I Was Just Thinking...I Was Just Thinking...I Was Just Thinking...I Was Just Thinking... Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights, celebrates the rededication of the Temple after its ritual defilement by the Greco-Syrians, and the successful resistance of the Jews to assimilation. The holiday bolsters a sense of national pride in our unbroken heritage, as well as gratitude for miracles reflected in the story of the single cruse of oil which lasted for eight full days.

Embedded in the historical and national meanings of the holiday, one may uncover deep universal a n d p e r s o n a l s ig n i f i c a nc e . The Temple in Jerusalem represented God’s dwelling with and among the Jewish people – but Jewish tradition teaches that o u r b o d i e s a r e “temples,” each one an image of God, housing the spirit of God. Hanukkah offers us an opportunity to recognize the sacredness of our bodies, to offer thanks for the miracles of our bodily functions, and rededicate our physical selves to the service of God and humankind.

Hanukkah comes at a dark time in the calendar, close to the winter solstice with its shortest day and longest night. And, at a point in the month when the moon is obscured, it is literally the darkest time of the year. Our response is to light candles in an effort to draw light into the world and appreciate even the humblest, most limited light with a blessing.

In the Jewish tradition, we are urged to be mindful of all those who are ill, and pray for and with them. Even if we, ourselves, and those near and dear to us are fortunate not to be suffering, we pray daily for physical cure and spiritual healing for those whom we do not know. And how

appropriate it is, that as we bring light into the world with the Festival of Lights, that we do all that we can, in the spirit of Tikkun Olam, Repairing the World, to bring a measure of light to those in need. Thus, before we light a candle on each night, as we exchange gifts with our loved ones

and friends, perhaps we can also offer a prayer to those in need – truly the most powerful gift we can give. I would like to thank Rabbi Simcha Weintraub for these suggestions.

Rabbi Andrew M. Paley [email protected]

“In the Jewish tradition, we are urged to be mindful of all

those who are ill, and pray for and with them. Even if we,

ourselves, and those near and dear to us are fortunate not

to be suffering, we pray daily for physical cure and

spiritual healing for those whom we do not know. And how

appropriate it is, that as we bring light into the world with

the Festival of Lights, that we do all that we can, in the

spirit of Tikkun Olam, Repairing the World, to bring a

measure of light to those in need.”

Before lighting the candles, begin each night with the following: “Adonai, Source of healing and hope, we dedicate this night of Hanukkah to those who (complete with appropriate

line below.) Give them and those who care for them rich blessings of strength and support, solace and determination. Illuminate their lives with insight and guidance, and shine peace and serenity on their path.”

The first night of Hanukkah …are experiencing pain or symptoms

Adonai is my Light and my Salvation – whom shall I fear? Adonai is the Strength of my life – who can make me afraid? (Psalms 27:1)

The second night of Hanukkah …are moving through tests and evaluations It is You who lights my candle, Adonai, my God, illumines the darkness. (Psalms 18:29)

The third night of Hanukkah …are receiving diagnosis Leave your ways to Adonai, Trust in Adonai, who will do it. Adonai will cause you your vindication to shine forth like the

light, the justice of your case like noonday sun. (Psalms 37)

The fourth night of Hanukkah …are receiving treatments Send forth Your light and Your truth – They will lead me; They will bring me to Your holy mountain, To Your dwelling

place. (Psalms 43:3)

The fifth night of Hanukkah …are undergoing surgery With You is the source of life; In Your light do we see light. (Psalms 36:10)

The sixth night of Hanukkah …are recovering from surgery and/or treatments For You have saved me from death. O yes, my foot from stumbling, That I may walk in the presence of God, In the light

of life. (Psalms 56:14)

The seventh night of Hanukkah …are stepping into the next phase of life A lamp unto my feet is Your word, A light for my path. (Psalms 119:105)

The eighth night of Hanukkah …are surviving and incorporating the illness into their lives Light is sown for the righteous, Radiant joy for the upright-at-heart O you righteous ones, rejoice in Adonai, And offer

thanks to Adonai’s holy name! (Psalms 97:11-12)

May this be a Festival of Lights for you and those you love. May God’s light shine in your hearts and in the hearts of all of us, providing wholeness, completeness and shalom.

