• Internal combustion engine damage to both the climate and air quality is a major concern,

• UK Government plans to ban use of diesel-only rail vehicles by 2040,

• Rail must find alternatives to diesel on non-electrified routes,

• Northern Trains (NTL) network is heavily diesel-dependent,

• NTL response: Deployment of a hydrogen train fleet to develop a diesel alternative for routes too long for alternative solutions such as battery power,

• This is not an ‘experiment’, but a revenue-earning fleet,

• This is a UK first and will help to accelerate adoption of hydrogen technology across the UK rail industry.

• Hydrogen-powered fleet of trains,

• Compressed hydrogen fuel converted to electricity by on-board fuel cells,

• Emissions – water vapour only, plus virtually silent,

• Fleet size: 10 trains, operational range ~ 600 miles per tank

• Deployment from 2023,

• Project includes a depot with hydrogen fuelling facilities on Teesside,

• Route coverage Bishop Auckland-Saltburn, Middlesbrough-Hartlepool, Middlesbrough-Whitby.

• Self-contained network of ideal size to deploy and really test a new fleet,

• Mixture of urban, interurban and rural routes,

• Non electrified network, heavily diesel-dependent,

• Ready skilled local workforce,

• Strong local support,

• Local authorities familiar with planning and safety issues associated with production and storage of hydrogen gas.

• Project approach is to modify existing rolling stock,

• Use existing well-known and reliable electric trains, converted to hydrogen,

• Allows you to demonstrate the hydrogen systems without worrying about reliability of the host train,

• UK-specific solution required – rail vehicles for mainland Europe don’t fit on our network,

• Supplier engagement – Rolling Stock Leasing Companies (ROSCOs),

• Project undertook a full technical & economic evaluation of offers,

• Eversholt/Alstom ‘Breeze’ Hydrogen Multiple unit (HMU) selected.

• Close proximity to Middlesbrough station – local network hub,

• Good road links,

• Suitable for industrial use,

• Ready skilled local workforce,

• Space for future expansion,

• Able to accommodate on-site Hydrogen production & storage at up to 500 bar

Fuel Supply Requirements:

• Secure supply required 365 days per year,

• ‘Fuel-cell grade’ high-purity required,

• Must be affordable,

• Baseline cost comparator – continued diesel operation,

• Ability to accept delivery by road to cover for equipment failure,

• Zero-carbon, renewable hydrogen manufacture specified by Project for maximum environmental benefit.

AET Hydrogen Supply Strategy:

• Encourage equipment makers, hydrogen producers and other relevant parties to combine in to consortia to bid competitively to supply hydrogen,

• Project actively involved in making introductions and encouraging consortium formation,

• Consortia tasked with offering for hydrogen ‘supply at the pump’ at £X/kg,

• Offers competitively evaluated.
