First and foremost, Gulf Shores is known as a beach town....and rightfully so. The sandy white beaches are some of the most beautiful in the world. Add to that the laid-back atmosphere and sprinkle in a little southern hospitality and it’s no wonder that so many visitors flock to the area by the thousands each year.

When visiting Gulf Shores, make sure to bring more than your swim suit and flip flops.....the golf clubs are an absolute must! And a round of golf at Gulf Shores Golf Club will make your trip complete.

Gulf Shores Golf Club originally opened in 1964 and is the oldest course on the island. It got a major facelift and redesign in 2005 by Jay and Carter Morrish. The course is both fun and challenging, and is always in great condition!

Gulf Shores Golf Club is a traditional style course with generous fairways, large undulating greens, and water on 9 of the 18 holes. The scenic course is home to an abundance of wildlife. Squirrels, raccoons, and alligators are just a few of the residents you may encounter.

Four sets of tees allow golfers of all abili-ties the opportunity to challenge them-selves and still enjoy the round.

In the first four holes alone you’ll be met with a great example of the variety of chal-lenges you’ll experience at Gulf Shores Golf Club. Number 1 is a short par 4 that allows you to ease into the round. The second is a medium-long par 4 with water protecting the front-left portion of the green. Number 3 is par 5, where accuracy is the key. Water guards both sides of the fairway, so staying dry is a must on this hole. Number 4 is the first of a great group of par 3s at Gulf Shores Golf Club, playing 175 yards from the #2 tees and with water protecting the front and left portion of the green.

Holes 6 and 7 are two of the most memo-rable on the course. The par 3 sixth is fronted by water from tee to green and to the right. It’s both a great test of golf and is one of the most beautiful holes on the Gulf Coast.

The par 5 seventh plays almost 600 yards from the championship tees and is dotted by a number of cross bunkers. It’s a true 3 shot hole....and then some if you mishit one along the way!

The back side is full of more great golf and a really strong finish. Number 17 is proba-bly the most demanding hole on the course. The par four is long, straight, and tight, so you’ll need your best tee shot here. The

IMPACT! How To Improve the Moment of Truthby Rea Schuessler, PGA Professional

When on the lesson tee and observ-ing a new student who is not a raw beginner, I always analyze their fun-damentals, but also watch where the bottom of their swing is. Research conducted by Bobby Clampett while working for CBS has proven that regardless of swing style that the bottom of a tour players swing is 4 inches past the ball and that for every inch a golfers swing bottom backs up their handicap goes up 4 to 5 points. That is a pretty significant finding in my opinion.

Improving this one aspect of your swing can truly help you enjoy this great and challenging game. All you do is simply place a tee in the ground where the ball would be and make swings attempting to clip the grass or make a divot and see where your

swing bottom is. If it is in front of the tee consistently after at least 5 swings in a row this important swing dynamic is better than most.

Remember a tour players swing bot-tom is 4 inches in front of the ball. Strive for that and you have one very important component of the golf swing heading in the right direction. Practice when you have time and en-joy the challenge of this great game!

Finding the hips too far underneath the shoulders is weak position. There are many reasons to correct this posture and set up po-sition!. This is also a poor position for ob-taining the activation of the “core muscles” that we need to achieve 65 % of our power. Push the hips sockets back and up so that the pelvis is at an angle, not horizontal to the ground. As you push the hips back, and up, this will lower the chest and place the weight toward the back of the arch of the foot.

For full swing shots, other than a Driver, the inside of the heels should be as wide as the outside of the hips (for a Driver the in-side of the heels as wide as the outside of the shoulders).

Back to Fundamentals...Tips to Improve Your Postureby Bobby Hall, PGA Professional

Regardless of the player’s level of golf anyone can get into a posture that looks as good as any Tour Player, it takes no athletic ability to get into a proper posture! Notice the line of the back and angle of the spine. Refuse to get lazy and find yourself into the “arching back”. Have a fellow player take a picture of your set up to see for your self.

Try to position your hands (grip) to be lo-cated underneath your chin. Not under your shoulders and not too far out in front of your nose! The proper positioning of the hands will assist in obtaining the proper swing plane that leads to more consistent ball striking.

