TECHNOLOGY WHITE PAPER
1. BACKGROUND OF THE PROJECT
When the tire lose the essential characteristics for a safe and efficient performance, it must be replaced, it becomes a waste called ELT's (End of Life Tire). In Italy, around 400,000 tons of tires are disposed of each year (2,600,000 tons / year in Europe); the ELTs can follow two different treatment paths with material or energy recovery. From the path of the recovery of the materials, after suitable processing, elastomeric rubber, harmonic steel and textile fiber are obtained.
1. BACKGROUND DEL PROGETTO

1. BACKGROUND OF THE PROJECT
The elastomeric rubber granules are reused as a secondary raw material in many applications: sports surfaces, modified asphalts, building, urban furniture, reuse in the mix, etc. The harmonic steel is required for second casting and used for the realization of springs, elastic clips, strings for musical instruments, etc. The textile fiber makes up about 10% by weight of the materials recovered from ELT. It does not have any use to date; it must be disposed of in landfills or incenerators. It represents for all ELT treatment plants a significant economic cost and for the community an enormous environmental impact. Only in Italy the ELT fibres represents about 40,000 tons / year of landfill material. Valorize this product makes it possible to tackle important environmental challenges: saving of raw materials energy saving for the production of textile fibers reduction of greenhouse gas emissions
1. BACKGROUND DEL PROGETTO

2. THE PROJECT
In previous research activities many paths were explored for a possible reuse of textile fiber (bituminous conglomerates, cement mixes, soundproofing panels, thermal insulation panels, compounds, etc.); very interesting data emerged on two fronts: Asphalt mixes with added textile fibre: The textile fibres properly dosed in street asphalt gives greater resistance to fatigue; that allows extending its average life; Compound mixes with added textile fibre: The textile fibre, added in appropriate proportions to other plastics, even recycled origin, and after appropriate treatment, can be extruded and can therefore be used for the production of compounds. The textile fibres, combined with other plastics (eg. Polypropylene and similar materials), increase the impact strength on the compound; this materials is suitable for the production of each type of crankcase, automotive components and similar products. The aim of the REIBRE project is to extend the research described and to bring to industrial application the recycling of textile fiber from ELT's.

3. PROJECT PHASES
The project consists of three macro phases:
1. Development and realization of an industrial plant (prototype) for the processing of textile fibre from ELT treatment for the production of second raw material The textile fibre cannot be used directly in the final
application; it cannot be processed and cannot be
dosed.
It was necessary mixes additives to work the textile
fibbre.
Finally, a prototype has been designed and developed
that works the fibre and makes it compatible with
subsequent processes.
The textile fiber pellets have a 1/3 compaction.
This allows to contain the volume of material to be
transported with an important reduction of
greenhouse gases and fuel.

3. PROJECT PHASES
2. Use of the treated textile fibre in the production of bituminous conglomerate for the construction of fibro reinforced road surfaces Mix designer with the added use of fiber pellets from
PFU were studied and tested in the laboratory. Then
tests were carried out on the A24 and A25 motorways
at different altimeters to evaluate behavior at
different climatic conditions.
3. FASI DEL PROGETTO
climatiche.

3. PROJECT PHASES
In the places where ELT fiber was added, we found
it:
- 30% increase in flexural strength
- a stiffness modulus of about 15% higher
- a notable increase in fatigue resistance which
leads to an estimated 50% increase in road life
Furthermore, the presence of fibers makes the
working phase easier. The presence of fibers acts as
an absorbent and prevents the binder (various
bitumens) from "draining".
In the market there are products that serve to fulfill
this problem; they are made of cellulose fibres.
The ELT fibres have a lower cost and better results
beyond the function referred to in point 1.

3. PROJECT PHASES
3. Use of the treated textile fibre in the production of plastic compounds for use in the production of objects made of molded plastic material. Various plastic compounds were tested in the
laboratory. Plastic compounds with the ELT textile
fibre was mixed with both virgin materials and waste
materials.
3. FASI DEL PROGETTO
The aim is to demonstrate how the addition of fibres from ELT increases some mechanical characteristics that make these materials usable and convenient from a technical, economic and environmental point of view

3. PROJECT PHASES
Some finished products have been made. On them many tests have been carried out to validate the plastic compound. In particular, a pallet (for the transport) was printed (extrusion) using a compound with fiber and recycled plastics. The results obtained are very interesting. Impact resistance (shock) is always higher when the PFU fiber is added to the plstic compound. The REFIBRE pallet behave even better than pallets made with only virgin material (no recycled plastic)

4. LCA ANALYSIS
The objective of the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) study was to evaluate the benefits of the REFIBRE Life project in terms of: recycling of waste, saving of natural resources, reduction of energy consumption and emissions (GHG). Three possible scenarios were compared: disposal of textile fiber in landfill energy recovery of textile fiber recycling of textile fiber in the production of plastic
compounds recycling of textile fiber in the production of
reinforced asphalts Per ogni scenario è stata calcolata la LCA.
5. ANALISI LCA
The results are very positive. They are shown in the following section (Impacts of the project).
