History of Site
2002 Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) discovered in the
Ten-Mile Drain and discharging into the canal
Lange Canal Aerial
2002 & 2003 Cleaned drain anddredged the most contaminatedsections of the canal.
May 2005 drilled 64 additionalsoil samples locations insuspected source areas
Installed a liner within a portion of the drain in 2006 toreduce/prevent PCB infiltration
Lined portion ofthe drain=1,000 ft
Superfund Program
Remedial Actions: long-term cleanups designed to prevent or minimize
the release of hazardous substances and to reduce the risk and danger topublic health or the environment.
Removal Actions: immediate, short-term responses intended to protect
people from immediate threats posed by hazardous waste sites.

Soil Core
Searching for aPotentially Responsible Party (PRP)
EPA civil investigator finds evidence based on your tips.
Superfund Program Funding
The Superfund Trust Fund: In 1980s the money came mainly from taxes on thechemical and petroleum industries.
The Trust Fund is use primarily if no potentially responsible parties are found orprps can not pay.
The tax ended in 1990, today money for the Superfund Program appropriatedby Congress
**PRP search is ongoing throughout the cleanup process****Funding is available whether we find a PRP or not**
2010 Activities
15 weirs installed (total of 17)
Collected Sediment Samples behind the weirs
Source Investigation: Followed-up on tips from the public43 borings (98 samples)
EPA removed sediment from the drain
Subsurface investigation: Ground Penetrating Radar, Electro Magnetic (EM)
Collected Groundwater samples from 6 permanent monitoring wells(Bon Brae and Harper)
Removed sediment and PCBs from the drain byDewatering and high-pressure jet vacuuming
Weirs were installed to….1) Prevent movement of sediment2) Assist in identifying PCB source area
Weirs installed at selected Manholes along Bon Brae, Harper,Lakeland Street and the corner of Jefferson and Bon Brae