Another incorrect position is known as the “S” curve. If you find you are in this posi-tion, simply try to level your “belt” making in parallel to the ground. The leveling of your hips should help straighten your spine angle.

fairway is tree-lined and a canal runs along the right hand side of the fairway. Get out of here with a par and you’ll be ahead of the game!

The final hole is a par five that offers the golfer a chance to finish with a birdie. You’ll need to navigate the hazard in front of the green (one of the few forced carries on the course) to get it done, though. The undulating green will challenge the best of putters, so hit it close on this one!

After your round, step inside the planta-tion-style clubhouse and enjoy a bite to eat or a cold beverage in the clubs full-service restaurant, “The Grill”.

Gulf Shores Golf Club is a quality golf ex-perience – definitely one of the best in the area. Each hole is unique and stands alone just fine, but the holes also flow together quite well and make for a great round of golf.

I would definitely recommend Gulf Shores Golf Club to players of all skill levels and to locals and visitors alike. The club offers annual and partial year memberships, “six pack” round packages, and daily fee op-tions.

Hello all my golfing foodies. In case you have not noticed it is summertime and that means early morn-ing golf and afternoon BBQs down here in the Deep South. As an avid golfer and professional Chef (I do get paid…..most of the time), I get asked a bunch of questions about golf and food. The most often asked question about golf I get is “How do I correct my slice?” My answer is always the same: “Are you a righty? If yes….aim further left” As for food questions

T h e G o l f i n g G o u r m e tStop Your Whining & Star t Your Brining

I get asked one question particularly often.

“How should I cook my ribs? And what the heck is Brining?” Well folks here you go. The last great secret of the culinary world is about to be revealed. Ever wonder when you go to a real fancy restaurant and you order the herb encrusted thick enter cut pork chop and it comes out juicy and perfect and on your table in about 12 minutes? The same with the half chicken with its fos-emary infused breast and crispy skin. Man…… I am making myself hungry. Well here is the secret………Drum Roll…..BRINING!!!

Brining is defined simply “to soak or saturate in salty water”. When any type of protein is infused with a salty solution the salt repels the liquid leav-ing the liquid somewhere to absorb. In our case that would be whatever meat you have resting in that solution. With that being said the salty solution also breaks down tendons and cartilages making the meat much more tender al-lowing a quicker cook time while allowing the meat to retain more of its juic-es. Well there you have it. For me, I brine all of my poultry and pork. I do not however brine red meats (except when making corned beef). The recipe below is the brining solution I use for my ribs. Now I am certainly not order-ing you to ditch your secret rub or your cooking technique, all I am asking you is to try brining your ribs before you start the rub and cooking process. However, be aware, If you add a rub post brining be sure to check your rub for the salt content. Over-salting will kill your ribs. I suggest the following process for succulent crisp on the outside, moist on the inside ribs.

Try to dissolve salt as well as possible. Add meat to cooler with brining solution or put meat in brining bag and add mixture. Refrigerate for 8-12 hours.Take meat out of brining solution and pat dry. This is where you can add your secret rub. ( Re-member – NO SALT) Allow to come to room temperature again. My cooking method is on charcoal grill with indirect heat around 300 degrees on slab rack for about 3 hours.

Enrie Smith is the Director of Golf at Gulf Shores Golf Club. The position seems tailor-made for Ernie, given his love for golf and for working with the public. Best of all he gets to do what he loves in Gulf Shores - an area he visited for many years before making it his home.

Ernie and his wife, Judy moved to Gulf Shores from Greenville, Alabama in 2000. They have two sons who both live with their families in the Gulf Shores area. Ernie enjoys spend-ing his hours away from Gulf Shores Golf Club with his family.....especially his three grandchildren.

Get to Know....... Ernie Smith

Ernie was the mayor of Greenville for 7 years and was preparing to run for another term when the family home was destroyed by a fire. He and Judy knew they would make Gulf Shores their full time home someday anyway, so plans changed and they made the move south.

Ernie worked for the City of Gulf Shores as City Administrator until retiring in 2008. It just so happened that Gulf Shores Golf Club was looking for a Director of Golf, so true retirement would have to wait!

