Some summers are defined by the weather: day

after day of searing heat, droughts, hurricanes

or tornadoes. This summer will be remembered

for a flood of disturbing headlines from home

and abroad.

The season began with the deadly kidnapping

of three Israeli high school students followed

by the brutal murder of an innocent Arab boy.

This led to a bloody war between Hamas and

Israel, leaving more than 60 Israeli soldiers and

2,000 Palestinians dead, and a very tenuous truce. It continued with

the downing of an airplane and heightened tensions between

Ukrainians and Russians.

In August, American

troops were deployed to

Iraq, a humanitarian effort

to save the lives of

persecuted Yazidis, and

racial strife exploded in

Ferguson, Missouri. Even

in our own backyard there has been drama as we watched the

unfolding of an unprecedented dispute between the workers and

owners of Market Basket.

Whether here or abroad, it feels as if our world is spinning out of

control. It is disheartening to say the least. It makes one wonder if

disorder is the norm, and peace and harmony are just a naive

fantasy.

I generally subscribe to the philosophy of Ecclesiastes (1:9), “The

thing that has been is the thing that shall be; and the thing that is

done is that which shall be done: There is nothing new under the

sun.”

Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur have a particular relevance this

year. Judaism recognizes the human capacity for violence, but urges

us never to despair, never to abandon the pursuit of peace. Our faith

urges us to engage in a quest for a more just society rather than

retreat from the seemingly intractable problems of the world. Ours is

a religion of hope, recognizing the human potential for change and

growth. Wars do end and nations, once bitter rivals, can become

partners. History has shown this to be true.

The High Holy Days is the Jewish version of a homecoming. Not

only do we reconnect to our fellow congregants during these sacred

days, but we also reexamine the Jewish values that can help us find

our place in a very tumultuous world. I find reassurance in the

wisdom of our faith and its understanding that we are imperfect, but

growth and change are possible. No matter how chaotic the world

may be, there is always hope.

I look forward to worshipping with you this year as we consider

some of the bigger questions we face in our own lives and in our

world. I am confident that together we will find inspiration in our

traditional prayers and comfort in the familiar melodies sung by

generations of our people.

I pray that the New Year brings peace to us, to our families and to

our world. Faith and I wish you good health and joy in the year to

come.

Musical Notes

"‘Od tir-e od tir-e kama tov yihye ba-Shanah, ba-Shanah ha-

Ba-ah” “You will see how much better next year will be".

An exciting and promising year is about to start. The year will

create new memories for us, our students and our families. We

will celebrate holidays, life cycle events, new B'nai Mitzvah

and create memories that will last a lifetime. When I think of

what makes my family Jewish, I think about zichronot,

memories. Memories shape our identity and make us the

people we are. We are so fortunate to have such a wonderful

and supportive community. Together we share and create

memories.

As always, we begin the year with a Selichot service and

concert. Cantorial Soloist Laura Berkson will join me for a

concert featuring beautiful liturgical music that prepares us and

sets the tone for the High Holy Days' season. We welcome

back soloist Mark Kagan and our devoted adult choir as well as

our superb professionals. Flutist Amir Milstein, cellist Yael

Rubinstein and the rest of our talented musicians will join

pianist Brian Friedland. Our post B'nai Mitzvah students will

chant from the Torah and our junior choir will appear at the

Neilah service on Yom Kippur!

Our music program is also getting better every year. We have

so many talented musicians in our community: the adult choir,

junior choir, Abbas, Soul Sisters, Sababas band and Jew Jam.

The many special services and other events we offer are what

make our Temple very unique. There will be many

opportunities to create new memories.

We all watch and follow the latest unfortunate situation in

Israel. Let's hope that this year will be a year of blossom, love,

spirituality, friendship, achievement, good health, and most

importantly, a quiet, war-free year. I would like to end with the

words from Isaiah 2:4: "And they shall beat their swords into

plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall

not lift the sword against nation, neither shall they learn war

anymore.” Amen!

L’Shanah Tovah!

