KEEPING OUR TUB WATER CLEAN Guests often remark that they’ve never seen hot tubs as clean as ours. It’s no accident. Water is our fundamental product and we make heroic efforts to keep it pristine. Those using any public pool or spa should observe the clarity of the water—if you can see the face of a quarter on the bottom of the pool, it’s a good indicator that the pool is being properly maintained. Thirty years ago we realized that the chlorine and bromine sanitation used by almost all pools and spas in the US was less than optimal. Our water then was cloudy, foamy, and smelled like bleach (like many spas you may have experienced elsewhere). We researched and developed a proprietary filtration and sanitation system. The New Mexico Environment Department—one of the most progressive in the US—was convinced by the science and sanctioned the system for all our hot tubs and cold plunges. The entire volume of water in each hot tub and cold plunge at the Waves goes through a sanitation and filtration cycle every 10-25 minutes. In the support room the water flows through a clear tube bombarded by UV light which kills 96% of all bacteria and virus.

Ozone gas is then added for additional sanitizing and polishing.

We test all tubs every two hours to maintain the proper pH and level of hydrogen peroxide in the water. The peroxide and ozone oxidize any remaining organic material and pathogens. Some of the component molecules of these organics outgas into the

atmosphere, some are filtered out, and some become dissolved solids which are harmless but must be diluted through daily addition of water and regular draining. To guarantee that our system is functioning properly, we do weekly bacterial cultures on every tub at the Waves.Feel confident knowing that our tub water may be purer than what flows from your tap.
