Card Choices As a result of on-going R&D investments, and full global support for the service provider customers, the Tellabs 1000 MSAP currently offers three distinct Ethernet plug-in cards [Table 1] for 10/100, 1G and 10G connectivity purposes. GbE226 – The Tellabs® 10 Gigabit Ethernet 226

(GbE226) plug-in card provides Four (4) 1Gbps Ethernet ports using small form-factor pluggables (SFP) and Two (2) 1Gbps/10Gbps Ethernet ports using enhanced small form-factor pluggables (SFP+) – for a total of six (6) Ethernet ports with flexible uplink and tributary connectivity.

GbE222 – The Tellabs® Gigabit Ethernet 222 (GbE222)

plug-in card supports packet-based Ethernet connectivity for an uplink to the service provider’s network and interterminal transport. The GbE222 provides two (2) Gigabit Ethernet ports equipped with optional configurations of 1000-Base-SX SFPs, 1000-Base-LX SFP or 1000-base-ZX SFP optics.

ES10/100 – The Tellabs® Ethernet Service 10/100

(ES10/100) plug-in card enables Ethernet service to be delivered directly to subscribers from any shelf. Each ES10/100 provides up to 100 Mbps of bidirectional traffic per port and each card is equipped with two independent ports.

Better Flexibilities These three (3) Tellabs 1000 MSAP Ethernet plug-in cards can be deployed in the iconic 132-Line Channel Bank Assembly (Tellabs 1000 CBA) and the small 48-Line CBA (Tellabs 1048 CBA) with some exceptions. You will find these CBAs deployed at various points in the network, and depending on those network locations, the GbE226, GbE222 and ES10/100 can be utilized to optimize network performance at central office, remote offices/cabinets and business premises.

Central Office –In a central office, both the GbE226 or

GbE222 can be utilized for network uplinks to switch/router ports [Diagram 2]. If aggregation is needed, the 10G GbE226 can be used to aggregate 1Gb Ethernet ports before they hit the expensive switch/router ports. The 10G GbE226 can also be positioned out in the remote offices, and cabinets, to provide fiber pairgain to more efficiently use the outside plant fiber cabling before entering the Central Office.

High Runner Applications The Tellabs 1000 MSAP supports many business and residential applications, such as high-speed residential broadband, IPTV/VoD initiatives, CAFII projects, business services, narrowband services, cell site traffic backhaul, remote cabinet retrofit, 911 redundancy and Class-5 switch migration. For the purposes of this overview, we will focus on the top-3 high runner applications that have the most to benefit from the GbE226, GbE222 and ES10/100 Ethernet cards. FCC’s Connect America Fund Phase II – The Tellabs

1000 MSAP has served high-speed broadband connectivity for decades. The Tellabs 1000 MSAP is the ideal embedded access platform for service providers to cost effectively satisfy the 10 Mbps downstream and 1 Mbps upstream program requirements of the FCC’s CAF Phase II (CAFII). To meet the requirements of CAFII, service providers can enhance performance and maximize transport capacity by installing the GbE222 card into the same shelf as the xDSL service cards. And where a service provider chooses to optimize the outside fiber plant or aggregate gigabit Ethernet ports, they can install the new 10G GbE226 card to transport all the broadband traffic from multiple GbE222 cards.

Network Transformation – Network transformation, and

the migration to IP/Ethernet centric connectivity, can come in the form of Class-5 switch migration, core network transformation, legacy digital loop carrier (DLC) replacement and remote cabinet retrofits. The Tellabs 1000 MSAP replacement of legacy equipment offers economic and efficient operation of a transformed network. Therefore, the best choice to serve this network transformation is the Tellabs 1000 MSAP with its CBA sizes (e.g. Tellabs 1000 CBA, Tellabs 1048 CBA) and 10G GbE226, 1G GbE222 and ES10/100 Ethernet cards options. It is the best choice, because all the migration to IP/Ethernet, and optical, connectivity can be accomplished without sacrificing any legacy copper-based services or forklift upgrades.

Cellular Backhaul – Service providers are often

challenged by the costs associated with ever increasing bandwidth capacity growth at their cell sites. These costs include from network planning, personnel skills, maintenance, to on-going management. Where the Tellabs 1000 MSAP is already positioned, and operationalized in service provider networks, and its many connectivity options can be leveraged for satisfying the increasing bandwidth capacity demands to the cell sites, the three (3) GbE226, GbE222 and ES10/100 Ethernet cards become ideal options.

Remote Offices and Cabinets – To fully optimize the capacity

of the Tellabs 1000 CBA, best practices call for the installation of the GbE222 Gigabit Ethernet plug-in card into the same shelf as the service cards (e.g. xDSL, ES10/100). With the GbE222 installed in an expansion shelf, the traffic to/from DSL lines can be maximized [Diagram 3]. This can be used for providing high bitrate, premium services or increasing the service area coverage. The 10G GbE226 can then be leveraged to connect multiple CBAs in a remote office, or cabinet, each with an installed gigabit Ethernet GbE222. A GbE226 10G uplink can be installed in any shelf within a terminal and all of the gigabit Ethernet GbE222’s in the terminal’s shelves can interface with it. The GbE226 10G uplink provides an option to backhaul the traffic over a 10G Ethernet link or 1G Ethernet link. Now you have a choice to backhaul that traffic over either 1Gbps or 10Gbps ports on that GbE226 back to the Central Office.

Diagram 3 Business Premises –The combination of the GbE226, or the

GbE222, and the Tellabs Small 1048 Channel Bank Assembly (CBA1048) is ideal for these Fiber to the Business (FTTB) applications. The CBA1048 is right-sized with 14 slots that include 4 integrated common-control slots for processing and power plug-ins and 10 general-purpose slots that support any narrowband or broadband Tellabs 1000 MSAP business services, including POTS, DS0 Specials, DS1, DS3, ADSL2+, VDSL2 plus the Ethernet Service ES10/100 card and all can be backhauled using either the GbE226 or the GbE222 card.

Multiple Ethernet options, access network optimization and cost-effective means to maximize revenues The Tellabs 1000 MSAP is a powerful tool for service providers to combat business threats from competitive service providers. Furthermore, there are significant revenue opportunities associated with adopting IP/Ethernet interface that can be captured on the Tellabs 1000 embedded base without abandoning the revenue-generating ISDN, Special, DS-1 and DS-1 IMA type TDM services. Thus, the Tellabs 1000 is a true MSAP with all the right features and functionality to support your target applications with Ethernet connectivity - Converge, Collapse, and Connect with the Tellabs 1000 MSAP.
