trying to keep itself warm How

they love the lsquoMitten Songrsquo As we

hold up our hands and sing each

child anticipates whether or not I

might clap their hands for every

rhyming word ndash as I continue to

walk around the circle The children

in Grade One worked on their song

lsquoDancing Snowflakesrsquo in preparation

for the upcoming All School Meet-

ing We also sang our lsquoJanuary

Songrsquo with words suggesting how we

have to ldquoTurn up the heat and warm

our feetrdquo They were fascinated

with two songs based on the Italian

words legato (smooth) and staccato

(short and snappy) No only do

these words remind the students of

the meaning of the words but your

children are also able to express the

musical quality as they sing each

song First Grade musicians are

learning the rsquoldquoChinese New Year

Songrsquo and they are discovering how

this song is built upon the interest-

ing pentatonic scale Soon they will

be learning to play the lsquoChinese

New Year Songrsquo on xylophones and

metallophones Kindergarten chil-

dren were delighted to sing songs

about caterpillars lsquoArabella Millerrsquo

and lsquoA Fuzzy Little Caterpillarrsquo lsquo

January Days are Shortrsquo led to a

discussion about how the days be-

Your children are becoming good

listeners and moved to my music

according to the way in which I im-

able to determine what motions to

use based upon what they heard

Movement activities also involved

music by Mozart for the musicians

in both Kindergarten and those in

Grade One Kindergarten students

did a scarf dance as they listened to

Mozartrsquos Eine Kleine Nachtmusik

Grade One students created a hu-

man statue of lsquostonersquo as they lis-

Grade One musicians recently com-

pleted their study of Mozart They

were intrigued with the life and the

interesting childhood of this musical

prodigy We listened to a minuet a

piano sonata and some excerpts

from symphonies including his fa-

Several classes colored a well-

known portrait of this classical com-

poser when he was a famous six-

Is It a Cold or the Flu

Itrsquos that time of year again- cold and flu season is in full

swing I am continuing to see colds and flu-like illness here

in the nursersquos office Viruses cause both colds and the flu

Sometimes at the beginning of an illness it can be difficult

to tell which one your child has

Seasonal flu is a respiratory illness that comes around

every year usually beginning in December and peaking in

late January or February It can last well into March or

April and can sometimes lead to complications such as

bronchitis or pneumonia Cough and fever are almost al-

ways present in flu cases and the fever is usually quite

high Extreme exhaustion is another hallmark of the flu

and the lethargy and fatigue can last up to a few weeks

With a cold often there is low grade or no fever and the

cough is generally less severe than that associated with flu

Headache and general aches and pains are rare or very

slight with the flu they are often severe With a cold

sneezing and stuffy nose are frequent and very rare with

the flu

The best way to try to cut down on the frequency of colds is

teaching your child good hand washing practices- before

eating after using the bathroom after coughing or sneez-

ing into his or her hand and even after blowing or picking

their nose (yes they do that at school) Help keep their

immune system stronger by encouraging a good nightrsquos

sleep drinking plenty of fluids and eating healthy foods

Itrsquos okay to turn up the volume with your voice as you cheer for

your teachers playing basketball against the Harlem Wizards

Please come cheer for Mr Sanford Mr Milan and Mr

Norton at Hopkinton High School as they take on

the Harlem Wizards on February 10th at 3 PM

We need your support

Healthy News Update from our School Nurse

Page 4 Center School Times

We teach the students to sneeze or cough into the crook of

their elbows if a tissue is not readily available You can

practice that at home as well

The flu can be prevented or the severity of it lessened by

getting the annual flu vaccine This is recommended for

all children over 6 months of age

If you or your child does get sick stay at home to rest

This helps prevent others around you at school or work

from getting sick too It can also help speed the recovery

and lessen the chance of complications

This helps prevent others around you at school or work

from getting sick too It can also help speed the recovery

and lessen the chance of complications

not have to worry about calling in while away
