Clearing up the Churchyard Thanks to the stalwarts who have once again (on Feb 8th) turned out to help clear ivy from the church yard. This is obviously an on-going task and in one sense will never be completed but doing this once or twice a year will produce a welcoming and attractive entrance to the church.
What do you think the police priorities should be for our area? Tina Goddard is our Parish Councillor on the Police Community Forum and has good links with our police force. In her meetings with them she often has the opportunity to put forward more specific village concerns. Please let her know of any that you have.
Enhancing our village signs. Juliet Pennington’s designs of village name-sign planters were completed just before Christmas and since then she has planted them up. I’m sure they’ll be an excellent floral welcome to Tempsford. Thank you Juliet.
Garden Waste Collections suspended for the winter The collections of garden waste (in the green bags) will resume on Friday, 6th March 2020. Adrian Besant, Parish Council Chairman

TEMPSFORD TIMES AND KIER Tempsford has been proud to have for many years the international headquarters of such a well-known firm as Kier in the village. Over time we have seen its growth and redevelopment and, just as importantly, its maintenance of Tempsford Hall and its adjoining estate. Many local people have worked at Kier and the village cricket team once played its matches in the grounds. In the last 7-8 years the firm has become more involved with village activities, in particular renting a corner of its land to the Parish Council for a larger play area for Station Road children. Several village events were sponsored by Kier such as the most recent two Village Shows. Special mention must be made with this publication in mind of Kier’s sponsorship of its printing since Jan 2014. This has enabled the Tempsford Times to be produced in full colour on glossy heavier weight paper giving it the attractive professional finish that we‘ve become proud of, with the opportunity to include good quality colour photographs. We have all heard the news that Kier, in one form or another, will be leaving the village, so we were not surprised to receive the news that Kier will no longer be able to sponsor the printing of Tempsford Times. This now means we must find not only another printing company but also another sponsor or we will need to increase the amount of advertising revenue. In the short term the Parish Council has agreed to underwrite the cost, so that the Tempsford Times can continue to be published. We have just found another printing firm and we hope you will find it is produced in a similar professional way as before.
We therefore wish Kier, well in its future re-structuring, and all its employees in their future careers. We thank them for the work they have done for Tempsford over the years in many ways; Kier has been true to its advertising tag line of “helping to support our local community and everyone within it. PARISH COUNCIL MEETING NOTES:- The following is a summary of the main points of discussion at the Parish Council Meeting held on the 20th January 2020. Full copies of the Minutes are available on the village website www.tempsford.org or from the Clerk. Present: - 6 Elected Councillors and the Clerk. 1 CBC Councillor and 3 members of the public. Apologies:- No apologies were received. Declarations of interest: - None were received. Acceptance of Minutes: - Minutes of the Ordinary Meeting held on the 18
th
November 2019 were approved by Council and signed by the Chairman. Police Report: - Cllr. Goddard attended the last Priority Meeting and gave a report on the main items discussed: - Select Mark Security, like smart water but uses DNA dots. DI Chris Hutton the Digital Innovation Team gave a report on a new piece of digital software, a live video streaming tool. She also spoke to PC James Hunt who covers Tempsford regarding concerns of the residents. Cllr. Goddard has also asked residents to let her know what their priorities are, but only 2 were received. She will be asking again. Also Speed Watch was discussed. Public Session: A resident asked if the Parish Council could ask CBC to put a proper footpath notice up at the end of the Ouse Farm driveway indicating that part of the footpath is closed. The Chairman will follow this up. Planning – No application received. Highways: - The Chairman gave a short report about the number of pot-holes, the Little Barford road closure and A1 closure. A discussion was had on the problems with sewers in Church Street. The Clerk had contacted Anglian Water regarding the repairs needed and the mess that has been produced. They said they would keep the Parish Council up to date with progress and it was agreed by the Council that Anglian Water should be asked to come and talk to the residents of Tempsford. Chairman/Clerk to organise. Green Infrastructure – The planters around the Village signs have been installed and are an excellent addition to the village. A plaque has been put on each one indicating the contribution that a resident had in making them. The Clerk informed the Council that if anything else is needed from the Green Infrastructure fund, it must be ordered by 31
st January.