Cantor Idan Irelander

Executive Director’s Message The New Year 5775 is upon us. The doors of the sanctuary will

open for everyone to enter for worship and renewal. You will

take your place among us for beautiful services, sacred music,

meaningful prayers and timely messages from our rabbis.

High Holy Day information and tickets have been mailed to all

members in good standing. If you are current on your financial

obligations to Temple Emanuel and did not receive your packet,

it is our oversight. We apologize and want to get your

information and tickets to you right away – please call the

office at 978-470-1356 for assistance.

As we come together, it is our pleasure to welcome you home

for the holidays and to wish you the very best in the New Year.

To you and yours, may the New Year 5775 be a year of

prosperity, health, joy, well-being and peace.

Executive Director

President’s Message

This summer has been hard on me, I am willing to admit.

While fighting waged on in Israel and I watched our extended

Israeli family members endure another round of violence

against their very existence, I also saw social media light up

with a new level of vitriol and menace I had not experienced,

and for which I was not prepared. People I knew well shared

clips and videos and supposed “news” highly critical of Israel.

I found this extremely distressing. This “news” was never

properly cited or supported and too many had no problem

carelessly “sharing” this nonsense as fact and proof. Along

with our mainstream media, they fell victim to the terrorist’s

tactic of creating bloodshed to draw the camera’s attention,

intentionally sacrificing their own in order to sway the court of

western opinion. Because they have used these vile tactics in

the past, I was not surprised by the actions of the terrorists;

however, I was deeply saddened by the reactions of others. I

was shocked by how quickly too many were to blame Israel for

everything. It hurt. And it scared me. I hadn’t felt the sting of

anti-Semitism in several decades. While the loud rhetoric in

Europe was the most overt example, the nasty tone at home

was also clear. I realized that even though we are freer than

ever to worship as we choose, even though we are accepted

into clubs and schools that once shut us out, even though our

“educated” neighbors no longer shun us, we cannot be

complacent. Because so many were so quick to attack the

Jewish state, because I no longer feel that the world will be as

willing to support us, we must remember to support each other,

support our Temple family and of course, support Israel. Our

parents and grandparents understood this. We must not forget. B’seder,

Ellen Keller

Director of Lifelong Learning This Fall, you’ll have opportunities to expand your mind, heart

and friendship circle. We will once again offer an Introduction

to Judaism class. This class is perfect for anyone who would

like to learn more about Judaism, whether Jewish or not. It is

also the first step to conversion for those interested. Mussarr is

the Jewish path to reflective, ethical, everyday living. I am

opening a group that will meet once a month to explore this

Jewish practice. If you are interested in the Intro to Judaism

class or Mussar Group, please email me.

On January 9th–11th, 2015, we’ll hold our first Temple

Emanuel Winter Getaway in North Conway, NH. At this

family-friendly Temple retreat, we’ll welcome Shabbat, build

community and have plenty of time for winter sports, shopping

and spa services at the North Conway Grand Hotel.

Be sure to keep your eye out for the Lifelong Learning

Brochure that highlights the many social, cultural and

education programs offered this year.

I hope everyone had a relaxing and wonderful summer spent

with family and friends. The crisp fall mornings have returned

signaling our back to school and day to day busy routines. As

we move into the Days of Awe, I am pleased to welcome back

all of our Brothers and look forward to new members joining

us this year. We spent the summer planning our year. We have

a wide range of activities planned that should appeal to all men

in our Temple community. If you don’t see something that

interests you, please let me know personally. I would love to

hear from you. My email address is at the bottom of the article.

signature Breakfast series on September 14th. As always, these

free breakfasts are a great opportunity to reconnect with

friends, make new ones and enjoy some bagels and lox with

the Brotherhood.

I am very excited to be working with a hardworking and

committed Brotherhood Board. I also want to personally thank

our President Emeritus, Mitchell Schneir, for all he has done

over these past five years. Mitch’s commitment to the Temple

not only restarted the Brotherhood, but also encouraged many

of us to get involved in leadership roles. Our active board is a

testament to his hard work. We are lucky to have Mitch

working with us and I look forward to his guidance as I take

over as President. I hope to see you soon at one of our events.

