A SeriesA series PFR compounds show universal chemical resistance similar to PTFE, but with elastomeric properties. They offer the widest range of aggressive media sealing capabilities along with excellent compression set values.

They are suitable for most applications in temperature ranging from – 10 °C to 230 °C, offering outstanding resistance to aggressive media such as acids, caustics, ketones, aldehydes, esters, ethers, methanol, solvents, sour gases, amines, hydrocarbons, steam, hot water, ethylene and propylene oxide and mixed process streams. Moreover A series PFR compounds were specifically developed to cope with a wide range of potent active pharmaceutical ingredients (API‘s) and aggressive cleaning agents, being especially suited to withstand steam-in-place (SIP) and clean-in-place (CIP) procedures.

Two black and a white compound, 70 and 80 ShoreA, are available, as shown in the chart on page 7. FDA and USP Class VI PFR 70-WA1 and PFR 70-BA4 are intended for repeated use in food processing equipment and to be in contact with food types I through VII Table 1 – Types of Raw and Processed Food. The base perfluoroelastomer is registered in the FDA Inventory of Effective Food Contact Substances (FCS) Notifications, being the subject of Food Contact Notification (FCN # 128).

PFR 70-WA1 post cured either 8 h at 200 °C or (8+16) h at 230 °C is in compliance with the requirements of USP Plastic Class VI as it passed the United State Pharmacopoeia (USP) Biological Reactivity test, IN VIVO. Any intermediate combination of both post-curing time and temperature is compliant too.

X SeriesX series PFR compounds provide a significantly wider operational range and superior compression set resistance than any other perfluoroelastomer. With an upper temperature limit of 300 ºC, X series compounds should be selected for the most demanding service conditions.

Thanks to their unique curing chemistry, they can offer very broad chemical resistance in a wide variety of media, including acids, caustics, ketones, aldehydes, esters, ethers, methanol, solvents, sour gases, amines, hydrocarbons, steam, hot water and mixed process streams.

A black and a white compound are available, as shown in the chart on page 9. For best acid resistance select PFR 70-WX1.

FDA and USP Class VIPFR 70-WX1 is intended for repeated use in food processing equipment and to be in contact with food types I through VII Table 1 – Types of Raw and Processed Food. L SeriesL series PFR compound shows a very low glass transition temperature (Tg) of –30 °C, a unique offer for a FFKM compound.

Its chemical resistance, superior to A-series compounds, makes the L compounds an outstanding combination of high-end properties.

PFR 75-BL1 is suitable for most applications in temperature ranging from – 40 °C to 230 °C, offering outstanding resistance to aggressive media such as hot organic and inorganic acids, caustics, amines (especially hot amines, i.e. at temperature higher than + 70 °C), ketones, aldehydes, esters, ethers, alcohols, fuels, solvents, sour gases, hydrocarbons, steam, hot water, formate solutions and mixed process streams.

Processing GuideCompound Storage and Shelf LifeTecnoflon® PFR compounds can be stored up to 6 months in a cool and dry area. Refrigeration is recommended to extend shelf life.

PFR compounds can be readily processed by means of conventional elastomer processing methods such as compression, transfer and injection-molding. Alternatively they can be extruded into hoses or profiles and subsequently cured in an autoclave. Tecnoflon® PFR compounds behave similarly to Tecnoflon® peroxide-cured fluoroelastomer compounds: standard process equipment for FKMs is suitable for PFR compounds.

Pre-forming (by extrusion)When processing Tecnoflon® PFR compounds by means of compression molding into O-rings, pre-forming (i.e. the shaping of the uncured compound in the form of a cord) is recommended. This optimizes the manufacturing process as well as enhances the seal performance. Additionally accurate compound preforming reduces the amount of flash, resulting in less process waste and improved efficiency.

It is recommended that the preforming be carried out by means of conventional elastomer screw extruders with L/D ratio of approximately 15. Extrusion parameters must be fine-tuned according to compound properties and apparatus design; for lower viscosity compounds such as the A and L series, 50°C for the die and 30°C for the barrel are recommended. On the other hand, for higher viscosity compounds like the X series, higher temperatures (70°C for the die and 50°C for the barrel) are suggested. The operating conditions, when set properly, will result in a smooth and constant profile. Particular care must be taken to prevent excessive heat buildup in the compound, which will result in scorching.

MoldingVulcanization of the compounds is most commonly carried out in compression-molding presses. The process conditions depend on the compound, the press and the tool design as well as on the item geometry. However the A and L series compounds can be effectively molded at 160°C, while 170 °C is the optimal curing temperature for the X series compounds. Curing time depends mainly on item size and geometry: for instance the larger the cross-section, the longer the curing time.

Post CureThe post-cure step is needed for all FFKMs in order to complete the cure, eliminate impurities and strengthen filler-polymer interactions.

Post-cure parameters are related to oven type. Therefore optimal conditions must be tuned to the system in use. As starting point, the following is recommended:

• A and L series: 4 h at 230°C

• BX series: 8 hours rise from RT to 290°C followed by 16 hours at 290°C

• WX series: 8 hours rise from RT to 250°C followed by 16 hours at 250°C