Central Beds. Council – Adam Zerny was in attendance – At this present time the East-West rail route has not been decided on. Building was still going ahead in Potton. He did not have anything to say relating to Tempsford. If there was anything that needs chasing up, please let him know. Neighbourhood Plan - No update received. Grass Cutting: - The Clerk reported that she had requested tenders for the grass cutting from 3 contractors, as the present contract was coming to an end this year. Tenders to be back to the Clerk by 3
rd February.
Finance: - The Council approved payment of presented invoices. The Bank reconciliation and cashflow was presented to the Council. Churchyard/Cemetery: - There is a lot of ivy on the cemetery hut which needs taking off. It was decided to organize a work party for the 8
th Feb
2020., 9am-12 mid-day. Flyers would be posted in the village and on the Facebook page and notice boards. Casual Vacancy: - A resident had expressed an interest in the Casual Vacancy and attended the meeting. He confirmed to the Council that he wished to be on the Council. Communication: - Facebook seems to be working. Cllr. Fraser wanted a specific topic that would be of interest to residents that could be advertised 2 weeks before the meeting to encourage people to attend. Next meeting could be Anglian Water? Tempsford Times: The Chairman wanted to mention that the Tempsford Times will not be printed by Kier any longer We, therefore, must find another printer which will cost money, as Kier not only printed it but also sponsored it A resident said he could possibly help in this matter. It will all have to be investigated and costed. It was discussed whether a village magazine was actually needed as the Church was producing a Benefice booklet. The Council felt that such a magazine as the Tempsford Times is a good communication tool for the Council and the village to have, and that the Council would underwrite its costs until further sponsorship or increased advertising revenue was forthcoming. ST PETER’S PARISH CHURCH, Church Street, Tempsford Priest in Charge: Rev Graham Buckle The Rectory, Park Lane, Blunham 01767 640412
Roots & Learning! Have you suffered from the severe winds and rain we have just experienced? To my surprise we have had a small tree in the Rectory garden uprooted by the wind. In fact as I write the tree surgeons have just arrived to remove it! They remarked how surprising it is that what appeared to be a healthy young tree has succumbed to the wind, while bigger and more susceptible trees have survived. The tree that has suffered has been completely uprooted, there is not a lot left in the ground! It’s amazing that the wind is so powerful, and can bring down trees, powerlines, lift roofs from buildings and do so much damage. It is a phenomenon we cannot see, but feel and see the effects. Roots are the main reason for trees remaining upright, their depth not only gives them their stability, but they are the channels that feed them too. The same can be said about the Christian faith, we need to have our roots deep in faith and it is through these roots that we are fed and nurtured to sustain us and keep us going. The roots of a disciple are in Jesus Christ, his teaching and his example. In essence what we read in the Gospels is the example Jesus gave us during his earthly ministry. The way he travelled around the Holy Land, telling parables, performing miracles, and speaking with authority and wisdom. It is the continual feeding on these teachings that enables to grow and be nurtured in the Christian faith. Learning more and more from Jesus, understanding his ways and following where he leads us. A group of us from the Benefice have been on a conference learning about bringing new people into the church and it has given us a few new ideas, so look out for some different events over the coming
www.tempsford.org 9
months! In the meantime if you want to find out more about the Christian, please contact me, my details are in this magazine. Most of you will know that we have been working towards a Benefice magazine. The magazine will inform you all about what is going on in the four parishes of our Benefice. We printed our new magazine – The Riversmeet Recorder – for the first time as a trial for the December—January issue. Hopefully we have got rid of all of the little bugs, and The Riversmeet Recorder will be produced for the April edition onwards. This means that this is the last issue of the Bridge (for Great Barford and Roxton) and News and Views (for Blunham and Tempsford). The new magazine will be free to every household, so you should be receiving a copy through your door. With God’s blessing, Rev. Graham

