DESCRIPTION

2-1 SYSTEM OPERATION

The Vickers starter is used in a closed loop hydraulic circuit. High pressure fluidflows directly from a supply pump to the starter as illustrated in Figure 2-1. This basiccircuit is modified by the addition of filters, gages, check valves, and valving necessaryfor the particular application.

Fluid flows and pressures to the starter will vary as dictated by the model and speed.

One starter is mounted on each turbine engine to be started. Hydraulic pressure isapplied to any one of the hydraulic starters. The starter converts the high pressure fluidpower to shaft torque to motor the engine during starting. The starter discharges the fluidto the low pressure side of the system for return to the supply pump(s).

2-2 VARIABLE DISPLACEMENT HYDRAULIC STARTER

The variable displacement hydraulic starter contains a rotating group consisting of acylinder block and nine axially mounted piston assemblies that rotate between the valveplate on one side and the cam plate on the other side. The flat face of the cylinder blockrotates in contact with the hydrostatically balanced valve plate, while the hydrostaticallybalanced piston assemblies rotate in contact with the inclined flat face of the cam. Sincethe hydraulic reaction force is carried on the hydrostatically balanced surfaces on bothsides of the cylinder block, bearing thrust load is reduced to a minimum. As both camand valve plate are located in the housing, the full amount of hydraulic pressure isapplied to the housing.

The cylinder block is allowed to pivot on the spherical surface of the crowned spline, which also serves as the driven member so that the block aligns itself with the valve plateto ensure that the sealing surface is in full contact, thereby reducing leakage to aminimum. A spring inside the cylinder blocks keeps the block in contact with the valveplate during starting ( maximum load ) and standby ( no load ). Porting is accomplishedby the interconnection of properly timed passages in the cylinder block and valve plate.

The starter utilizes a pressure compensating control to regulate displacement ( camangle ). The pressure compensator control setting is adjusted at a pressure level slightlybelow the pressure level of the system supply pump ( rated inlet pressure ). The starterwill remain in full angle ( full displacement until a speed is attained which uses the fulloutput flow (rated inlet flow ) from the pump.

Rated fluid flow is limited by a flow control valve or supply pump flow output limit.Pressure will decrease with further starter acceleration initiatirg starter compensatorcontrol action. For operation from attainment of rated flow speed tQ cut-out speed, thepressure compensator control decreases the cam angle with increasing speed, maintaining a constant flow rate. At maximum attainable speed ( cut-off speed),minimum cam angle is realized, preventing further increase in starter speed. ( Anyincrease in speed would require a flow rate in excess of the flow control valve or pumpcapacity).

The maximum cam angle is typically set at 6 CIR full displacement with minimumcam angle approximately 50% of full displacement.

An overrunning clutch allows the engine to operate without rotation of the mainelements of starter after the starting cycle is complete. The maximum and minimum camangles are set by stops. The overrunning clutch is a caged, sprag type assemblysupported in anti- friction bearings.

Page 10: TEICAL MANUAL FOR TURBINE ENGINE …...The hydraulic starter is used to start gas turbine engines. Precise starter configura-tion and performance will vary sightly depending upon which

The clutch allows the engine to accelerate from the starter cut-out speed ( 4000 rpmapproximately ) up to engine idle speed and operate without further rotation of the mainelements of the starter. During overrunning, only the small inner shaft of the starter isdriven by the engine.

The unit is direct mounted to the engine gear box and drives the engine through afloating spline coupling. The starter is self-lubricated by the system fluid. A case drainport is provided and is connected to the reservoir in the accessory skid. The seal drainport is open to a drip pan, but sees no flow under normal operations.

The starter control may be equipped with a "soft start" feature if desired. With this -feature the starter output torque ramps up to maximum level at initiation of the start cycleover a 3 (three) second period. This compares to a build up time of 1.25 second with thestandard control. Operation after this initial condition is unchanged from standard control. This feature is incorporated in starter model 53WK57016-1,53WK57017 and53WK5701 8.

INSTALLATION

3-1 HYDRAULIC STARTERS

REFER TO FIGURE 3-1 THROUGH 3-9 FOR HYDRAULIC STARTERINSTALLATION DRAWINGS FOR ENVELOPE AND MOUNTING REQUIREMENTS.rHE DATA TABLES ON BOTTOM OF DRAWING GIVE OPERATING PARAMETERS'FLOW, PRESSURES, AND SPEEDS, ETC.).

