Ideas and Resources for a Technology-based Unit
Marie Schussler
Technology Integration• Rationale: As technology progresses in this day and age, we
notice that the youth has become more dependent on technology and ways to make life easier. We see that mathematics is a subject that cannot quite be altered. As time progresses, the subject builds from the past using previous equations. Math is a subject that can grow by including technologies, but it is important to remember the basics in mathematics. Because technology and mathematics are both progressing and students are becoming more fixated on technology, it would be beneficial to incorporate technology into mathematics. That way, students will be more engaged and willing to learn if they use what they are used to. By using technology with the subject of polygons, students will be able to virtually interact and see visually what polygons are and how they are made up of.

Content From YouTube
• As mentioned before, because technology is so prevalent and students today are using technology, it would be beneficial for teachers to incorporate technology. With these next three slide, there will be three different forms of technology that mathematics, specifically polygons, will be used in to further engage students. With all of the videos, pictures, and other different forms of technology, students are more willing to want to learn because they can relate in a way with the technology provided to them while still using the former methods of teaching as well that are still effective.

Internet Content
Content From YouTube• This first video talks about
the classifications of different
polygons. This video is easy
to follow and provides a
number of facts for students
to understand while a
teacher writes on the screen.
• This second video provides
students with a number of
facts simply within about 6
minutes. It provides a
definition, drawings,
identifications, and
examples.

Internet Podcast• http://beowulfjr.podbean.com/2011/12/07/vide
o-podcast-on-polygons/
• https://fogard-edl325.wikispaces.com/Podcasting
1. The first podcast is simply found on Google in which we see someone explaining polygons and their characteristics. This can be useful in the classroom because having different perspectives other than your teacher can be very useful. Students can visually follow not just a voice, but see what another teacher is talking about.
2. The second podcast is useful website provided by Wikispacein which it explains how podcasts are used in the classroom and polygons are the example lesson used.
Internet Blog
• http://yollisclassblog.blogspot.com/2010/02/polygon-movie.html
• Blogs are really useful tools because it provides a space for others to share questions, comments or concerns about a specific topic. It also helps others further education through the opinions of others. Here we see an interesting blog made from a teacher that provides ideas for other teachers as well as lessons and feedback from students.
Internet Resources
• The Internet provides direct access to government agencies and private organizations that monitor hurricanes. The next two slides identify some of these organizations, as well as a description of who they are and how their websites might be used in support of teaching about hurricanes (below is a preview of the next two slides).
• The Internet provides students and others with the access to various organizations and agencies in which they are provided with valid resources to further their education. These next two slides provide information that mathematicians use to find articles related to the topic of your choice as well as an online database. They also provide fun games and puzzles for students to experiment and use hands-on activities.
Internet Resource #1
• http://www.maa.org/pubs/cmj.html
• This resource provides information and articles from scholars and many who have written journals about any various topic. In here are interesting journals about polygons and how they are created.
Internet Resource #2
• http://www.maa.org/pubs/cmj.html
• This is another internet resource that students can use in order to have fun quizzes that make you think with several different topics including polygons and shapes.
• Khan Academy is a nonprofit organization that provides resources for faculty and students. Their goal is to develop an education that anyone can get their hands on.

Teaching Material #1
•www.mathforum.org•This online site is very useful for teachers and the outside community to connect to math and math education and provides extra problems and games for students.
•http://www.regentsprep.org/Regents/math/geometry/GG3/indexGG3.htm•The is a useful website that teachers can use to prepare lessons for polygons as well as use activities, worksheets, and ideas.
Teaching Material #2
• http://www.scholastic.com/teachers/teaching-resources
•This is another useful website in which teachers can use this not only for math, but for many subjects. This website can be used for activities, strategies, ideas, student activities, and books.
Subject-Specific Resource
•These are just a few websites that teachers can provide for students in order to keep them engaged, especially for the subject of polygons.•http://www.math-play.com/Geometry-Math-Games.html•http://resources.woodlands-junior.kent.sch.uk/maths/shape.htm•http://www.fupa.com/games/1/polygon.html
Uses of the Internet
• http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polygon•Wikipedia, along with many online encyclopedias, provide information that is easily available to anyone with an internet access. Wikipedia is beneficial for education because it allows the public to view any subject with examples, sources, and definitions.
Web 2.0
•http://www.quizinator.com/• This website is very helpful to teachers and students. It allows them to create their own worksheets, games, quizzes, etc. •https://www.facebook.com/search/results.php?q=polygons%20shapes&type=web&form=FBKBFA&wssk=FR4AS3&wssp=8&wspq=polygons&wssrc=2&wssc=8-8&wsbp=4-5&fref=ts•Through a common social media source, we can access information about polygons.
