CAMPAIGNS WITH A REAL IMPACT

We’re going to keep this brief as there’s lots more about us and our collective achievements throughout this report. We’re also not going to waste space giving a lengthy description of who we are or what we do…you can get that at www.tees-su.org.uk/officers.

It’s been an especially exciting year as we’ve seen the biggest revamp of the SU Building in more than 2 decades thanks, in the main part, to funding from the University. We celebrate the success and impact of the redevelopment on pages 4&5.

Elected Officers, staff (permanent and student), Reps and volunteers have all worked tirelessly to deliver the very best facilities, resources, events and campaigns for students. We hope you’ll enjoy reading our Impact Report and share our huge pride at the difference your SU continues to make to the lives of students from all backgrounds.

One of the biggest highlights of the year was the major redevelopment of the ground and first floor of the SU building, the largest in over a decade.

Thanks to over £1.2m of investment from the University and the SU, we were able to radically improve our social, study and commercial spaces over the summer.

The response from students, staff and the general public since “New TUSU” launched in Sep 2014 has been spectacular with hugely increased footfall and improved income. However, the most important and satisfying outcome has been thousands of students feeling at home in their SU through the day and at night. Have a look at pictures of some of the key improvements below.

And what do students think about the New TUSU ??“The new style of the building is great…you

can do everything now…socialise, study,

have meetings.”

“…So much more convenient having the SU

Shop on the ground floor and I actually do

love the Love it Lounge!”

“Lots more space for clubs and socs to meet

and plan events/ activities….has made such a

difference.”

“The Terrace looks great and the refurb made

a real difference to the atmosphere in there at

day and of an evening.”

SERVICES AND SPACES FOR STUDENT LIFE

GIVING STUDENTS MORE

6 7

Both before and after our summer refurbishment the SU remained at the very heart of students’ lives this year providing invaluable and popular space, support, services and events through The Terrace, The SU Link, The Hub, The SU Shop, and The Welcome Desk.

We firmly believe and, the statistics show, that students who “get involved” are not only more l ikely to stay on their course but have a much more fulfi l l ing time while they’re at Uni. Our student led activities and SU activities service play an invaluable role in widening students’ hor izons. They’re also an ever more powerful means of helping students develop a range of skills to improve their employability.

One of the most anticipated evenings in the SU calendar is our Annual Awards Dinner. This year the event took place on Weds, 14th May at Gisborough Hall and, as always, it was a chance to celebrate the outstanding individuals, clubs, societies and teams who shined in 2013/14. It was also a welcome opportunity to honour both students and staff who have made an exceptional contribution over a longer period. You can see more about the winners and listen back to the ceremony at www.tees-su.org.uk/awardsdinner

TUSU ensures students get the best possible experience, so we sometimes find ourselves in the role of a “critical friend”. It was great then, to have the opportunity to celebrate the staff and schools whostudents said had really delivered with our first ever STAR Awards.

The event, developed by former Education Officer Hannah Graham, took place on Thu, 22nd May with students themselves, nominating outstanding staff & schools. A judging panel of Student Officers, Reps and SU staff then chose the winners. Find out more at www.tees-su.org.uk/starawards

AN UNFORGETTABLE DAY IN MAY ! AN UNFORGETTABLE DAY IN MAY !

14 15

Over the years the SU has seen some very memorable events in our multi award winning venues but this year’s “Final Fling” on Friday, 30th May was truly special and it all took place because of theefforts of students. They tweeted over 2 million times to help the SU to win a major national competition run by Lucozade and MTV.

Our prize was for the event to be “pimped” by major international music acts such as Sigma and DJ Fresh. MTV UK also brought a massive team of presenters and crew to film the whole event for a special broadcast while the SU Building and surrounding area became a huge festival sight for the whole day with fairground rides, outside stages and many other attractions.

Relive the whole event now with video, pictures andcomments from students at www.tees-su.org.uk/pimpedfling14

The students made it happen...so what did they think of their fling ??