Talking to Our Children about God

God – there’s that word again. Once you say that word out loud, you are in deep trouble. The word might be the same for everyone but it means something completely different to each person. Yet, if God is so central to Judaism, why do so many of us avoid talking about God? I can tell you – there is one group within our community that you all know that does wonder about God, talk about God, think about God all the time, and that’s our kids. But many of us are uncomfortable when it comes to talking about God. And “uncomfortable” might be putting it mildly. I'd like to share six assumptions that I make about God. Then I want to share with you some resources on talking to our children about God. Six assumptions I make about God:

1. Everybody thinks about God - especially young people. 2. No one knows what God is or isn't. No one knows, not Pat Robertson, not the most ultra-orthodox rabbi - no one. 3. There is no one authoritative, universally accepted Jewish concept of God. If you don't believe me, go to the

prayerbook, go to the Avot, where it says "God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.” Now it would have saved considerable money and paper and typesetting costs if it said the same thing in Hebrew, but it doesn't. It says, Elohei Avraham, Elohei Yitzchak, V'elohei Ya'akov. God of Abraham, God of Isaac and God of Jacob. From which the rabbis derived that every one of our patriarchs and matriarchs experienced God, believed in one God, but experienced God in different ways. And I would suggest to you that what was valid to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob is valid for modern Jews today.

4. Respected Jewish thinkers have had many different ways of writing and speaking about God. 5. About the only things that Jews who do believe in God agree upon is that God is one and God is invisible.

Everything else is up for grabs. 6. Our ideas about God change as we grow older and mature. The God of a 5-year-old is almost never the God of

a person 40, 50, 60, etc.

Here are just a couple of metaphors I think are useful in talking to young children about God. • God is the wise leader who has arranged the world so that everything we need is here. • We need air to breathe and water to drink. We need for chairs to stay on the ground and for the sun to stay in its

place. We need love, and there is love in the world. We need food, and there is enough food for everyone.

One five-year-old asked me how we know that God is a wise leader. I replied with a question (after all, I am a rabbi): What does your classroom look like on a Friday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. before clean-up? What does it look like at 3:00 p.m. after clean-up? What does it look like on Monday morning at 9:00 a.m.? The children quickly pointed out that on Monday morning, the room is clean and everything is in order. I asked how this happens to be. They answered that people come to clean up the room. How did they know that? I asked. They answered that we could tell that people had come to clean up the room because the room was now clean and orderly. I agreed and pointed out that, even though we are not around when the people come to clean the room, we know that they have been here because we can see the results. I then asked them to think of ways in which the world provides us with the things we cannot make for ourselves. They were able to provide several such examples. We then thought of other things that we cannot see or touch, but that we know to be real. We then made the inference to God - whom we cannot see or touch, but whose work we can see around us.

Children seem to agree that God must be a wise leader, because we are given much as a gift in life, including the gift of life itself.

A second way is to present God as the friend who never gives up on you. It will happen from time to time that a child might experience a sense of isolation. It can be very comforting to know that God never gives up on anyone, is always available to listen when we need to speak. God hears, listens, pays attention, and understands. I find this metaphor to be reassuring and powerful.

One of the ways we can do theology with the young is by thinking about how the world works. Shirley Newman, one of the leading authorities on teaching Judaism to young children, calls this "discovering God's secrets." The following lesson plan exemplifies this approach:

The teacher suggests that the children conduct a scientific experiment. They will gather leaves that are exactly the same - in size, shape, texture, and color. The children examine the leaves and conclude that none of the leaves is identical to another. The teacher then passes around brand new postage stamps or coins. The children examine them and conclude that the stamps or coins are identical.

The teacher says, "Today we have discovered one of God's secrets. How are leaves made? How are postage stamps made? When people make something on a machine, they can make things that are exactly the same, identical. When something is natural (made by God), it is always unique. Why do you think that God did that?”

This is an open-ended question. I saw one child reply, "If we all looked the same, it would be boring." Another said, "If we all looked the same, my mommy wouldn't know me!" Uniqueness can be a source of legitimate self-esteem.

I am convinced that young children can engage in deep discussions. They have ideas about God and are happy to share them with an adult who respects them and listens.

Friends, we need to root kids in Jewish theology and let our kids know that they have options. There is not just one way to think of God. And THAT is Jewish!

And Now For Someone Completely Different!

Dan Nichols, Jewish Rock Star

is Temple Shalom’s 2011 Composer-in-Residence

In the past, Temple Shalom has sponsored events that featured rabbinic lecturers and Jewish

music professors: for instance Dr. Jack Gottlieb, now 80, was here in 2003 for a weekend that

highlighted his liturgical music and new book, “Funny, It Doesn’t Sound Jewish.” But, this year, we

are excited to present someone completely different -- Temple Shalom’s Composer-in-Residence

for 2011: Dan Nichols, a contemporary Jewish Composer whose music is sung in synagogues and

at Jewish summer camps all over North America. Why is Dan different? His music appeals to the kid in all of us. Here is a

great opportunity to meet and experience this gifted composer who inspires and excites people all over the United States

and Canada. Mr. Nichols, who lives in Raleigh, North Carolina, with his wife Elysha and daughter Ava, received his

Bachelor of Music Degree from the University of North Carolina in 1992. He has worked tirelessly to fuse his classical

training with his enthusiasm for Jewish communal singing. This passion exists because he is a product of URJ camping,

having grown up at Goldman Union Camp Institute in Zionsville, Indiana.

