Hi Everyone,
MRS FOWLER ON LEAVE Mrs Rebecca Fowler will be beginning her maternity leave at the start of Term 4, 2018. The Level 4
students and staff members are indebted to Mrs Fowler for her outstanding teaching in 6F and leadership, as the Level Coordinator over the past [5] years. Her classroom is a delight to visit – always colourful, well organized and with lots of student work on display. Mrs Fowler has been a model teacher of Liter-acy and Numeracy. This has been invaluable for other members of staff in their professional development. In 2017, Mrs Fowler received a Rising Star Award from “The Educator” magazine. Below is the article that featured in their mag-azine; As one of [30] young achievers selected each year Australia wide, Mrs Fowler has been recognized for her outstanding leadership of Level 4 over the past [4] years. During that time she has overseen the development of teaching & learn-
ing with changes from AusVELS to the Victorian Curriculum. She has ensured that the curriculum is differentiated to each student’s ability level and models this in her classroom. Mrs Fowler has been tireless in her work with student welfare and engagement. Student leadership, Grade 6 Graduation, Responsibility Day, Level 4 sport, camp and ‘Big Friends, Little Friends’ are just some of the initiatives that Mrs Fowler puts in place each year. One of her key innovations has been to establish “Sweet Valley High”, which involves turning the school into a secondary college for a week for Year 5 & 6 students. This program has been highly suc-cessful in preparing students for their transition to secondary education. I know that the Templestowe Valley Primary School community will join with me in congratulating Mrs Fowler on this significant achievement! We extend our best wishes to Mrs Fowler and her husband Mark as they eagerly await the arrival of their baby in early November. RESPONSIBILITY DAY The Grade 6 students took part in ‘Responsibility Day’ last Wednesday week when they became the classroom teachers. On this special occasion, each of the TVPS teachers was replaced by one, two or even three Grade 6 students who took control of the class [with the teacher being present]. The students taught
the normal curriculum – literacy and maths – as well as did yard duty! They had their recess and lunch breaks in the mini-staffroom that was set up for their purposes. Two students, Hamish C and Giancarlo R, nominated to be Principals for the day. The follow-ing is their report; Hamish writes - “Responsibility day is a very special day for all the Grade 6 stu-dents because they get to take over the roles of teachers and
staff. We had 2 weeks to write an application for a certain role in the school from Prep to Grade 5 or you could apply for a specialist or Principal or Assistant Principal. If you were a classroom teacher, you had to design and create a lesson plan and teach it to the grade. However, I was Principal so I was re-sponsible for conducting the assembly and arranging staff meeting agendas.
During Responsibility Day, I was working on this report, playing with the kinder kids from next door and helping Mr Renshaw with some jobs. Today I got dressed up to be a very smart looking and neat Princi-pal, my mum is to thank for my amazing costume.
Responsibility Day was really fun and it forced me to take a big step outside of my comfort zone. I never knew that running assembly was not that scary or nerve-racking. After being Principal, I think that I have grown as a person. I also know that my other peers had lots of fun giving out work and correcting it today. I just think that Responsibility Day is an important event that I definitely want to remember”.
Special thanks to Mrs Fowler, Mr Lewis and Mrs Broome for mentoring and guiding the students in their work!

All students are required to wear their hats in Term 4. It is also a good idea to apply sunscreen to your child as part of the morning routine. Students will have an opportunity to ‘top up’ on sunscreen later in the day.

Continuing from page 1 STUDENTS STAR IN MARTIAL ARTS Micah R [6F], Lewis R [2BD] and Zoltan J [3M] all competed in the State Championships for International Sport Karate Association – ISKA – last weekend. The boys proudly showed off their medals at Assembly on Monday morning. Micah produced a PB and Zoltan and Lewis came equal first in their age group for ‘extreme Forms’. All three boys are competing in Sydney in November for the Australian Titles. SWIMMING LESSONS The swimming lessons for Foundation to Grade 6 at the Aquarena Pool, Doncaster concluded this week. The lessons featured swimming and survival techniques. The swimming program extended over two weeks – 9 sessions in total. Special thanks to Mr Eagleton for arranging the swimming program and to the parents who have volunteered at the pool. ‘BOGAN’ TRIVIA NIGHT A special note of thanks to all the TVPS families that attended the ‘Bogan Trivia Night’, held in the Multi-purpose Hall at TVPS last Saturday week. Arranged by Melinda Minuzzo, together with Simone Warrell & Eva Wong on behalf of the Parents & Friends committee, it was an evening full of fun, challenge, frivolity and high spirits! The participants were challenged with a bevy of questions [sport, history, film & me-dia] from George the Quizmaster and were amused with a number of “extra-curricular” activities, including karaoke!! The costumes worn, including mullets, moccasins and flannelette shirts looked amazing! It was a wonderful opportunity to mix ’n mingle and to make new ac-quaintances! Congratulations to the Parents and Friends committee for an outstanding effort in organizing the night. A healthy profit result-ed from the door entry and silent auction prizes. The funds raised will go towards student resources. Thank-you Melinda and the P&F – the Trivia Night was one of the great occasions and fundraisers for TVPS. GRADE TWO TEACHER PORTRAITS Our F-2 Art Teacher, Mrs St Clair writes;
“For the past few weeks the Grade Two students in Art have been focusing on portrait drawing using a variety of techniques such as pastel,
texta, collage and transparencies to discover the placement of the main facial features. The unit has culminated in each student drawing a
teacher at our school. These fantastic artworks are now on display at the entrance to Block A and outside the Art room door. Please have a
look at their efforts”.
Congratulations to Mrs St Clair for this wonderful initiative!
FAMILIES LEAVING IN 2018 Any families with children in Foundation to Grade 5 that are leaving the school at the end of 2018, are asked to please notify the Office, in writing, as soon as possible. This will assist in planning the Grades at TVPS for next year and also help the departing students with the transi-tion into their new schools – thank-you! EARLY FINISH The TVPS families are advised that school finishes at 2:30pm on Friday, September 21st, prior to the Term 3 school vacation. There will be an assembly in the Hall at 2:10pm. I hope that all families have a restful and enjoyable holiday break whether it is at home, in a warmer climate or on the snowfields! We look forward to seeing all the students when they return at 9am on Monday, October 8 th for Term 4. Bye for now,
Graeme Renshaw