Ernie began playing golf while in college at Troy. He has a love for the game, but mostly appreciates the people he’s had the opportunity to meet through the years.

Gulf Shores Golf Club is one of the finest courses in our area - and definitely one of the most fun! Ernie and his staff always make sure that you feel right at home and enjoy your golfing experience.

Make sure to read our article on page 8 featuring Gulf Shores Golf Club.....and say hello to Director of Golf Ernie Smith.

The Best Kept Secret In The South: Stewart Lodges at SteelwoodBy Randy Burgan, Radio Host and Sports Broadcaster

I have had the opportunity to visit and play many of the fantastic golf courses in America, stay in some of the most gorgeous resorts while hanging out with some of my best friends. In saying that, there is a secret place which is right here in my backyard, that provided an experi-ence like no other. I’m speaking of The Stewart Lodges at Steelwood. I was catered with golf, fishing and an absolute feast provided by the General Manager, the Entertainment Committee Chairman, The Executive Chef and a dog-gone great golfer, Mr. Danny Spy-bey.

The Stewart Lodges have all of the amenities and facilities desired in two fully-furnished lodges with private guest rooms and baths, screened in porches, TVs, internet and several entertain-ing facilities all overlooking a 200-acre stocked, fresh-water lake, which is nestled in an 1500+ acre gated country club community. The Stewart Lodges, located in Loxley, AL about 20 minutes outside of Mobile,

offers a beautiful fireplace in each of the two lodges, billiards, card tables, a surround sound stereo system, DVD and VCR and a large screen movie theatre/conference room with a collection of available movies. In The Lodges you will find a walk in bar including an ice maker, and a fully furnished kitchen with appli-ances (dishwasher, coffee makers, etc.), flatware, plates, glasses and cooking utensils.Connecting the two lodges, you will find a beautiful pool, cabana and enter-tainment space. This area is perfect for entertaining the corporate firm or simply watching the children frolic in the pool! Private and only for the use of Stewart Lodges guests, the pool is equipped with a kitchen (refrigerator, stove, microwave, dishwasher, ice machine, and sink), rest-rooms, pool towels, TV and stereo. One of the many advantages of using The Stewart Lodges is access to otherwise exclusively private amenities for your recreational enjoyment including a driv-ing range, sporting clays, fishing, fitness center, tennis courts, and an 18-hole golf course designed by former US Open champion Jerry Pate. In addition, in-

house catering is available, as well as access to their magnificent country club facili-ties for dining and entertainment. You are invited to visit The Stewart Lodges and see why they are described as...Unspoiled. Unexpected. Unparalleled.Since before the turn of the century, people throughout America have sought quiet refuge in nature. The “great camps” of the Adirondacks, the majestic plantations of South Georgia, the quiet grandeur of the country estates in the Berkshires, celebrated lodges nestled throughout the world offering impeccable service and Old World charm within a stunning natural setting.

The Stewart Lodges have captured this charm in an ideal location for exclusive cor-porate retreats, strategic planning meetings, casual get-togethers and vacations with family and friends. Places where corporate executives, co-workers and friends can gather to enjoy the luxury of simple, natural pleasures: the sound of the wind rustling through the treetops, observing the migrating waterfowl, a quiet porch immersed in a good book, sleeping under an open window listening to the night sounds, colleagues’ collective laughter around a fire in a lodge or an early morning fishing trip on the misty lake. When you get ready for that quiet get-a-way with family, friends, a business retreat or even a wedding, I would encourage you to make The Stewart Lodges at Steelwood your first consideration. I can honestly tell you that I will go back again and again. Simply put, The Stewart Lodges at Steelwood is absolutely AWESOME!!

Simply unlock your knees, you’ll feel a little pressure above the kneecaps, and let the arms hang limply downward from the shoulder socket. There should be NO TENSION in the arms or shoulders. Some players like to tilt their upper bod-ies slightly away from target as the final set-up adjustment and just because your trailing hand is lower than the target side hand this is acceptable, just don’t over-due it. BALL POSITIONBall position is the most misunderstood portion of the entire set-up. There have been many opinions about ball position. Some say one position for every shot, others say move it around depending on the club.

