About TED

TED is a nonprofit organisation devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. It started out (in 1984) as a conference bringing to-gether people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment, De-sign. Since then its scope has become ever broader. Along with two annual conferences -- the TED Conference in Long Beach and Palm Springs each spring, and the TEDGlobal conference in Edinburgh UK each summer -- TED includes the award-winning TEDTalks video site, the Open Translation Project and TED Con-versations, the inspiring TED Fellows and TEDx programs, and the annual TED Prize.

YorkIdeas worthspreading

On TED.com, we make the best talks and performances from TED and partners available to the world, for free.

Our mission: spreading ideas

We believe passionately in the power of ideas to change attitudes, lives and ultimately, the world. So we’re building here a clearinghouse that offers free knowledge and inspiration from the world’s most inspired thinkers, and also a community of curious souls to engage with ideas and each other.

The TEDx program gives communities, organizations and individuals the opportunity to stimulate dialogue through TED-like experiences at the local level. TEDx events are planned and coordinated independently.

Today, TED is best thought of as a global community. It’s a community welcoming people from every discipline and culture who seek a deeper understanding of the world.

Have an idea? We want to hear from you.

Pilot Theatre is the award-winning national touring theatre company currently in residence at York Theatre Royal. We offer a strong support network of educational resources, workshops and interactive opportunities.

Artistic Director Marcus Romer attended TED in 2007 and was inspired to develop a series of Shift Happens conferences in York as part of our commitment to develop digital opportunities for the Arts sector. Attending again in 2011 he became a TEDx organiser and was part of the social networks research group at TEDActive. He is delighted to be able to bring TEDx to York, and would like to thank all the Speakers, the TED team as well as The University of York, Arts Council England, Science City York, The Press, York Theatre Royal, York St John University and Pilot Theatre for making this event possible.

About us:

Work has also begun on the company’s large scale production for 2012, a new adaptation of Alan Sillitoe’s The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner by Roy Williams. This will premiere at York Theatre Royal before a large UK tour.

Coming soon:

Pilot will be working in partnership with York Theatre Royal in October when their co-production of David Harrower’s Blackbird premieres in York before starting a UK tour. Blackbird will be directed by our Associate Director Katie Posner and approaches the hard-hitting questions of what is abuse and what can be a relationship between a 40 year old man and a 12 year old girl.