HIGH HOLY DAY QUESTION ANSWER:

We encourage men, women and older teenagers to perform this mitzvah. Ushering includes collecting tickets, helping people to their seats, handing out or collecting prayer books and assisting in maintaining order throughout the building during services. This is a great way to get involved at the Temple and start the New Year off with a mitzvah. Contact the office to volunteer.

The Book of Jonah

Saturday, October 4, Yom Kippur Afternoon

AMIR MILSTEIN

In keeping with tradition, a member of our community will reflect on the traditional story of Jonah during the

afternoon of Yom Kippur. Amir Milstein has been our Temple flutist for a number of years. He was raised in

Israel, served in the Israeli army and received most of his musical training in Israel. Amir and his wife live in

Newton where they are raising their two sons. Their oldest graduated high school last year and deferred his college acceptance so that he could serve in the Israeli

army. Amir will share his thoughts on the ever-changing situation in the Middle East.

He will speak at approximately 5:00 pm.

This service is open to the community.

A FEW NOTES ABOUT THIS YEAR’S

HIGH HOLY DAY SERVICES

This year’s High Holy Days begin on Wednesday, September 24th.

This year the Early Rosh Hashanah Service on the first day, and the Early Yom Kippur Service will begin at 9:00

am and end by 11:00 am. This shorter, family-friendly service will have all the liturgical components of the service

with which you are familiar. These early services will be led by Rabbi Miriam Philips, Cantor Idan Irelander,

and Cantorial Soloist Laura Berkson. Rabbi Robert Goldstein will deliver the sermon.

Our early Kol Nidre service on Friday, October 3, will begin at 5:30 pm and will include all the elements of the

traditional Kol Nidre service, but with an ensemble of flute, cello, violin and double bass with participation by our

Cantorial Soloist Laura Berkson and professional choir, under the direction of Cantor Idan Irelander.

We will offer child care (with advance reservation), for those who wish to bring younger children. This service, although somewhat abbreviated, is still an adult service. Because of

its slightly shorter length it is also appropriate for older children who can sit through a 90-minute service.

It will be beautiful, majestic and inspiring. Congregants of all ages are encouraged to attend either the early or late service.

The 8:00 pm service will last approximately two hours with High Holy Day Soloist, Mark Kagan and choir.

Finally, as you know, High Holy Day tickets were mailed out last month to all congregants in good standing.

Please clear up any remaining and outstanding dues and Religious School financial commitments at this time.

Note that those attending the later Kol Nidre service will not be allowed into the parking lot until 7:30 pm,

allowing the early service attendees to safely exit.

Call the Temple Office if you have questions. We look forward to a wonderful High Holy Day season with you.

Refreshments in the Multi-Purpose Room.

A Delicate Matter Every year, following our High Holy Day services, we receive a number of complaints regarding the

“saving of seats”. Although we request that people do not save seats, in recent years the practice has become

widespread and by some accounts, a bit excessive.

Obviously, if a spouse is serving as an usher, or parking the car, it is expected that a seat would be saved. It is terribly unfair, however, for those of our fellow congregants who arrive early, to find entire rows of seats with tallit stretched over them. Aside from the obvious sacrilege of using a tallit for this

purpose, it is not appropriate.

This year, ushers (fellow congregants who are volunteering their time to help our services run more smoothly) will ask you not to save entire

rows of seats. Please respect their request and the feelings of our fellow worshippers.

Thank You…………………..The Ritual Committee

High Holy Day Seating Admission to services for the High Holy Days is limited to ticket holders. To avoid difficult and embarrassing situations, we bring this to the

attention of our congregation so that arrangements may be made in ample time for family guests. Please remember that we ask you to have your tickets visible

and available for the ushers at the main foyer entrance. Please call the Temple Office at 978-470-1356

to purchase tickets for out-of-town guests.

TASHLICH SERVICE Thursday, September 25, 4:30 p.m.

Duck Pond at the corner of Argilla Rd.

