Good job Miss Carlin, way to go! From the Principal’s desk Last Tuesday was the final session of ‘Drumbeat’. This initiative, coordinated by Mrs Macauley, saw students from Temora High and Temora Public schools working together and developing their drumming skills. They had the chance to share these with a few familiar faces. Mrs Pike, Mrs Watterson and our Mortimer Shield teams enjoyed the fine weather last Wednesday at Bob Aldridge Park. Both teams played well and displayed good sportsmanship. Congratulations to the League Tag girls for winning their division on the day. We wish them luck when they play in the semi-finals on June 25. Last Friday: Anna P, Andrea G, Samuel M and Caleb G represented our school in The NSW Junior Chess League. They all played very well on the day and came second in the ’Rookies’ division. Last Friday was Mrs Harman’s last day until term 4 — we wish her all the best on the birth of her second baby. She will be replaced by Mrs Margo Townsend and Mrs Nicole Crawford, who will share the position. The Multicultural Perspectives Public speaking competition was a great success. All our speakers did a fine job. Special congratulations to Zoe M and Kate H who received Highly Commended certificates. Thanks to Mrs Johnson for her organisation and Mrs Gersbach for catering. This week our debating team will travel to Ariah Park to participate in the next few rounds of the Premier’s Cup whilst our basketball team travel to Young to play in the next round of the knockout. Also best of luck to Dane C, Bailey R, Juatia T, Anna P, Ruby W, Abby M, India K, Sophie B, Zoe McL, Courtney McK, Catie S and Grace O at the Riverina Athletics Carnival next Monday. This Friday we have our 3 prac teachers saying farewell, we wish them all the best in their careers. In particular, Brooke returns to the USA with lots of ideas and new friends. It is great to see parents already attending interviews. Thank you for supporting such an important part of our reporting schedule. Regards Deidre Flakelar Relieving Principal

Premier’s Spelling Bee 2014

Recently we held eliminations for the 2014 Premier’s Spelling Bee. Ten senior students from years 5 and 6 competed and had to spell some very difficult words including:

Abundance; camembert; apostrophe Jack W. successfully spelled level 6 word “abattoir” to qualify to represent our school at the Regional eliminations.

Shania W successfully spelled level 6 word “charisma” to represent our school at the Regional eliminations. In the junior eliminations there were 21 keen year 2, 3 and 4 students who competed in eliminations. These brave year 2 students do not generally represent schools at Regional eliminations however their enthusiasm to participate and compete against Year 3 and 4 students will place them in good stead to be highly competitive next year.

Anna Cleverdon successfully spelled level 3 word “gelato” to qualify to represent TPS at Regional eliminations.

Petrina Williams narrowly out spelled Colby Scott by correctly spelling “glossary”. Spelling Bee word lists will be released at the beginning of Term 3 and all students are welcome to a copy of the list. The Regional finals will be held between 8th September and 19th September at a venue to be confirmed. Congratulations to everyone for an outstanding effort.

WHAT IS FRESH TASTES?

Our school implements the Fresh Tastes @ School NSW Healthy School Canteen Strategy, which means our canteen has guidelines to follow when designing the menu. Fresh Tastes @ School uses a coloured spectrum to categorise food based on nutritional value: GREEN: these foods are a good source of nutrients and contain less saturated fat, sugar, salt and excessive kilojoules so fill the menu with these foods. AMBER: these foods have some nutritional value, moderate levels of saturated fat, added sugar and salt so select these foods carefully, avoid large portion sizes and don’t allow them to dominate the menu. RED: have little to no nutritional value and are high in saturated fat, added sugar, salt and excess kilojoules These foods can only be sold on two occasions per term.
