THE TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME:

Is This Your Final Answer?

We all have watched at least one episode of “Who wants to be a Millionaire?”. In that TV program after almost all the answers we hear “Is this your final answer?” Today Jesus places two more important questions to us as well. He might not need the final answer. Before we give our answer maybe we can call a friend, search web on any file lines; but we have to answer. The question that Jesus proposes to his disciples at first glance is rather simple to answer. "Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” What is trying to accomplish by asking these kind of question. By looking at his actions, way he behaves, what judgement calls people has been made for him. Their responses were John the Baptist, Elijah, Jeremiah, other prophets. This was the entry question. Now is the million dollar question. But who do you say that I am? May be we can have different answers if you look at the personal level (I would say surface level). Here are some examples. When Andrew was just saved from a car accident Jesus would be Andrew’s

protector and healer. When Mary didn’t know where to turn in her life and just found the way Jesus

would be Mary’s counsellor. When Nancy and Mark lost their baby He showed Jesus will come as their consoler,

comforter and peace. We all can find at least one of these in our lives. These are great testimonies. But what happen after these personal incidents. Will the connection remains the same? Will there be any change of our life styles so Jesus can lead us? Will we change our lives so Jesus can minister to others through ourselves? Simply will these become an encounter for us? Or we will stick at the surface level after accepting Jesus as healer / protector / councillor / comforter etc and not accept his as God who can do a radical change in our lives. What is his identity in our lives? That is the million dollar question. According to my understanding what Jesus was trying to do was understanding weather he has accomplished what God the father has sent him to do. We all know Jesus is the human face of God. He was trying to understand if he is reflecting God the father and Peter gave the answer. Let’s turn to ourselves. When we were born God has imprinted his image in our hearts. Do we let others to see it? I have heard following from one preacher. “If I am not Christ-like at heart—if I’m not becoming noticeably more like Him—then I have totally missed God’s purpose for my life. It doesn’t matter what I accomplish for His kingdom. If I miss this one purpose, I have lived, preached and yes, striven in vain.” Doesn’t it true? May be we have identified Jesus as only healer / protector / councillor / comforter etc then we are walking with him not IN HIM. He is not in our hearts fully. This is what happens to apostles during the first three years (before they receive Holy Spirit). They witnessed all the miracles, walk with Jesus, but Jesus was not in their hearts. That is why they were afraid and try to went back to their old occupations. But after receive the Holy Spirit, very same people were able to witness for Jesus and even died for him. Because he was inside their hearts. This is what has happened today. We haven’t identified “real Jesus”. We have defined our own Jesus. Real Jesus is God and we will not let him in because we know he will change us. Because he said “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you." (John 20:21). He will definitely send us to the cross. No doubt about it. But to accept that change and reflect it to others we need one and only life line. Holy Spirit. If you haven’t yet found the final answer yet please call the help line. He will help you.
