BROAD AND BEYOND
Advertising supplement to Philadelphia Business Journal April 27, 2012
For more than 120 years, Temple Health has been providing advanced care to the Philadelphia
region, while leading in the discovery of new and better medical treatments. Today, Temple Health’s
physician leadership is building on its rich history, and transforming one of Philadelphia’s leading
academic medical centers into a nationally renowned, top-tier medical institution.
In just the last year, world-recognized clinicians, researchers, academicians and administrators
have joined the organization in key leadership positions. We have launched advanced clinical
endeavors such as our Robotic Surgery Program. Our School of Medicine has opened a strong
regional campus at St. Luke’s Hospital & Health Network in Bethlehem. We’ve expanded our clinical
sites to include a new outpatient offi ce in Oaks, PA and one soon to open in Fort Washington. And
we’ve enhanced the care on our Broad Street campus with investments like that in the new
patient-focused Ambulatory Surgery Center.
With our new programs, research and faculty, this is one of the most dynamic periods in
Temple Health’s history.
This supplement to the Philadelphia Business Journal Corporate Philanthropy
issue was produced by Temple University Hospital in recognition of the 67 years
of devoted services and generosity of the Temple University Hospital Auxiliary.

Larry R. Kaiser, MD, FACSSenior Executive Vice President for Health Sciences, Temple UniversityDean & Professor of Surgery, Temple University School of MedicinePresident & Chief Executive Offi cer, Temple University Health System
There is a palpable sense of enthusiasm and excitement here. We’ve recruited renowned
physicians from around the country who have enhanced Temple’s capacity to expand its
mission well beyond our traditional boundaries.“
”
Before you can offer world-class clinical care, you need to invest in world-class clinicians and
the most advanced technology available. And right now in the Philadelphia region, Temple Health
is doing just that.
Merging high-end technology like the da Vinci® Surgical System, with our renowned robotic
surgeons, Temple Health can now offer the least invasive options for patients needing treatment
in cardiology, gynecology, ENT and urology.
DEVELOPING ALTERNATIVES TO MANY INVASIVE SURGERIES
Daniel D. Eun, MDVice Chief of Robotic SurgeryDirector of Minimally Invasive Robotic Urologic Oncology & Reconstruction, Temple University HospitalAssociate Professor of Clinical Urology, Temple University School of Medicine
Minimally invasive and robotic surgery is revolutionizing patient care. Already we can offer many
patients the full treatment benefi ts of surgery with far smaller incisions, less tissue damage and faster
recovery time. At Temple, we’re developing innovative robotic procedures that improve treatment for
a broader group of patients.

The goal of translational medicine is to achieve new breakthrough discoveries in the lab and bring
them to patients’ bedsides faster. Right now Temple has an incredible influx of new people, new
ideas and new energy which makes it a great place for this groundbreaking work to take place.“

The future of medicine is the individualization of care. Meaning we wish to identify genetic and epigenetic
factors that contribute to different diseases in different people, and customize therapies to treat them.“”Jean-Pierre Issa, MD
Professor of MedicineDirector of the Fels Institute for Cancer Research and Molecular Biology,Temple University School of Medicine
Today, Temple researchers are advancing new therapies for the most widespread and deadly diseases.
Temple’s new Center for Translational Medicine is actively pushing the boundaries of science
and converting laboratory breakthroughs into effective new therapies and treatments in much
less time than ever before, giving new hope to patients with few other options. Temple’s Fels Institute
for Cancer Research and Molecular Biology is pioneering the fi eld of personalized medicine
through its work in epigenetics and discovering new ways to prevent and cure disease.
With the planned addition of Fox Chase Cancer Center, one of the most respected
cancer centers in the country, Temple Health is poised to create synergies in
research resulting in new life-saving cancer treatments.
TURNING MEDICAL RESEARCH INTO MEDICAL BREAKTHROUGHS
Crystal A. Gadegbeku, MD, FAHASection Chief of Nephrology, Hypertension and Kidney Transplantation, Temple University HospitalAssociate Professor of Medicine, Temple University School of Medicine
Our goal is to become a role model for keeping diverse communities healthy. We’re also harnessing
the commitment of our faculty and staff to teach and train as we provide the next generation of
physicians with the knowledge and skills they’ll need to effectively treat patients amid the many
emerging changes in healthcare.
“”