Install starters on the engine gear box pads, positioning them so that the starter/ertical centerline is as shown in the applicable starter installation drawing. Check thatJirection of rotation of engine gearbox is the same as the starter. Rotation facing3earbox pad should be same as rotation facing starter cover.

#AUTION: DO NOT LIFT STARTER BY EXTERNAL HOSE OR FITTINGS.

Secure starter to mounting pad with locknut or by lockwiring nuts. Concentricity andingularity of starter coupling connection must be within limits of the mounting padspecification. Pitch and diameter of spline shall run concentrically with pilot diameterWithin 0.006 inch TIR and square with mounting face within 0.004 inch TIR.

Lubricate splined coupling prior to installation per Table 3-2.

3-2 HYDRAULIC INTERCONNECTION

Refer to applicable installation drawings (Figure 3-1 through 3-9 ) for port locationsmd connection of units. Hydraulic lines to~starter must bd large enough to prevent)xcessive pressure drops. If Teflon tape or other point sealants are used at connectingittings, care should be taken to keep sealant from entering system. These sealants clogliter elements causing undue pressure loss and possible system malfunction.

Table 3-1 lists all connecting lines required for plumbing the hydraulic starter.

3-3 CLEANLINESS

CAUTION: TO ENSURE EFFICIENT, TROUBLE-FREE OPERATION OF THEHYDRAULIC STARTER. IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT ALL HYDRAULIC SYSTEMCOMPONENTS AND FLUID BE FREE OF DIRT, WATER, AND OTHERCONTAMINANTS. THE STARTER HAS BEEN THROUGHLY CLEANED AND ALLPARTS SEALED BY THE MANUFACTURER BEFORE SHIPMENT. EXTREME CAREMUST BE TAKEN TO ELIMINATE THE POSSIBILITY OF THE HYDRAULICINTERCONNECTING LINES AND FITTINGS CARRYING CONTAMINATION INTOSYSTEM.

All hydraulic interconnecting lines should be cleaned (steam cleaned, pickled, etc. ) afterall fabrication work (bending, welding, etc.) has been completed.

The system should then be flushed using a separate flush pump with a largefilter. A restrictor valve ( manual shut off ) with jumper hoses, if required, should be installed at starter location. System should be flushed at varyingpressures and flows up to rated conditions. Filter should be checkedperiodically and flushing continued until no contaminates are found in theelement.

All connecting pipe and subassemblies shall be flushed so that a fluid sample, extracted per ISO 4021 and analyzed for contamination per ISO 3938, shall satisfy solidparticle contamination levels per ISO 4406, CLASS 1613.

OPERATION

4-1 OPERATING CONTROLS

The starter control pressure is adjusted at the factory and should not require anyfurther regulating unless the complete control assembly has been removed.

(SEE FIG. 4-1, FOR ENGINE STARTING TORQUE RELATIONSHIPS)

1-2 ENGINE START-UP

Start-up is initiated when the supply pump provides maximum flow and pressure tothe starter. This flow will accelerate the starter ( and engine.) to engine light off speed, and continue to assist the engine after light off to cut-out speed. At cut-out speed thesupply pump must be de-stroked and the supply pump control valve closed. This, intum, stops rotation of the motoring portion of the starter. The clutch integrated in thestarter freewheels and allows the engine to overrun the starter.

4-3 ENGINE CRANKING

Cranking operation is initiated the same way as for engine start-up with the supplysump in the maximum flow and pressure mode. The starter ( and engine ) accelerates:hrough the engine light-off speed, however the engine is not started. The speed willteak and hold at a level where starter input torque and engine drag torque are balanced.rhis condition is sometimes used for water wash, check out engine lube, etc. Normalstart-up operation can be achieved by ignition of the engine at which time acceleration toout-off will occur.

t-4 ENGINE LOW SPEED WATER WASH CYCLE

When this cycle is selected by using the Start Pac pump control valves, the supply)ump provides partial flow to the starter. The starter will crank the turbine at a reducedspeed as desired. This speed is lower than the engine light off speed. Normal start upan be achieved by putting supply pump in maximum flow and pressure mode.
