1. INTRODUCTION
1.1 Purpose/Scope
This proficiency test serves as an assessment of the capability of the participating laboratories
to properly measure physical parameters on cigarettes and filters. Although it is not required
for a proficiency test to define the measurement method, in practice all laboratories closely
followed CORESTA Recommended Methods or the respective ISO standards.
The test results allow each laboratory to evaluate its performance in comparison to other
laboratories and to derive actions for improvement. All results are presented in anonymised
form.
1.2 Study Summary
The test protocol used for this study is given in Appendix A “2015 PTM Proficiency Test –
Study Protocol” of this report, covering:

The cigarette samples have been provided by the manufacturer of the respective brand. Filter
samples have been provided by Solvay Acetow GmbH.
For each of the ten products (F1-F5 and C1-C5) three sets of samples randomly taken from a
larger sample batch have been prepared and provided to the participants.

Evaluation 1:
For each product C1-C5 and F1-F5 three sample sets (representing as well the three days of
analysis) have been analysed for parameters as given above. Per sample 10 cigarettes or filter
rods have been measured.
Evaluation 2:
In order to potentially exclude the sample-to-sample variation, the laboratory variation was
evaluated when measuring exactly the same sample repeatedly. Therefore sample 1 of filters
F1-F5 was measured on day 1 and then re-measured on day 2 and day 3 of the study.
Remark: The measurements performed for evaluation 2 are supposed not to have a noticeable
impact on the test sample, which is valid for filter rods only.

A total of 21 laboratories provided results for this study.

Information relevant to the interpretation of the results
Participants were asked to provide relevant data regarding instruments used, calibration of
instruments and environmental conditions in the instrument configuration sheet (for details
see Appendix A “2015 PTM Proficiency Test – Study Protocol”).
Participants followed the respective CORESTA Recommended Methods (CRM N° 6) or ISO
standards (ISO 6565, ISO 9512) to perform the measurements in the frame of this study as
given in section 5 “References” of this report.
A more detailed statistical data analysis is available for the participating laboratories on
request to the Physical Test Methods Sub Group.
2. RAW DATA
Results for cigarette samples were submitted by 20 participants. Results for filter samples
were submitted by 20 participants. One laboratory provided only cigarette data and one lab
provided only filter data. Each participant was assigned a unique code.
Once a data set was received from a laboratory, the data were inspected for any obvious
inconsistencies by the PTM proficiency test coordination group. Any inconsistencies were
reported back to the laboratory for comment or correction. In general typing errors were
corrected. The consolidated data as provided for statistical analysis are given in Appendix B
“2015 Proficiency Test – Raw Data – Laboratories encoded”.

3. STATISTICAL EVALUATION
3.1 Outlier Analysis and Removal
For this report the z-scores have been calculated as a basis to evaluate the laboratory
performance. It has to be noted that even though values from a laboratory have been excluded
by the use of Cochran and Grubbs outlier treatment, for the calculation of the global mean and
standard deviations, its performance was nevertheless evaluated. Thus the only use of outlier
detection was relative to the establishment of the assigned means and standard deviations.
Cochran’s test was applied first to eliminate laboratories with unusually high standard
deviations and then Grubbs’s test was used to detect whether the one or two highest and
lowest values in the data set qualify as outliers. If yes, the outliers were removed. Each outlier
test was applied once and after the first removal of outliers no further outliers were detected.
For the calculation of these statistics a global mean value and a global standard deviation for
each of the samples C1-C5 and F1-F5 is required. ISO 13528:2015 indicates to a substantial
part methods to obtain such a robust estimate of global mean values and standard deviations.
The number of data sets and data sets excluded from the global mean calculations are given in
Appendix C “2015 PTM Proficiency Test - Summary of data sets and outliers”.

3.4 Laboratory Proficiency – z-scores
To enable the calculation of z-scores the robust global mean and robust between labs standard
deviations have been calculated, using ISO Algorithm A.

4. INTERPRETATION OF SCORES/CONCLUSIONS
4.1 Interpretation and conclusions regarding z-scores – laboratory
proficiency
As described in ISO 13528, in normal circumstances, over time, about 95% of z-scores will
lie in the range -2 ≤ z ≤ 2.

Occasional scores in the range 2 <|z| <3 are to be expected, at a rate of 1 in 20. Whether or not
such scores are of importance can only be decided by considering them in the context of the
other scores obtained by that laboratory. Scores where |z| >3 are to be expected at a rate of
about 1 in 300. Given this rarity, such z-scores strongly indicate that the result is not fit-for-
purpose and almost certainly requires investigation.

4.2 Interpretation and conclusions regarding z-scores – laboratory
proficiency from evaluation 2 of filter products
The mean values and standard deviation obtained for
filter evaluation (1) F1-F5 with 3 samples (sample 1 day 1, sample 2 day 2, sample 3 day
3)
filter evaluation (2) F1-F5 with sample one re-measured on day 2 and day 3 are
comparable.
Laboratories showing substantial deviations from global mean values, that is, having z-scores
greater than 3 are the same in both evaluations.
