Background
WIND TURBINESstructures that harness the energy from
the wind by converting its kinetic energy into mechanical
and electrical energy.
Grouped into WIND FARMS, which are either onshore or
offshore.

Two types of wind turbines:
1) HORIZONTAL AXIS WIND TURBINE (HAWT)
2) VERTICAL AXIS WIND TURBINE (HAWT)

Applications
Bangui Wind Farmis a wind
farm in Bangui, Ilocos Norte, Philippines.
The wind farm uses 20 units of 70-metre
(230 ft) high VestasV82 1.65 MW wind
turbines, arranged on a single row
stretching along a nine-kilometershoreline off Bangui Bay, facing the South
China Sea.

Cost Benefit Analysis
The planning of a wind farm
Its never just one windmill.
Steps:
1. Set target powerrequirement.
2. Canvas Turbine Costs.
3. Identify a geographical area4. Negotiate Construction Bid.
5. Build.

Cost Benefit Analysis
So how much does it cost
exactly?
It depends.
Cost is typically
measured in
MEGAWATT.
-

18/28
Cost Benefit Analysis
For Example: Bangui Windmills
Therefore, the cost isroughly $2.27M per
megawatt.

Cost Benefit Analysis
Maintenance Cost
Less than investmentcost
Estimated to be 2-3%of total investment costannually

Cost Benefit Analysis
For Example: Bangui Windmills
(cont..)
Operated by Transco Laoag
Estimated 21 year life
Sells power to INEC for Php4.43 / kWh
under
Electricity Sales Agreement
This price already includes both
maintenance and investment cost
Consider this price versus Meralcos
Rate of roughly Php6.67/kWh

Cost Benefit Analysis
What this costs could mean to you:For example:
Use Macbook Pro 35Hours a week.
30watts x 35hrs/wk x52wks/yr
= 54,600 watts/hr or 54.6kWh
Cost: (Meralco)54.6 kWh x 6.67 = Php364.18
(Wind)54.6 kWh x 4.47 = Php244.06

Cost Benefit Analysis
Estimated savings of .07centavos for every kilowatt-
hour produced against fossilfuel power
Will help an estimatednumber of 70, 000
household Reduced CO2 emission by
56,788 of CO2 per year
Reduced risk of respiratory

Nation-Building
Implications
Seeing that wind farms could only be put up instrategic places in the country, these provinces
and other provinces surrounding it would have
more opportunities.
This will provide the local community will more
jobs and a means of livelihood.
Opening such wind farms to these provinces
will provide both white collar and blue collar
work opportunities.
The benefit in investing on wind energy for the
environment is quite obvious.
Having this kind of renewable energy would definitely be
advantageous for the environment. But when a country,
the Philippines in this case, shifts to this new kind of
renewable technology, how would it affect growth of the
country?
