Thermo Scientific Series 8500 FDMS Chiller Cleaning Procedure

_____________________________________________________________________________ Bulletin # 8500C - 11132010 Rev 11/2010 The following procedure will assist in proper Series 8500 FDMS Chiller cleaning.

Equipment needed:

1. Chiller cleanout kit # 59-011572

Prepare the unit:

1. Remove the 47mm filter cartridge and filter by turning cartridge holder counter clockwise.

2. Wipe any visible residue off both the cartridge holder (chiller cap), and inside of the chiller compartment with lint free cloth.

3. Replace the chiller cap (without the 47mm filter holder) and close turning clockwise.

4. Remove the following connections:

4.1. Remove the large panel from the 8500 to access the air lines. 4.2. The green line going to the top dryer connection is your vacuum supply, remove it from the

fitting by pushing against the fitting ring while pulling on the tube. 4.3. Remove connection to the “Chiller Out” and connect to “Orifice Fitting”. (See step 5.2) 4.4. Remove connection to the “Chiller In” and connect “Adapter Fitting”. (See step 5.3)

5. Connecting the Chiller cleanout kit fittings: 5.1. The two fittings in the chiller cleanout kit (# 59-011572) allow for

controlled flow through the dryer during the heating process. 5.2. Insert the orifice fitting in the lower port. (“Chiller Out”) 5.3. Insert the Adapter fitting in the upper chiller port. (“Chiller In”) 5.4. Insert the vacuum line into the adapter fitting.

6. Start the Configuration utility:

6.1. Connect a computer to the 8500 via the RS232 connection and start the ‘8500 Configuration Utility’ program.

6.2. Click on the button labeled ‘Advanced’ at the top.

6.3. In the ‘Clean Mode’ box next to ‘Start’, select the number of minutes (between 1 and 10) to remain at 50C for cleaning. Five minutes is typical.

Cleaning the unit:

1. Start the cleaning cycle:

1.1. Press the start button.

1.2. Check the Status bar at the bottom of the window. It should read as below “In cleaning mode. Please wait….”

1.3. If you need to end the cycle for any reason, press ‘Stop’.

1.4. After stopping the cycle the status should read ‘Cleaning canceled. Press START to go back.

1.5. After starting, the Cooler temperature will increase until it reaches 50oC.

1.6. Once at temperature, the Status mode will change to a countdown, indicating the time remaining at temperature.

1.7. After the time has expired, the Status will read ‘Cleaning is done’.

1.8. At this point the unit will revert to a chiller. Wait until the cooler temperature returns to set point (either 4oC or 10oC) before reconnecting the plumbing.

Reconnect and close unit: 1. Ensure the cooler temperature returned to normal set point, and then reconnect the plumbing. 2. Remove the two “Chiller cleanout kit fittings. 3. Replace the green vacuum line to the dryer. 4. The bottom fitting on the chiller (“chiller out”) connects to the bottom fitting on the valve assy. 5. The top fitting on the chiller (“chiller in”) connects to the top fitting on the valve assy. 6. Replace the 8500 panel with lint free cloth. 7. Wipe any visible residue off both the cartridge holder (chiller cap), and inside of the chiller

compartment. 8. Replace the 47mm filter holder, cleaned and with a new filter.

Series 8500 FDMS Chiller cleaning complete.
