INSTRUCTIONS: Answer all questions in this section.

Read the two passages below carefully and answer thequestions under them. Shade the answer space in theanswer sheet which bears the same letter as the answeryou have chosen.

PASSAGE 1

There are different kinds of scientists. There are scientists who studyhow the stars move. There are those who are interested in agricultureand helping to find ways in which to grow trees.

But how does a scientist work? How does he discover things? Well, ascientist spends a lot of time in training. He learns how to observe, tolook carefully at what goes on around him. He learns how toexperiment and how to write down his results.

A good example of a scientist at work is Dr Okafor, who studies andtries to develop different varieties of trees. He has developed abreadfruit which is four feet (1.2m) high above the ground. Thisvariety, as you know, is very different from the tall breadfruit trees thatyou actually see on the farms.

Dr Okafor works with the Forestry Development Investigation Branch ofthe Forestry Commission in Enugu. He is developing a crop breedingprogramme in order to produce new and better types of some of ourwell-known trees such as breadfruit, agbono and pear trees. Many ofthe new breeds bear more fruits and start producing earlier than theolder ones we all know. He has a farm where he plants, experiments, observes and writes down his findings. These findings are very usefulto the government, other scientists and the farmers.

Choose the best answer for each question.

1. Scientists are trained

PASSAGE 2

I had heard from many preachers and elders in our area that it is goodto give at least part of whatever one has to others especially, thosewho are in need. They would support this statement by giving manyinstances that they themselves had experienced or witnessed or thatthey had heard or read about it. The lesson to be learnt from all theaccounts was the same: the more you give, the more you have. I nevertook them serious because the argument didn’t sound convincingenough to me. Otherwise how could a boy who decided to give out

thirty out of the fifty naira he has still have more? More than whatwould he have? I, therefore, continued to stick to my own belief; themore you give, the less you have.

Then it happened one day, about 5.30p.m when two of mychildhood friends and fellow boarding house students came to me.They had exhausted their pocket money and all their provisions. Theyhad eaten nothing that day and they had come to me as their lasthope. I should assist them with whatever I could give which they wouldreturn later in the week after their return from home. The day wasMonday and I knew they will not be back in school until Sundayevening.

I explained that I myself had hardly enough to last me till Fridayafternoon but they pressed harder. I would have lied to them that I hadno money on me but it was in their presence that my guardian sent thebalance of my pocket money to me. Unable to send them away emptyhanded, I gave to each of them one hundred naira note, leaving formyself only one hundred and fifty naira.

Though my friends were grateful, I was highly disturbed because Iknew what I had left would not last me two days.

I was in my classroom Tuesday morning thinking more of how Iwould survive till Sunday than of the lesson in progress when thePrincipal sent for me. He handed over to me a sum of one thousand, six hundred naira from my parents. I was so happy to even thank thePrincipal. I collected the money and raced off.
