Aircraft carrier landing
Answer:
• By closing the feedback loop between planning and execution.
• Five important characteristics of High-Reliability Organizations (HROs):
• Preoccupation with failure
• Reluctance to simplify interpretations
• Sensitivity to operations
• Commitment to resilience
• Deference to expertise Planning

How to use toilet paper
Options:
1. Empty one roll first, only then use
second roll, refill in the meantime.
2. Use both rolls simultaneously, refill
when any gets empty.

How to use toilet paper
Answer:
• Learning follows, for a large part, from the positive and negative outcomes of
our actions, that we observe in ourselves and others.
• But:
• Can we compress this learning cycle?
• Reduce the impact of negative outcomes?
• Stimulate certain behavior?

The local storage of toilet paper
Storage solution:
• Well-known supplier of Swedish furniture
• Modular set-up with standard elements
• Assembled at home
Question:
How much time do we need to put this furniture together?

The local storage of toilet paper
Answer:
• Software helps us to play with the boundaries of time,
space and information
• Software helps us to:
• Save time (physical assembly >3 hours, virtual
build in <5 minutes)
• Re-use previous designs
• Share with others
• Make changes on the fly
• Anytime

Learning in numbers
• Early research on learning by Ebbinghaus (learning series of
syllables) and Wright (aircraft production).
• Main findings:
• Learning is a non-linear process
• Progression slows down with experience
• The number of repetitions determines the amount of learning
• Breaks between repetitions lead to “forgetting”
Question:
Can we build the same ship more than once?

Learning in numbers
Answer:
“…We build the ship in the computer a couple of times,
before we do it in real life.
By simulation we improve our planning by assuring
feasibility and increasing reliability. Production control is
supported by continuous use of simulation updated by real
production data during the whole building process…”

In summary
Key points:
• Connecting our plans and expectations to their real-world outcomes is a
prerequisite to learn and thus to improve ourselves.
• Learning is for a large part based on the outcomes of our actions, positive and
negative, that we observe in ourselves and others.
• Digital models are quick and cheap when it comes to changing a design or
scenario, as opposed to the real physical world: we can learn at a low risk and
low cost!
• The learning curve is the steepest during the first few repetitions.
