Story

Hi, my name is Bernadine Stevens but I like to be called Bernie. I am 56 years young and live in Cardiff. I would like to tell you about my achievement on my weight loss.

I have always struggled with my weight but since moving to my home 3 years ago, I have a positive attitude and a good staff team to encourage me to lose some weight. I joined Slimming World about 18 months ago. I really enjoy going to Slimming World. Not only is it a good way of meeting new friends, it has given me the confidence and determination to lose weight. I am very happy to say I have lost 2 stone and I am still continuing to lose weight. I enjoy cooking lots of different Slimming World meals and feel much happier and healthier.

Gary Engl lives in Cardiff and enjoys fishing.

He goes every Tuesday to Peterstone

Lake in Newport.

Here is a photo of a fish he caught at

Peterstone Lake.

Gary has also been lake fishing at Centre Parks, on holiday in

Longleat and sea fishing in Tenby.

Alyson tells us about what she enjoys doing Alyson Perkins lives in Cardiff and shares her

home with Peggy and Marilyn.

Alyson enjoys cooking and works 2 days a week in a café. She helps prepare the food and washes the dishes. To keep fit, Alyson goes swimming every Wednesday and cycling every Friday. Alyson has also been going to Weight Watchers and has so far lost 2½ stone in weight. Well done Alyson.

Tenant Councils Spring 2016 In March we held Tenant Council meetings in Wrexham and Shrewsbury.

At these meetings our tenants were told about our Taking Part activities and watched a film about the last Board of Management meeting. The tenants gave us feedback on our Self-Evaluation work for Welsh Government. All feedback was positive.

Adam Bartle lives in Maesteg. Adam works in the Dogs Trust charity shop in Maesteg every Wednesday. Adam likes to keep fit and goes to his local gym a few times a week and sometimes he likes to play golf. Adam is also a member of a canoe club in Maesteg Pool and goes canoeing every week

10 pin bowling in Tonyrefail In March a group of First Choice tenants from Rhondda Cynon Taff met up for some 10 pin bowling. We had lots of fun and enjoyed burgers and chips after we finished bowling. Ryan from Aberdare was the highest scorer on the night!

Mark Evans lives in Cardiff. Mark likes travelling on trains and watching trains. Mark is going to go on a holiday on a train. Let us know how you enjoy your holiday Mark!


First Choice Mini Garden Makeover

Congratulations to:- Lynne, Rita, Josephine, Janice and Lynnette in Glynneath who have won the First Choice mini garden makeover. This will be carried out in August. More to follow in the next newsletter.

Welsh Government ‘regulates’ or checks that First Choice is a well run housing association and is giving you a good service. There are 10 areas or ‘delivery outcomes’ that we have to look at in our self-evaluation. The 3rd area that the Welsh Government asked First Choice about was whether: WE MAKE SURE OUR PURPOSE IS CLEAR AND WE ACHIEVE WHAT WE SET OUT TO DO –KNOWING WHO DOES WHAT AND WHY We told the Welsh Government

1. First Choice has strong leaders who make good decisions. 2. First Choice Board members control what we do and do what’s best for Tenants. 3. First Choice are independent and keep the

rules of the Association. 4. First Choice know why we are here and have the right staff and equipment to achieve our goals. 5. First Choice make sure that we get value for money and make the best of our money and any money we may get from Welsh Government grants . 6. First Choice considers how well we are doing and always looks to do better. 7. First Choice knows why we are here, looks for new ideas and always learns from others. We will tell you about question 4 in the Autumn Tenants’ Voice newsletter.

The evening started with a choir. There was a 3 course meal and a singer. After the meal everyone enjoyed a disco. A great evening was had by all.


PG’s TIPS

My name is Philip Green.

I work in the maintenance team at First Choice Housing Association.

You may have seen me visit you at home in the past.

Here is my advice for being safe in the Summer sun.

Drink plenty of water.

Keep out of the sun in the middle of the day.

Cover up with a hat and loose, long-sleeved clothing. Remember to use a suitable sun screen lotion to protect your skin from sun burn.

Try not to do too much exercise.


PG’s TIPS

You can feel unwell if you do not take care in the hot Summer sun

Heat Exhaustion — is caused by a loss of salt and water from your body, usually by sweating more than normal.

Heatstroke— is caused by your body becoming too hot.

Sunburn— is caused by too much sun causing red or burnt skin.

Heat rash— is caused by sweat glands becoming blocked causing a rash of tiny red spots.

What was decided at the Board of Management meeting on 19th April 2016

Gordon Brown is a new Board Member. A new Strategic Housing Manager will start work in August 2016.

First Choice will enter into a 7 year lease with Shropshire County Council for a new property. 14 new properties with 57 bed spaces were finished last year. First Choice received £1,181,828 more Social Housing Grant last year.

The Board of Management agreed this work:- 2016-21 Development Plan 2016-17 Budget Report 2016-19 Strategic Objectives New ways for First Choice to work with Private Occupational Therapists were agreed if they are needed.

There were no complaints more than one month old.

First Choice Recipe


Chorizo & soft-boiled egg salad

Ingredients

500g bag baby new potatos, halved 4 eggs 225g green beans, trimmed 225g chorizo ring, sliced 1 garlic clove, sliced 2 tbsp sherry vinegar 2 tbsp chopped parsley Method 1. Cook the potatoes in a large pan of boiling salted water for

12 mins, adding the eggs after 6 mins, and the beans for the final 2 mins. Drain everything and cool the eggs under cold running water.

2. Meanwhile fry chorizo slices for 1-2 mins, until beginning to

crisp. Remove from the pan with a slotted spoon and set aside, leaving the oil from the chorizo in the pan. Add the garlic to the pan and cook gently for 1 min.

3. Remove the pan from the heat, stir in the vinegar and parsley, then toss with the potatoes, beans, chorizo and seasoning. Shell the eggs, cut into quarters and add to the Salad.
