4L60E/4L65ENew Parts UpdatesNew Oil PumpIn an attempt to increase the pump output for the high RPM operation, a major change was imple-mented for the 4L60/65E pumps at SOP 2004. The pump body is redesigned containing an offset slide and a smaller rotor. The updated parts can be ID by 2 dimples (one at each end of the converter drive lug locations) of the rotor and at the 1 dimple (located at the priming spring support) of the slide. The updated slide and rotor are not designed for back service although a complete pump body and cover can retro fit back to 1997 units as an assembly.

Major Change to the Pump, Case, and Outer SealJanuary 2004, the pump outer seal groove has been moved in the pump cover on the interim design (It was moved 1.6mm). As the design change is fully implemented, the seal groove will be eliminated. The seal will now be sealed with the bell housing and will just ride on the outside of the pump body. Very important to have proper bell housing torque to crush this new design seal. The updated seal part number is: 24226315.

RE5R05ASolenoid FunctionThere are a total of seven solenoids in all located on the valve body. Infiniti models from 2002 to mid 2004 the solenoids were controlled by the TCM located in the right front kick panel. All 2004 and later Infiniti and Nissan models the TCM is located on the valve body. The RE5R05A was not used in Nissan until mid 2004.

All of the solenoids except the Low Coast Brake solenoid have 3.3 ohms resistance. The Low Coast Brake solenoid has 23 ohms resistance. The TCM controls all the solenoids using a duty cycle signal except the Low/Coast Brake solenoid which is an On/Off type. When checking solenoid operation an amp meter can be used on early 2002 to mid 2004 models. On mid 2004 and later models a capable scan tool or interface adapter to monitor solenoid operation will be needed.

When monitoring through scan tool data solenoid operation will read in amps with the exception of the Low/Coast solenoid which will read On/Off. All of the solenoids operate between 0.0 to 0.8 amps. The solenoid application chart is shown in figure 1.

68RFEMotor Oil Leak After Engine to Trans Adapter ReplacementBelow is a picture of where the square cut rubber ring (location of the seal is indicated by the red ink pen - OEM Part # 5086757AA cost of $2.05) goes to prevent a motor oil leak if you replace the engine to transmission adapter on a 6.7L Cummins diesel 2007 & up models. This seal does not come includ-ed when you buy the new adapter from the dealer because of damage done from a cracked flexplate.

68RFENo Forward Movement, Reverse OkA no forward movement condition can be caused by the underdrive molded piston seal being ripped.You might even see the input drum full of burnt clutchs from the underdrive drum assembly. The underdrive piston assembly fits into the drum very tightly. There are cases of this piston being torn in brand new vehicles.

Check the clutch retainer drum for wear or internal issues that can cause the piston to fail. To correct this concern you need to replace the piston and the drum, to help you with the installation try follow-ing these simple steps.

Technical Bulle n #1439Make two marks on the old drum, the marks shown are approximate. Use a micrometer and depth gauge to accurately measure your cu ng area. Cut the drum where the marks are located. This will leave you with the bo om half of the drum only.

Apply a liberal amount of assembly lube to the piston lip. Assemble the piston inside the ring. Make sure the lip of the piston is compressed to the correct diameter by the drum ring.

Freeze the piston and drum ring assembly over night. For best results a minimum of eight hours of freeze me. When you remove the assembly from the freezer, make sure you have the new drum real close and the installa on should be done as soon as possible.

5R55SShudder on Acceleration From a StopWhile working on a 2005-2009 Ford Mustang equipped with a 4.0L or 4.6L engine and a 5R55S trans-mission, you may experience a shudder sensation on acceleration from a stop. It has been determined that this may be caused by the incorrect transmission mount being installed. The 4.0L and 4.6L en-gines use a different transmission mount. The 4.0L mount (part# 8R3Z-6068-D) can be identified by a “blue paint dot” on the mount. The 4.6L mount (part# 8R3Z-6068-E) can be identified by a “white or yellow paint dot” on the mount.
