Linda Hoover, Dean

College of Human Sciences

Texas Tech University

Lubbock, TX 79409-1162

Dear Dean Hoover:

This letter is in support of Mitzi Lauderdale, JD for tenure and promotion to Associate Professor

in the Department of Personal Financial Planning (PFP) in the College of Human Sciences at

Texas Tech University. Professor Lauderdale is a member of the Graduate Faculty. Based on

my review of Professor Lauderdale’s dossier, including her external letters and the unanimous

vote of the faculty at the department level, I fully support her bid for tenure and promotion.

Professor Lauderdale joined the PFP faculty in 2008 as an Assistant Professor, following her

service as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Nutrition, Hospitality and Retailing.

Professor Lauderdale has taught at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and has been

involved in significant curriculum development. She restructured several courses, and developed

the only course in the nation on legal and regulatory aspects in personal financial planning. This

course adds a unique dimension to the personal financial planning curriculum and positions

students to enter the profession more successfully. In both departments, Professor Lauderdale has

been recognized for her teaching, including nominations for the President’s Excellence in

Teaching Award and winning the PFP Teacher of the Year for two consecutive years. She also

won the New Faculty Award in 2010, an award based on student evaluations, innovative

teaching activities, initiation of research/creative activities, and interaction with students.

Despite changing departments while at Texas Tech University, Professor Lauderdale has

remained consistently productive in her program of research. Her underlying understanding of

the law has been the common thread throughout her research in both departments. I am

particularly impressed with Professor Lauderdale’s work related to special needs planning, as are

many of her external reviewers. Financial planning for special needs individuals and their

families is an extremely important and under-researched area of inquiry in which Professor

Lauderdale has published successfully and for which she has received external grant funding. To

quote an external reviewer, “this research is becoming more significant as the Boomers begin to

retire, and at the same time, they have caregiving responsibilities for their own very elderly

parents and grandparents.”

Overall, Professor Lauderdale has a diversified portfolio of research activities that include

journal publications, four of the nine in top-rated journals, and as lead author on two of those

Page 11: TENURE AND PROMOTION DOSSIER - TTU · Chan, H.K., Wu, Ti-Hsien, Kizildag, and Lauderdale, M. (2008). The Perceptions of Accessible Tourism of the Students Majoring n Hospitality.

four papers. Her work was recognized in 2008 by the American Council of Consumer Interest

by receiving the CPF Board’s Best Paper Award. She has actively presented at academic

conferences and successfully gathered over $51,000 in external research dollars. Professor

Lauderdale was also asked to co-author one of the most respected textbooks in Estate Planning.

Professor Lauderdale has an extremely strong record of service, administration, and outreach.

Her service at the department, college, and university has been notable for an assistant professor.

She “hit the ground running” in terms of her ability and willingness to support university

activities. In addition to committee service, Professor Lauderdale has served as the Program

Director for the Undergraduate PFP Program where she was responsible of for undergraduate

recruitment, retention, and course offerings. She is currently Associate Department Chair. In

this capacity, Professor Lauderdale works with numerous external groups to support the PFP

Department and has taken leadership in departmental assessment activities. Associated to her

departmental service, specifically as departmental liaison to the PFP Alumni Board, are

unrestricted gifts and pledges of $170,000 via the PFP Double T Society Development

Campaign.

I believe that Professor Lauderdale has a record of superior academic achievement and a

national, professional reputation that meets the criteria for promotion to Associate Professor with

tenure at Texas Tech University. Her external letters attest to the national recognition and stature

that she has achieved, and the unanimous departmental vote demonstrates Professor Lauderdale’s

importance on the PFP faculty.

Sincerely,

Vickie L. Hampton

Chair, Department of Personal Financial Planning

Great teacher, very knowledgeable in the subjects she teaches. Best at Tech!!!

She is great at getting the class involved. Really amazing at teaching

The teaching strategy is very effective, keep it up!

Best professor in the PFP department. I appreciate her style of teaching, interaction

with students, office availability. She also encourages constructive criticism to

improve future class and I have nothing

Wonderful professor, by far the BEST one within the program

The amount of questions asked each class was overwhelming and it was harder to

follow when student pulled the content in so many random directions.