The player also has the “option” of starting with the shaft, and hands, at a mid-body position. We also need to cover where the ball is located in relation to the player’s upper body, not the feet. The width of the stance changes during the course of a round but the width of the up-per body does not.

In addition, the target side shoulder socket is the low point of the arc and the fulcrum of the target side arm swing. Therefore the ball with a wedge will be

in the center of the chest, in line with the sternum, for full swing shots, the 5 iron under the target side of the chest, and the Driver at the low point, which is the shoulder socket. This could vary depend-ing on whether the player has exception-ally wide shoulders, but for the most part these locations will be fine for irons but the target side shoulder socket IS the LOW POINT and the Driver MUST be played at this location for straight shots!

Back of this location produces a fade, with no manipulation, and forward of this location produces a draw, with no manipulation. You may see some play-ers playing the ball back, or forward, of the target side shoulder socket but these players must either change the shoulder location at Impact, by leaning backward with the upper body, or must manipulate the clubface to hit a straight shot.

Have a friend or even better a Golf Professional help you with your set up and posture. Check your angels of setup, hand placement and ball position. All will help with fundamentals of the swing and more importantly, finding Low Point of the swing for better ball striking!Bobby Hall is the Director of Golf at Quail Creek Golf Course in Fairhope, AL. When you think of playing golf in California you think of Pebble Beach, Sherwood Country Club maybe Riviera and even Torrey Pines but those could be way out of the price range for the average golfer. I went to Southern California to visit with our West Coast Ra-dio Correspondents, Vyn Goodmon and Jim Starky where they treated me to 3 fabulous golf courses that you might want to check out when traveling in the San Diego or Dana Point area.

Oak Creek Golf ClubAnd last but certainly not least, a place that incorporates the full golfing experi-ence is Oak Creek Golf Club. The Course is in true Tom Fazio form, Oak Creek Golf Club beckons the competitive spirit of golf players at all levels. Each of the 18 holes throughout this Orange County golf course presents new challenges amid tapered fairways, scenic greens, beautiful lakes and bull-nose carved bunkers.

With dense and dynamic flora, Oak Creek creates a sanctuary not only for your play-ing experience but for a variety of birds and other fauna as well. Some places are just special. In the case of Oak Creek Golf Club, a number of carefully planned and naturally occurring elements have come together to make it that way.

For starters, the city of Irvine, California, where you’ll find Oak Creek, experiences nearly 300 days of sunshine a year. Talk about the ideal climate for improving your game. Out on the course, you may even find that the mild weather is an intriguing counterbalance to the challenges of this Tom Fazio-designed Southern California golf course.

As the third of four successful col-laborations between Fazio and The Irvine Company, Oak Creek Golf Club is for-ever linked to one of the greatest course designers in the game. However, that’s not the only reason for the stirring sense of place. Oak Creek Golf Club is also tied to the heritage of Orange County golf as part of the original 93,000-acre Irvine Ranch. Once an orange grove, the land was rein-terpreted for modern-day use with careful attention to environmental sensitivity and

to preserving a trace of the past, and Oak Creek Golf Club opened in 1996.

Today, the towering heritage eucalyptus that once provided a windbreak for the citrus trees now contribute to the peaceful setting. No matter your vantage point, not a single house or road interrupts the scenic beauty of the course.

But, Oak Creek is more than just a golf-er’s sanctuary. While owls and hawks nest in the eucalyptus, egrets and herons fish in the meandering creek. In fact, Oak Creek Golf Club is proud to actively participate in the innovative Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses. The course has also made important strides in conserving water and reducing the use of chemicals and pesticides.

While you may not realize that all of these unique elements enhance your playing experience, you will surely realize that this 71-par, 6,834-yard Irvine golf course beautifully captures and elevates all there is to love about the game of golf…..www.oakcreekgolfclub.com or call (949) 653-5300..

I absolutely LOVED this place!!!

Again, be sure to visit these 3 courses when in Southern California because I know you will tell your golfing buddies about these great courses and will go back time and time again.
