The background of knowledge-sharing – What is innovation?

• Innovation: successful implementation of a new idea,• New idea: product, practice, service, production process or

organizing method, financing, market access, etc. • Innovation: technological, non technological, or social, and

could be based on new or traditional practices.• Interactive „system”-innovation is preferred, in which building

blocks are expected to come from science, but also from practice.

The background of knowledge-sharing – The European context of innovation

• Europe 2020 Strategy: R & D and innovation to meet new challenges,

• European Innovation Partnerships (EIP): a new tool to foster knowledge transfer,

• "Budget for Europe 2020„: 4.5 billion Euros for research and innovation in the field of food security, bio-economy and sustainable agriculture,

• New Common Agricultural Policy (CAP): key role of innovation in sustainable agriculture and rural development.

EU rural development priorities 1) fostering knowledge transfer and innovation in agriculture, forestry, and

rural areas – „Cross-cutting”(2) enhancing competitiveness and farm viability (3) promoting food and non-food chain organisation and risk management(4) restoring, preserving and enhancing ecosystems related to agriculture

and forestry(5) promoting resource efficiency and supporting the shift towards a low

How to enhance innovation in agriculture and rural development?

• Setting up ”operational groups” to bring together innovation actors (farmers, researchers, advisors, environmental groups, consumer interests groups or other NGOs) to advance innovation in the agricultural sector.

• Combining the setting up of operational groups with project funding (investments, knowledge transfer, advisory services).

• Establishing ”innovation brokers”• Functioning of EIP network

•Collecting information (research and innovation projects etc.),

• effective flow of information (website, helpdesk function),

• exchange on overall innovation topics (seminars, workshops),

• sharing knowledge on concrete practical work (focus groups),

• systematic feedback about practice needs.

Innovation in Agriculture and Rural Development - Hungary’s main tasks in the near future

• enhance the R & D activities in agriculture,• improve international coordination• increase companies’ capacities to operate own unit for

R&D,• establish a system operated by the state and make

results available for enterprises, • successful operation of knowledge transfer (research

results to be disseminated for farmers), • closer connection and interaction is needed between

research and practice.