Really enjoyed the professor! She knew what she was talking about and made the

subject interesting

Tough class, good presentation of information. A lot of information on exams though

Great class. The discussions stimulate learning very well. Instructor is very

knowledgeable

Great teacher!!!

Knows her stuff! Awesome teacher

Thank you for making this course fun and easy to access. The method for presenting

material is effective for me because discussions in class help me process information

and I am able to retain it better

Another great course by Dr. Lauderdale. Despite all of the roadblocks, she

encountered along the way (kids being sick, escorting VIP visitors, etc) she still

managed to maintain the professional classroom environment for the students. Tough

class, tough material, good teacher. Thanks, Dr. Lauderdale

Dr. Lauderdale is one of my favorite teachers I have. She is a great teacher and

effectively delivers all the material in the best way possible. Her knowledge for the

materials went above and beyond what any professor that I have taken knows. I am

looking forward to taking her next class

Really great class!! Challenging at times, confusing, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Great

job Dr. Lauderdale!

I like how you encourage questions and review each chapter before the quizzes and

test, it helps out a lot!

Liked how flexible the class was. Learned best when we used real world situations

Instructor did very well and welcomed all questions, made the students feel

comfortable, book was the only thing that was complex to understand

Wonderful job getting the class involved and presenting information in a useful way

Enjoyed the class

Overall I enjoyed this class. The text was easy to read and understand and the

lectures helped clarify

I loved your class! The book was easy to read and I did not dread doing the reading

assignments.

I love the way we discuss what we read so it is easy to follow instead of just

lecturing

You should be allowed one unexcused absence, people have lives; individuals should

not be punished and forced to take the final

Malinda Colwell February 2012 Dr. Colwell had the pleasure of observing Dr. Lauderdale's PFP 3378 class on February 28, 2012 and Dr. Adams observed the class on April 12, 2012. Dr. Lauderdale did an outstanding job of organizing the class and had a very engaging teaching style. She began class by inviting feedback about Opportunity Days, which the students had assisted with the week before. She then reviewed the previous chapter and provided many examples and questions to remind the students of the topic. After a review, students completed a quiz and the correct answers were discussed before moving on to new information about estate planning. Throughout her lecture, Dr. Lauderdale drew parallels with the current information and information either previously discussed in her class or in other courses, as well as foreshadowed related information that they would cover by the end of the course. Dr. Lauderdale showed excellent rapport with her students. The class had a positive atmosphere. Many students participated in class and it was clear that students were comfortable with asking and answering questions. She gave excellent examples and expanded on information when students needed additional information. She also scaffolded responses to encourage students to answer their own question or to help their peers understand. At the end of the class, students completed calculations together and then the answers were discussed with the whole class. Dr. Lauderdale showed enthusiasm for the material she covered in class and clearly showed her knowledge of the topics. Her lecture style was conversational, engaging, and displayed a real commitment to student learning. Her PowerPoint slides were clear and easy to follow. Dr. Lauderdale did an excellent job!

Excerpts from Peer Reviewer Comments: Charlie Adams February 2012 Mitzi Lauderdale is one of the best teachers I have ever observed! Deborah Fowler April 2012 Mitzi is a gifted teacher. We were especially impressed by the way she kept control of the class and kept them on topic. She has an obvious great rapport with the students and is very committed.

Don Collier April 2012 Really nice job! Very inspiring! Enjoyed the class and learned a lot.

Samina Khan April 2008 Dr. Lauderdale is obviously knowledgeable of her subject matter. Her style of presentation is serious, well in keeping with the course content. The course was designed and taught at an appropriate level for senior students, she made good use of current technological resources such as PowerPoint and Turing point remote. From the stand point of this observer it was one of the most stimulating classes to attend.

Dottie Durband March 2008 Examples were provided throughout the lecture to support appropriate actions by employers as well as actions they should avoid. The instructor frequently called on her students by their name, asking questions and probing for examples that they had seen in their work settings.