STUART MEMORIAL HALL
Last time, I reported progress on the Stuart Memorial Hall Centenary Project and that our estimate of the total costs to complete the project would be around £90000. We have secured £53500 of this via the National Lottery People’s Project and the Gale Family Charity Trust so there is still a long way to go. Unfortunately, the failure of our boiler and the cost of £5500 to replace it has caused us to pare back a little on some of the other work we had planned to do. Notwithstanding the above, work has started and the roof of the Hall has been repaired and the installation of the new boiler has been completed so we are now watertight and we have heat. Decoration of the Hall has started and in the coming few weeks we plan to do the Main Hall, Committee Room and the toilets. We don’t have enough funding to do the kitchen or the exterior at the present stage but we will be applying for additional grant income over the next few months.
There are several events planned for the Hall in the next year or so:
• There will be a Summer Barbecue on Saturday 13
th June and we are planning some great
entertainment for that. • Last year’s Quiz Night was a big success and we
are going to repeat that this year in November. • We are also planning to re-introduce our Burn’s
Night celebration on Saturday, January 30th 2021.
Please watch out for further announcements and ticketing arrangements for these events on our website and Facebook page. Of course, the major fundraiser for the Hall each year is the Tempsford Show. This year, the show will be on Saturday 5th September so please put the date in your diary. Most of you will know that Kier Group

is leaving its HQ at Tempsford Hall and we are therefore likely to be losing our main sponsor for the show. If there is an organisation out there which would like to be our major sponsor and to have their logo on the front of all of our literature, please get in touch. Again, watch out for further announcements on the show via the Tempsford Times, our website and our Facebook page. The Hall AGM this year will be held at the Stuart Memorial Hall on Wednesday 15th April. A notice on this appears elsewhere in this Tempsford Times. If you are interested in contributing to village life and would like to become a Trustee on the Hall Committee or be a co-optee (we are allowed two co-optees), please get in touch. We began the year 2020 by trying to put to bed the devasting result we received at Potton in our last game of 2019. Despite leading throughout the match, we eventually succumbed to a disappointing 3-3 draw against Bromham United with two goals coming from Owen Meeds, and another from Jack Armiger. The following week however, a spirited 0-2 defeat away at league leaders Riverlite gave us many reasons to be cheerful as we competed well and were unlucky not to get at least a draw. We built on this renewed confidence in our next game, which was a home friendly vs Hawkins, and we triumphed to an outstanding 5-0 win. Despite being on a high, our standards slipped during our next match vs Denhaps Raptors and we found ourselves four nil down after the first 45 mins of play. Such is our never-say-die attitude though, we fought back in the second half only to lose 6-3 in the end.
We now have 5 league matches remaining, plus a semi-final cup game at the beginning of March. We hope to see as many of you can at our matches.

On 30 January 2020 the Secretary of State for Transport, the Rt. Hon. Grant Shapps MP, announced the preferred route option for East West Rail, between Bedford and Cambridge.
The Preferred Route Option links existing stations in Bedford and Cambridge with communities in Cambourne and the area north of Sandy, south of St. Neots, and was chosen following detailed analysis over several months. This route was known as Route E in our 2019 consultation - would represent the best value for taxpayers, returning the most benefit for every pound spent - was the most popular option with people who responded to our 2019 consultation -would deliver the best opportunities for supporting and enhancing the environment - A new station for the growing population at Cambourne - A new station in the area around Sandy and St Neots connecting with services to towns including Edinburgh, Peterborough and Doncaster - Easy access to Bedford town centre, supporting plans to regenerate the town and enabling connections to communities across the Midlands - Simple access to Cambridge city centre, and connections onto communities across Anglia and Norfolk At present, we are still working to develop the precise alignment that the railway would take within the Preferred Route Option. Crucially, before the Route Alignment is chosen, there will be more opportunities for you to comment on the plans and we will continue to use feedback from communities as part of our decision-making process throughout the life of the project.

• Over the coming months, we will be holding events in
communities across the Preferred Route Option, so you can meet the team and talk to us about the next steps.
• We will also begin environmental surveys in the area around the Preferred Route Option, to help us create the right alignment, and from February onward will be contacting local landowners to arrange access for these surveys.
• Later in the year, we will launch a community hub on our website, to provide more ways for you to talk to the team and access information.
