Shipment Execution Secure Carriers in an Automated Fashion via Electronic Collaborative Tools

The Insight TMS® Execution Module provides the ability to tender shipments, monitor carrier confirmations and manage all of the necessary documents required for shipments and loads.

BOL Creation — Quickly create, save and send Bills of Lading with built-in carrier selection capability.

An Industry Leader in Plastic Coatings Implements Process Improvements, Reduces Costs and Streamlines its Supply Chain with Insight TMS®The ChallengeAn industry-leading manufacturer of specialty plastics faced increasing pressure to streamline supply chain management. With a strong focus on customer satisfaction and a significant uptick in business, managing a smooth, rapid flow of products to the customer was challenging. Furthermore, the number of new, unfamiliar motor carriers providing service was multiplying at a time when it was essential the manufacturer access in real time the best mode of transportation and the best suited carriers for customer deliveries.

The manufacturer’s internal processes included spreadsheets for tracking shipments and cost; a manual method for auditing bills and gathering accrual information; sales operations without visibility to track orders; and a lack of accountability for sales people giving away “free freight.” Production, accounting, sales and logistics functions needed to be aligned to continue to meet the needs of a growing customer base in a timely and economical manner. That challenge would require the systematic intelligence provided by Insight TMS®.

Strategy This forward-thinking manufacturer and Transportation Insight became strategic partners to apply LEAN principles across the extended supply chain. The action plan included streamlining processes, cutting cost, improving internal and external communications, and capitalizing on business intelligence.

As a first step in reducing costs, Transportation Insight helped the client achieve industry-leading carrier pricing by performing a freight analysis of all transportation modes to define clearly the current freight profile. Transportation Insight led an industry-wide carrier bid process, leveraging the client’s freight together with Transportation Insight’s hundreds of millions in freight under management to achieve the lowest possible carrier pricing. Transportation Insight also began to audit the client’s freight invoices each week. Every carrier invoice was re-rated relative to the published carrier pricing to identify and eliminate carrier overcharges.

Transportation Insight customized and delivered the web-based Insight TMS® software applications to give the client unprecedented visibility and control over their transportation processes. The Insight TMS® rate shop application automated carrier routing decisions across the entire enterprise, making it fast and easy for personnel at all locations to choose the optimal carrier and mode of transportation for any given customer order. Integration of payment information with the shipment data allowed for an automated accrual

that detailed amounts for each general ledger code each month. In addition, a strategy was developed to allocate costs by sales territory to specific general ledger codes. This enabled the manufacturer to pinpoint territories giving away “free freight” and allowed them to address opportunities.

As the partnership advanced, the manufacturer and Transportation Insight put technology further to work by including data integration with Insight TMS®. With that enhancement, information moved seamlessly back and forth across the client’s corporate ERP platform and Transportation Insight’s web based state-of-the-art Transportation Management System.

Insight TMS® applications helped maximize managerial control over the transportation network, drive compliance and deliver reliable enterprise-wide business insight to support sound decision making. Business insight gleaned from the technology and data also enabled the manufacturer to provide metrics packages to their customers about the cost impact of shifts in the logistics profile, such as average length of haul, shipment size and fuel surcharges.

Value Summary ResultsBy forming a strategic partnership with Transportation Insight, the specialty plastics manufacturer was able to streamline its logistics operations and experience a double digit reduction in total cost (Transportation Insight clients typically realize a net average of 15 to 25% reduction in overall transportation spend, depending on modes). By helping this client achieve supply chain excellence, the manufacturer also created and currently sustains a significant competitive advantage in the marketplace.
