September 2016 Tech TalkSchool Safety Recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) By: Hilda Fields, MEd, CPST-1

This time of year is very exciting for most parents and children as students are returning to the normalcy of a school routine and activities. While caregivers are preparing for and get-ting children use to a new school year, it is important to keep in mind some critical safety tips. Please remind caregivers of these safety tips during seat checks and check events:

Car Safety: • Stress the importance of children

riding in a car seat with a harness or booster seat as long as possible.

• When transporting children, keep

all children under 13 years old in the rear seat. If you have to transport more children than can

fit in the rear seat (when carpooling, for example), move the front seat as far back as possible and have the child ride in a booster seat to ensure proper fit of the vehicle seat belt.

Bus Safety: • If the school bus has lap and shoul-

der seat belts, make sure children use one at all times.

• Encourage children to look carefully

for oncoming traffic before crossing the street, just in case traffic does not stop as required.

More school safety tips can be found at the American Academy of Pediatrics' website at www.aap.org.

4momsTM Self-Installing Car Seat By: Anthony Dilligard, MBA, CPST

On June 14, 2016, 4momsTM launched their new self-installing car seat. The child restraint installs itself correctly each time by automatically leveling and tensioning. It then verifies the installation be-fore every ride and continually monitors its status during use. The 4momsTM self-installing car seat requires the download of the 4momsTM app to a smartphone. Once downloaded, the app offers a number of unique features, including: • Advanced leveling – Caregivers use their

smartphone to ensure the car seat base is in-stalled at the correct level, even if the car is parked on an incline.

• VIN capture – The caregiver can take a photo of the vehicle’s VIN number to better under-stand where to install the car seat. The app

recommends a specific seat position for installa-tion based on the vehicle make and model.

• Carrier in vehicle alert – A feature designed to remind parents that the carrier is in the vehicle, thereby reducing the risk of leaving a child be-hind.

The 4momsTM self-installing car seat is intended for use with infants who are 4 to 30 pounds and up to 32 inches tall. The 4momsTM self-installing car seat is scheduled for release in September of 2016.

The Diono Radian RXT Converti-ble + Booster Seat TM is an all-in-one car seat. This car seat is easy to transport through four different methods. These methods include: a red carry strap, the plastic side, a shoulder strap and backpack straps.

The Diono RXT Convertible + Booster SeatTM is able to grow with the child because of the mul-tiple buckle, shoulder and head-rest positions. The seat also fea-tures a v-shaped tether to help re-duce the movement of the CR in the vehicle. The caregiver can tether the car seat when it is rear-facing. The seat also features a Safe Stop Use harness for children who are less than 40 pounds in the forward-facing position to help absorb the energy and impact of the vehicle. This CR is approved for use in aircraft. The Diono Radian RXT Converti-ble + Booster SeatTM accommo-dates children in a rear-facing har-ness between 5 to 40 pounds with a maximum height of 44 inches. This CR accommodates children

between 20 to 80 pounds in a for-ward-facing harness with a maxi-mum height of 57 inches tall. It can be utilized as a booster seat between 30 to 120 pounds with a maximum height of 57 inches.

Chicco recently released the Kidfit Air 2 in 1 Belt Positioning Booster (BPB)TM. The Chicco Kidfit booster seat features Super CinchTM LATCH that al-lows the booster to securely fit the vehicle seat. The use of LATCH is optional with the installation of the Kidfit Air 2 in 1 BPBTM. It also includes a zip-on leg rest and an Ergo Boost Plus contoured seat that pro-vides additional comfort for the child. This seat in-cludes 3D AirMesh technical performance fabric with airflow channels for improved ventilation. The seat cover and arm rest covers are machine washable.

From June to August of 2011, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) conducted the National Child Restraint Use Special Study (NCRUSS). NHTSA observed the use of car seats and booster seats by child passengers from birth to age eight in 4,167 vehicles across the United States. NHTSA reviewed many aspects of child passenger safety including misuse rates of car seats and booster seats.

The Chicco Kidfit Zip Air 2 in 1 BPBTM, when used as a high back booster, accommodates chil-dren 30 to 100 pounds and 38 to 57 inches tall. The Chicco Kidfit Air 2 in 1 BPBTM, when used as a backless booster, accommodates children 40 to 110 pounds and 38 to 57 inches tall.

Type of Child Restraint Misuse Percentage Rate

Total 46%

Rear-facing infant car seat 49%

Rear-facing convertible 44%

Forward-facing car seat 61%

Highback booster 16%

Backless booster 24%

The types of “misuse” in this study included incor-rect installation of the car seat/booster in the vehicle and incorrect restraining of a child in a car seat/booster seat. It is important to note that not every variation from a perfect installation was considered “misuse” for this study. As CPS technicians we can use this study to help explain what is occurring in the field and at our car seat checks.
