Plant adaptations

• The trees grow large leaves to absorb light during the growing season. The bark of deciduous trees is thicker than tropical trees to protect the inner core during hard winters.

• Smaller plants, such as flowers and ferns, grow early in the spring with quick growing leaves.

• The forests exist best in moderate climates that are neither too hot nor too cold and neither too wet nor too dry

Animal adaptations

Because the biome has four distinct seasons, animals spend much of the spring preparing for winter. Squirrels and chipmunks gather nuts and seeds saving them for the winter. Bears, woodchucks and raccoons spend the summer eating as much as possible. This allows them to hibernate. Many birds migrate away from the temperate biome to warmer climates.

3 interesting facts

The largest tree in the world is found here, the tree is 275 feet tall and 95 feet around.

The largest forest in the world is 3.5 million square miles of land covered in trees!

Most hardwood trees are used for firewood, construction, or art. Lots of forests are being cut down for farm land.

What being done

In 2003 a law protected the forest from mining, logging, and drilling.

Conservation of the temperate deciduous forest is necessary yet difficult to do. Many people demand and expect their needs come before and be more important than the forest wildlife and the forests health.
