Dear Friends,
I write in the intense days
between Rosh Hashanah and
Yom Kippur. We had a very
nice beginning of our fall
holiday season, on which we
hope to build. This is my
tenth season on the pulpit,
and I’m humbled and hon-
ored to have been able to
share my ideas and dreams,
accomplishments and disap-
pointments, with the very special people of our con-
gregation. In the spirit of the season, I wish to
acknowledge that I fall short at times of what I ex-
pect from myself, and surely of what you expect
from me, and for that I am sorry. I will endeavor to
bring my very best to serving the community in the
coming year.

When the Bulletin comes out it will be
time for Sukkot, and I hope you consider
joining us for our “Open Sukkah.”
Rabbi Bill Siemers
Below are some remarks on Sukkot that I
wrote for last year’s newsletter. I still like
them. Wishing everyone a good year,
One of the important movies of the eighties
that I never got around to watching was
Field of Dreams. I didn’t see how it could
be better than Bull Durham. But in any
case, the catch-phrase of the movie “If you
build it they will come,” has always re-
minded me of Sukkot. (Wikipedia points
out that the catch-phrase is a misquote of
“If you build it, he will come,” but, as I
said, I never saw the movie). I don’t be-
lieve in magic, but building the Sukkah
(Rabbi—continued from page 1)
each year is probably as close as I get to
a mystical experience. There is some-
thing in the air at this time of year which
is just wonder, and the sound of the trees
in the cool evening air is a time of spe-
cial closeness to Creation and to its Cre-
ator. Kabbalists begin each evening of
the festival with the ritual greeting of
supernal guests, so for them, “If you
build it they will come” has its own
meaning. But for me, the presence of
flesh-and-blood family and friends in
the Sukkah is the very heart of the holi-
day, and the climax of our festival sea-
son. The presence of God in the Sukkah
is found when Jews draw together to end
the year under the stars. I hope you will
join us, and consider building a Sukkah
if it is a possibility. If you build it, we
will come.

Hush By Eishes Chayil
Come join the Temple Israel book group! Call Cynthia Schulman at 631-727-3568
for further information.
Inside the closed community of Borough Park, where most Chassidim live, the
rules of life are very clear, determined by an ancient script written thousands of
years before down to the last detail- and abuse has never been a part of it. But
when13-year-old Gittel learns of the abuse her best friend has suffered at the
hands of her own family member, the adults in her community try to persuade Git-
tel, and themselves, that nothing happened. Forced to remain silent, Gittel begins
to question everything she was raised to believe.
A richly detailed and nuanced book, one of both humor and depth, understanding
and horror, this story explains a complex world that remains an echo of its past,
and illuminates the conflict between yesterday's traditions and today's reality.
About the author
Eishes Chayil is a pseudonym for a descendant of some of the main founders and
leaders of Chassidut in nineteenth- and twentieth-century Poland. She was raised
in a world of Chassidic schools, synagogues, and summer camps. She works as a
journalist for two international orthodox papers located in Brooklyn, New York.

Our Judaica Shop If you need Shabbat or holiday items for yourself or for a gift, you will find them right in the
Temple. Our Judaica Shop boasts a large inventory of beautiful items, many of them dis-
played in the Social Hall's glass cases. Kiddush cups, glass platters, Shabbat-To-Go, kipot,
Seder and matzoh plates, menorahs, children's books and toys, cookbooks, and candlesticks
are all there.

Leaves on the Tree of Life
An engraved leaf on the lovely Tree of
Life which graces our Social Hall is a
joyous reminder of a Bat or Bar Mitz-
vah, an anniversary, a wedding, or a
special birthday, and also a fitting trib-
ute to the memory of a loved one. The
cost of a leaf is $180. For further infor-
mation, please contact Phyllis
VanDyne at 734-7511.
Kosher Food For Our Events
Beach Bakery in Westhampton Beach is a kosher, dairy bakery all
year, except during the summer, when pareve items are offered, al-
so.
Bagel Patch, in Patchogue, frequently provides the food for our spe-
cial events. The Best Yet Market on Route 58 carries pareve cookies
and cakes. BJ’s and Costco also have pareve cookies in their baker-
ies, and the Riverhead Waldbaum’s bakery is kosher.

or to convey sympathy and support.
Wishes are inscribed each month in the
