Conference Strands

Innovation Sessions in this strand will showcase innovations in technology and hands-on learning opportunities using Web 2.0 tools, mobile devices, and open source products for education.

Leadership Sessions in this strand are designed for educational leaders to explore the systematic integration of technology in schools and how to use technology to monitor learning progress.

Teaching and Learning Sessions in this strand will focus on using technology tools for elementary and secondary education to facilitate critical thinking and engaging instruction.

Leveraging Technology Tools Sessions in this strand are designed to expand the capacity of schools by leveraging greater access to technology and by increasing the integration of technology tools.

Promoting College and Career Readiness Sessions in this strand focus on promoting college and career readiness to educators, students, and parents.

Technology Support and Management Sessions in this strand will address systems for data management, security and green technologies.

This event is designed to provide educators and schools with greater access to state-of-the-art tools, resources, and innovative ideas to integrate technology effectively.

Conference Information

Sessions (included with your registration fee) will be offered on Tuesday, May 14 through Thursday, May 16. The exhibit hall will not be open on Tuesday, May 14. All participants and exhibitors will be required to wear their name badge at all times to enter the session rooms and/or the exhibit hall.

Participant Sign-in Participants are required to sign-in at the APPROVED REGISTRATIONS booth in the morning AND after lunch daily.

Vendor Exhibits Attendees of the Technology Conference 2013 will have the opportunity to view demonstrations of the latest innovations in computer hardware, software, and multimedia solutions for education on display in the exhibit hall. All participants and exhibitors must wear their name badge to enter the exhibit hall.

Exhibit Hours: Wednesday, May 15, 2013 — 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM Thursday, May 16, 2013 — 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM

Room Capacity All rooms are set to the maximum attendance allowed by the fire marshal. Once sessions are at capacity, “Session Closed” signs will be posted on the door.

Wireless Access Network Name: Region 1 Free WiFi All conference participants are being provided with wireless internet access by Frontera Consulting at Booth # 211. There is no password to connect to this network. However, the network will be monitored and there will be no support for streaming video such as NetFlix, HBO GO or torrent services.

Door Prizes Check for list of winners at the Region One ESC Door Prize booth located in the exhibit hall. Door prizes will be awarded throughout the conference. On May 16, 2013, all unclaimed door prizes will be awarded at 3:15 PM. MUST BE PRESENT TO WIN!!

Food and Refreshments Coffee will be available for all participants at 8:00 AM every morning at the concession stand in the South Padre Island Convention Centre. Snacks and drinks will be sold throughout the day Tuesday through Thursday. Outside food and refreshments are not allowed in the convention centre.

Schlitterbahn Beach Waterpark Weekend Special Rate Schlitterbahn Beach Waterpark is offering a special rate of $24.99 (plus tax) to conference participants who wish to go to the waterpark on May 17-19, 2013. You must present your conference name badge to receive this special rate. The rate is applicable for conference participants and up to five family members as well.

CPE Credit Attendees at Technology Conference 2013 can receive CPE (Continuing Professional Education) credit for every session attended. It is the attendee’s responsibility to keep track of the sessions attended and CPE credit. A form has been provided on page 26 of this program for your convenience.

REMINDERS Don’t forget to bring and wear your name badge each day. Replacement name badges for lost/misplaced name badges are $5.00. Children under age 18 are not allowed into the Technology Conference sessions or exhibit hall.

Participants will also learn to edit the home page, create file folders with homework assignments, and post links for the students. Still, there is a big discrepancy between the level of technology used and expected of educators and the actual use and integration in the classroom. In this session, we will break down the barriers that hinder the effective use of technology and participants will walk away with their own digital classroom. Participants will create a Weebly site and integrate cloud materials from Schoology & Google Docs.

11 Redefining Classroom Participation with Socrative The Socrative Smart Student Response System is a free app that encourages student participation, differentiated instruction, and reduces the amount of time teachers spend grading and in the copy room. Participants will activate a Socrative Account and learn to input multiple choice, true/false, and short answer questions, or generate quizzes, exit tickets, and space races in order to assess their students and monitor their progress and performance on classroom and homework assignments.

15 Maintain Your BYOD using PacketFence Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) is huge and coming in strong at all district levels, universities and community colleges. Although, due to budget cuts some do not have enough funds to purchase a $30k-$60k BYOD management solution. PacketFence is an easy open source management for BYOD that is easy to manage and deploy in an existing network.

42 Schoology: LMS for the 21st Century Learner Participants will be introduced to a newly designed Learning Management System (LMS) that caters to the needs of grades 6-12 learners and educators. We will cover setup, creating courses, joining groups, managing personal and public resources, calendars, gradebook, and the mobile accompanying application.

Pinterest creates this, and much more. The Region One ESC GEAR UP Pinterest site is composed of resources to assist students in planning, applying, and paying for college. It empowers parents in their endeavors to support their children through the college-going process. It supports educators by providing resources in education, technology, and counseling.
