Dear Colleagues,

On behalf of the Board of the Hellenic Society of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery(HESPRAS) and the Board of the Hellenic Association for the Treatment of Maxillofacial Cancer(HATMC), it is an honor and a pleasure for us to welcome you to the 2nd International Meetingon Aesthetic and Reconstructive Facial Surgery (IMAFR) that takes place again in Greece, inthe birthplace of Hippocrates, the island of Kos on September 1-3, 2011.

On May 2009 the 1st meeting was held in the island of Mykonos and more than 400 colleaguesaround the world had the opportunity to enjoy a very active scientific event and a joyful socialprogram.

We chose another famous Greek island, the island of Kos, in the Dodecanese archipelagos, equally beautiful, with many attractions, the biggest of which is being the land were Hippocrates, the father of Medicine, instituted 25 centuries ago the first hospital and medical school in theworld.

The lessons we learned from the organization of the 1st meeting will certainly help us to providean even better academic program that will cover all aspects of aesthetic and reconstructive facialsurgery from Fillers and Botulin Toxin A to the most sophisticated approaches for facialrejuvenation, rhinoplasty, facial implants, fat transfer, endoscopy as well as microsurgery, aesthetic facial reconstruction, head and neck cancer and facial allotransplantation. Adistinguished faculty from around the world will cover the full scope of facial surgery.

The intention of the 2nd meeting is again be threefold. Educational, scientific and recreational.Educational for the young and the older, scientific for the inventing and inquiring minded andrecreational, for all of us.

We are confident that we prepared a memorable scientific event for the years to come. One thatwill broaden our scientific horizons and strengthen our cultural ties through the social programin a way that the everlasting Hippocratic values that have dominated our noble profession formore than 2500 years will remain alive and unchanged from the passing of time, enlighteningour path in life, family and society.

With our warmest regards,

Apostolos D. Mandrekas, MD, PhD Alexander D. Rapidis, MD, DDS, PhD

KOS

Kos or Cos is a Greek island in the southSporades group of the Dodecanese, nextto the Gulf of Gökova. It measures 40kilometres by 8 kilometres, and is 4kilometres from the coast of Bodrum,Turkey and the ancient region of Caria. The island has both fertile plains andmountainous highlands with apopulation of 30,947. It comprises threemunicipalities: Kos, the administrativecenter and largest town (pop. 17,890),Dikaio, and Irakleides.

The main port and population centre on theisland, also called Kos, is also the tourist andcultural centre, comprised mainly ofwhitewashed buildings. There are still tracks ofthe ancient city and its castle around the port, which was built in 1450-1478 by St. John’sknights who conquered the island. Excavationsin the old city brought to light findings from the“agora” which dates back to Classic Age as wellas the conservatory, the high school and theRoman bath.

The picture of the modern city of Kos ispresented and painted nowadays withmodern buildings, big hotel complexesand avenues full of palm trees isimpressive.

The ancient physician Hippocrates isthought to have been born on Kos, andin the center of the town is the PlaneTree of Hippocrates, a dream templewhere the physician is traditionallysupposed to have taught. The limbs of

the now elderly tree are supported by scaffolding. The small city is also home to theInternational Hippocratic Institute and the Hippocratic Museum dedicated to him. Nearthe Institute are the ruins of Asklepieion, where Herodicus taught Hippocratesmedicine. Kardamena is a popular resort for young British holidaymakers and has alarge number of bars and nightclubs.