Don’t be shy! Come and experience the music and exhilaration created by this exceptional performer February 4th-6th.

Be sure to bring your children, your grandchildren, their friends and yours. I promise you won’t be disappointed. Check the

information on page 7 of this issue for all that Dan will be bringing to the Metroplex, and… it’s all free!

Might you be interested in

a regular Family Learning Opportunity?

We are exploring the possibility of creating a Family School – Beit Sefer Mishpachah, at Temple Shalom. Although we are very much in the preliminary stages, this would be a monthly (most likely) Jewish learning opportunity for the entire family to do together IN PLACE OF Sunday Religious School classes or Wednesday Next Dor classes.

The program would include activities to do together as a family, as a community, and as parallel learning – kids alone and parents alone. In order to make this happen, we need 12 families who are interested in this unique learning experience.

We will have an informational meeting about this exciting possibility on Sunday, January 9 at 9:30am. (If you are in the Melton Class, please let me know of your interest and I will include you in the planning.)

For questions or to RSVP, please email Debbie at [email protected].

Teens looking for a summer internship?

Jewish Family Service is gearing up for the 2011 Summer Internship Program for High School students. A select group of high school students of all faiths will be given the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to the Dallas community while gaining valuable life experience and possibly earning a generous stipend.

This Klein Summer Internship program places high school students with a non-profit agency in the DFW area whose mission and client population matches the interest of the student for a six-week internship beginning June 13 through the end of July. There is a competitive screening process which includes an in-depth application, interviews, references and criminal background checks. There will be both paid and unpaid interns. All applicants must currently be sophomores or juniors and must be at least sixteen years of age by September 1, 2011. Beginning December 1st, the application will be available through the JFS website: www.JFSdallas.org - in the Volunteer section students can click on the Klein Summer Internship program to learn more about the program and download the application. Or, students can contact Janine Pulman directly by email, [email protected].

All student applications will be due in mid January, 2011.There will be an information session for more information and to meet some of last year’s interns on Thursday, January 6, from 6:30 to 8:30pm at Jewish Family Service, located at 5402 Arapaho Road, Dallas. Contact Janine Pulman, Director of Volunteer Services at Jewish Family Service with any questions at 972-437-9950.

Don’t let your soda tabs go to waste!

The SHFTY board needs your help by collecting pull tabs (those metal things on the tops of soda cans) for the nonprofit organization Pull Tabs for Charity. Half the proceeds from the pull tabs will go to the National Cancer Institute and half to the Ronald McDonald House. All you need to do is bring in the metal tabs from the top of your soda cans and place them in the jar in the Youth Programs office, or even just find Barrett or a SHFTY board member and we’ll get them to the right place. Happy collecting!

Brotherhood vs SHFTY

Wiffle Ball Game

On Sunday, November 14, SHFTY and Brother-hood faced off in their third annual indoor Wiffle Ball tournament. Brotherhood treated the youth to a deli-cious baseball themed lunch and a great game. Unfortunately, the previous undefeated SHFTY team lost to Brotherhood by a score of 16-10. Many thanks go out to the men of Brotherhood who joined us for the game and for all of their support of the youth!

Join a Havurah Today and Make Friends That Will Last a Lifetime.

Celebrate, Socialize, Learn Together The word Havurah is Hebrew for fellowship. Individual

Havurot are small groups that have similar goals, with Judaism as the binding thread.

New groups are being formed at Temple and we would love to add you to the mix. Each group determines for themselves what their emphasis will be and how often they will meet. Whether it is social, study-oriented, or community service, the choice is up to you.

No matter what you choose, a Havurah is a great way to meet new temple members and form lasting friendships, which will ultimately add something to each of our Jewish lives.

Remember the Temple in Your Will

Temple Shalom is committed to preserving the future of our congregation for generations to come. Bequests of all sizes are important resources for the Temple, and we encourage you to be a link to the future by remembering the Temple in your will. Your lasting tribute is your commitment to the survival of our religion, our Temple, and our people.

A bequest can easily be established by adding a simple codicil to your will. Additionally, many other options exist to leave a legacy for Temple Shalom. A brochure with more information is available in our main foyer, or by contacting the administrative offices. For more information, please contact our Executive Director Steve Lewis at 972-661-1810 ext.202.

Your planned gift will serve the future of our congregation and community. Thank you for helping assure the strength and health of Temple Shalom for generations to come.

Our mission is to inspire in you a relationship with God, Torah and the Jewish people. Do you know someone we should invite to Temple, someone who is new to Dallas or is not connected to a congregation?

Please contact Executive Director Steve Lewis so we can show them that Temple Shalom is their place.
