    Day 4: Peer Pressure

  • 8/14/2019 Teens and School Experience

    28/36

What is peer pressure? Your peers are the people with whom youidentify and spend time. In children andteens, they are usually, but not always, of thesame age group. In adults, peers may bedetermined less by age and more by sharedinterests or professions. Peer pressure occurswhen an individual experiences implied or

expressed persuasion to adopt similar values, beliefs, and goals, or to participate in thesame activities as those in the peer group.

  • 8/14/2019 Teens and School Experience

    29/36

You and peer pressure.Have you ever been pressured to do somethingyou weren't sure of?

Have you ever tried to pressure someone else? When you hear the term peer pressure, what

kinds of things do you think of?Smoking?

    Drinking?Doing drugs?Skipping school?

There is no way to predict which kids will experiment

  • 8/14/2019 Teens and School Experience

    30/36

There is no way to predict which kids will experimentwith drugs, alcohol and smoking. But consider thesescary statistics:

Over 10 million adolescents between the ages of 12 and 20 had at least one drink last month.

Almost 7 million consumed five or more drinks in a

row in one sitting.Nearly one-quarter of both 10th graders and 11thgraders say theyve used an illegal drug.

Statistics also suggest that kids who begin smokingbefore age 13 are much more likely thannonsmokers to have problems with alcohol anddrugs later in life. This makes an argument forbad behavior begetting bad behavior. Bothsuicide and homicide are connected with alcoholconsumption in adolescents as well.

What to do about it?What would you do to avoid peer pressure?Peer pressure peaks during adolescence, but it

never entirely disappears. Even adults feel

pressure to conform in order to belong to a groupwhether it is in the workplace, neighborhood, orin the extended family. Finding a rational balancebetween accepting group beliefs and thinking foroneself is a challenge for everyone. Many peoplewho feel as if this area of their lives is out of balance benefit from seeking professionalcounseling to help them find a level of belongingand acceptance that is more comfortable for

    them.
