When applying a joint that you are unfamiliar with, accept the default settings and apply thejoint. Then look to see what needs to be modified. This is quicker than trying to set the valuesfor the joint before seeing what the joint actually creates. Incorrect values in some fields of the

joints can cause the joint to be red or to not be created at all.

If the joint does not create the parts that you require by default, for example stiffener plates,first look for a switch to turn them on.

If a switch cannot be found, try placing a value in the field for the part thickness.

Likewise, if parts are created that are not wanted, first look for the switch to turn them off. If noswitch exists in the joint, place a value of zero (0) in the thickness field for that part.

Some joints and macros require that the profiles to be created by the joint are specified. If thejoint is not created or turns red, try entering a legitimate profile in the appropriate location.

If you have difficulty applying a joint and it seems as though nothing is happening. Watch yourprompts. You may need to click the middle mouse button to terminate the part selectionprocess. If you are applying a joint that only allows for one secondary member, you may seethe message "Many parts found". This means that Xsteel cannot determine which parts to

make the joint to. Either you have multiple parts in the same location or you depth settings forthe view are too deep.

On the Bolts Tab of the joint, whenever you see a small field in front of a longer field,

the small field is the number of bolts and the longer field is the spacing between bolts.

A bitmap in a pull-down menu with two arrows rotating around each otherrepresents the default setting. If Autodefaults is not being used the joint will be made with thehard-coded default settings. If Autodefaults is being used, the value in the joint attribute that isto be applied for a particular situation is used.

A bitmap in a pull-down menu with an "A" represents the automatic setting.Xsteel will try to pick the best option for this setting when applying the joint.

For instance, when the automatic setting is used to define bolt placement in the leg of an anglebrace. The bolts will be put on the centerline. When the default setting is used, the bolts willbe placed at the usual gage line for that size angle.

At the top of every joint page is a button that allows the user to initiate the last joint used.

Most of the joints provide clues as to how the joint has to be applied. On the Picture tab of thejoint you will usually see a bitmap representation of the joint. In the bitmap you should see ajoint symbol that shows which direction the joint needs to point with respect to the primarymember.

If the joint requires more than one secondary member to be chosen, you will also find a bitmapshowing the picking order.