For more than six centuries, Jews have gathered by bodies of water to participate in a ceremony on Rosh Hashanah known as Tashlich. Tashlich literally means “you shall cast,” and the ceremony is linked to

the following passage from Micah:

God will take us back in love; God will cover up our iniquities.

You will cast all your sins into the depths of the sea. (Micah 7:19)

During the Middle Ages, our ancestors developed the custom of walking to a body of water on the afternoon

of Rosh Hashanah where, with the recitation of prayers, they would empty their pockets and symbolically cast off their sins from the previous year. Often they would toss crumbs of bread to the fish, whose never-blinking

eyes reminded them of God’s eternal watchfulness.

Join us in a spiritual exercise on Rosh Hashanah at 4:30 p.m. at the Duck Pond on the corner of

Argilla Rd. and Andover St. for a brief Tashlich service.

SUKKOT

Service Thursday, October 9

October 9th begins the holiday of Sukkot. The Sukkah will be erected by the flagpoles in the Mitzvah Garden adjacent to the Temple’s parking lot. We encourage everyone to take some time to visit the Sukkah during the holiday. For parents with children in the Religious School and Preschool, take a few minutes when you are dropping off or picking up your children to venture into the Temple’s Sukkah. It will be fun and interesting for everyone!

Temple Emanuel’s “Tree of Life”

Aitz Chayim He…It is a Tree of

Life to those Who Hold Fast to it!

Each Shabbat morning, with those powerful words from

Proverbs 3:18, the Torah is carefully returned to the sacred

Ark. The metaphor of a tree has long been associated with

the Torah. Our sacred scripture, indeed the entire Jewish

tradition is depicted as a strong and sturdy tree offering

spiritual sustenance and intellectual nourishment to our people.

Congregants who wish to mark joyous occasions, honor worthy

people, or remember loved ones can arrange to have a leaf or

leaves affixed to the beautiful bronze “Tree of Life” on the

Foyer wall, adjacent to the entrance nearest the Temple Offices.

The leaves are available in copper ($180),

silver ($360) and gold ($540). The wording

on the leaves can be from one to four lines.

A leaf on the “Tree of Life” is a worthy and noble honor for the

person who has everything. Knowing that the leaves will remain

on the Temple wall for future generations to see, only adds to

their significance. If you would like to order a leaf (or leaves),

please call the Office (978) 470-1356 for more information.

locked except during special holidays, the Temple

Emanuel Cemetery is always available to visit. If you

wish to visit the cemetery, please feel free to pick up a

leaving the cemetery after your visit.

"Rent an Arrangement" Would you like to perform a mitzvah and have the

bima look beautiful at your child's Bar/Bat Mitzvah?

By renting the floral arrangements, you can bring the joy that

accompanies a child becoming a Bar/Bat Mitzvah into another

family’s life. All proceeds from rentals help pay for the expense of

either a tutor or for a small Kiddush lunch for a family who could not

afford to have their child take part in and celebrate this beautiful life

cycle event. The rental donation for the floral arrangements is $180

for two, or $90 for a single arrangement. To rent the arrangements,

or for any questions, please contact the Temple Office.

We are starting to prepare PHA for our

eleventh year serving those in need. What

can you do to get involved? We are looking

for volunteers to work two hour shifts either

weekly, bi-weekly or monthly. We also need volunteers to drive

the truck and pick up furniture for donors. Any time you can

give we will take! We also need people to organize community

or neighborhood drives to stock our shelves. We will once again

participate in Tewksbury’s Zero Waste Day on September 27th

and need volunteers. Teens can help too and volunteer on

Sundays. We also need help contacting restaurants, hotels,

furniture stores and other establishments which might be willing

to donate their no longer needed household goods, furniture or

appliances to PHA. Please contact me at [email protected] if you

would like to get involved - we would love to have you! As we

take the time to reflect, count our blessings and reach within

ourselves to make our own lives and those around ours more

peaceful and fulfilling, taking concrete action by reaching out to

those in need through PHA can start your year off on that path.

All the best for a happy and healthy New Year.
