4. Sentence Revision

Total Question Answer

1

An encyclopedia is an ideal place to research an unfamiliar topic—in particular, a subject-specific encyclopedia with articles written by experts.

Converting the second independent clause to a phrase, deleting "in a field" and modifying "unfamiliar" reduce the word count. Also, "in a field" is redundant, while “lost” is a typing mistake and “really handy” should be revised as it is too colloquial.

2

Solicited proposals are requested by the customer—for example, by means of an RFP. Unsolicited proposals have not been requested—they come in the mail unexpectedly.

The first draft is very wordy, "those that have been" and "in some way or other", while "out of the blue" simply repeats "unexpected".

3

However, if your approach will produce better results, then a discussion of opportunities, benefits, and feasibility may indeed be in order even in a solicited proposal.

You can shorten "your way of doing the project" with “your approach”

4

Recent studies of full-time software engineers states they program for only one-fifth of their work time.

You can re-write “time that they spend on the job” to “work time”. One fifth needs a hyphen e.g. one-fifth. Some style guide will recommend that you write one-fifth as twenty percent.

5

The business writing skills presented here are useful in the documents you prepare for other courses.

In the draft the section “such as those presented here”

should be a sub-clause. The section “the various types of documents you prepare for your other courses” can be reduced to “the documents you prepare
