Austin – A crowd of peoplestood outside the front door of a TejanoClub. All were anxiously waiting to getin. There were couples, men and singleladies all smiling and talking amongstthemselves. Some were clasping moneyas if expecting, rightly so, to pay for theTejano band’s performance that evening
It has been said that thedefinition of a musician is “a performerwho packs a $500 old car with $500worth of musical gear, travels 100 milesto get $50 for a three hour gig”. Andthat almost sums it up. It happens toTejano musicians somewhere in Austinevery night, seven days a week, justabout every day of the year.
“What makes a Tejanomusician want to do that for so littlepay?” you might ask.
First of all, there is the love ofmusic. Since early childhood the desireto learn music makes a youngster wantto blow a horn, pick at a guitar or bass, bang on a drum, squeeze an accordionor sit at a keyboard to feel the musicsurge from the instrument. The feelingof those first few notes is awesome andinspirational. Music will be in their bloodforever.
Next is the passion forperforming; being before hundreds ofpeople is a true musician’s dream. Thenoise of the crowd, the applause, thesatisfied look on people’s faces as the
band plays, all inspires the performer tocontinue his musical endeavors.
Then there is the recognition byfellow musicians, promoters, clubowners and industry leaders. The tapof knuckles by fellow players on stageat the end of a solo, the calls frompromoters and club owners for gigs andfinally the honor of a Tejano MusicAward or a Grammy.
Hours and more hours ofpractice and even private lessons, arduous sessions at the recording studio, being away from home on gigs, the roadto the top was long and steep.
But after all the dreams, desires, dedication and hard work, one thing isusually missing from any musician’sendeavors: money.
Let’s pay our Tejano musicianswell; they most certainly deserve it. Notonly does it award the many years ofdedication to their art, but musician’sbetter pay also enhances and advancesTejano music as well. It will inspire moreTejano musicians to perform andmotivate more Tejano composers to plytheir trade. It will induce clubs to hiremore Tejano performers. It will betterTejano music all around. When a clubasks for a cover charge, keep in mindyou are contributing to the bettermentof Tejano music. Let’s keep Tejanomusic very much alive in Austin, Texasand all over the world.