Emphasizing a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach, Temple Health faculty are training the
next generation of physicians to meet the challenges in medicine today, while preparing them for
those of the coming years.
By empowering tomorrow’s doctors with the knowledge and experience they need both to treat and to
prevent disease, we’ll improve the health status of generations to come. This is one of the reasons
that Temple Health is becoming a role model for academic medical centers across the country.
CREATING NEW MODELS OF CARE IN AN UNDERSERVED COMMUNITY

Yoshiya Toyoda, MD, PhDVice Chief of Cardiothoracic SurgerySurgical Director of Heart and Lung TransplantationDirector of Mechanical Circulatory Support, Temple University HospitalProfessor of Surgery, Temple University School of Medicine
I came to Temple because I wanted to work with the people here. I feel a strong commitment from
Dr. Kaiser and other leaders at Temple. Everyone has the same goal – cardiologists, pulmonologists,
anesthesiologists, coordinators, nurses – everybody. In addition to offering the highest quality care for
end-stage cardiopulmonary diseases, my goal is to make the Temple Thoracic Transplant Program one
of the best in the world clinically and academically, and to train promising surgeons who can become
future thoracic transplant directors. I made a good decision coming to Temple.”
“”
Temple is attracting clinicians and researchers at the top of their fi elds. One recent example is
Yoshiya Toyoda, MD, PhD. Dr. Toyoda has an outstanding international reputation and before coming
to Temple directed one of the largest and most successful heart and lung transplant programs in the
United States. He has performed more than 450 heart, lung and heart-lung transplants and pioneered
a minimally invasive surgical technique that helps patients to avoid complications. Dr. Toyoda has also
written several book chapters and has published over 300 abstracts and articles in peer-reviewed
publications. In addition, he has mentored over 40 cardiothoracic residents, fellows,
researchers and observers from all over the world.
TRANSFORMING TEMPLE’S PROGRAMS WITH WORLD RENOWNED PHYSICIANS
Amy Goldberg, MD, FACSSection Chief of Trauma and Surgical Critical CareGeneral Surgery Residency Program Director, Temple University HospitalProfessor of Surgery, Temple University School of Medicine
Temple is a tremendous place to work. I’ve been here for 20 years. Our mission, what we do every
day—makes a difference. Our new leadership has made a strong commitment to our mission and to our
growth. The things we’ve been doing forever and the new things we’re doing now, we’re building
something for the next 10, 20, 30 years. Coming to Temple was the best thing that ever happened to me
professionally. I wouldn’t want to work anywhere else.
“”

Temple Health is now in the midst of one of the greatest chapters in its storied 120-year history.
It’s a time of transformation, growth, collaboration, new energy and new vision, which has kindled
much excitement among our physicians, nurses and staff.
With a commitment from our new leadership, we are transforming Temple Health into a leading
academic medical institution. We remain committed to excellence, multidisciplinary clinical care,
research and expansion, all while continuing to provide advanced medical care in our neighborhood
community and beyond.
IT’S A GREAT TIME TO BE A PART OF TEMPLE HEALTH
Kelvin RuffTemple Burn Center Patient
In 2007, I was in a horrible car accident than nearly took my life. I was taken to the Temple Burn Center
with 3rd degree burns over 80% of my body and was placed in a medically induced coma. I went through
pure hell. There were times I wanted to give up but they wouldn’t let me. The doctors, nurses and staff
at the Temple Burn Center are like a second family to me. They helped me with my outer wounds and
my inner wounds. If it wasn’t for them I wouldn’t be here.

Established in 1991 by the Temple University Hospital Auxiliary and presented each year
at the Acres of Diamonds Gala, the Diamond Award honors groups and individuals with
exemplary records of social responsibility to the Temple community. This year we are proud
to honor the amazing professionals of the Temple Burn Center.
Each year the Temple Burn Center responds to the needs of burn patients, many with life-
threatening injuries, from throughout the Delaware Valley and beyond. The Burn Center
is proud to partner with, and is proud to provide life-saving care to fi rst responders and
fi refi ghters from Philadelphia and throughout the region.
Burns can deeply affect a person physically, psychologically, vocationally and socially.
The caring professionals at the Temple Burn Center work tirelessly each day to return
patients as close to their pre-injury status as possible. They are equipped with the most
advanced burn treatment technology in the country, including one of only four lasers
that can revise burn scars previously considered untreatable.
The Temple Burn Center is the only burn center in the region affi liated with an
academic medical center and a level 1 trauma center, ensuring that patients
receive the best care possible.
